This is a great Friday surprise, since I didn’t think it was coming until tomorrow!! Sweet!

Since you mentioned not being aware of any Bond actors between Roger Moore and and Sean Connery, there is one. The next movie after this is a Connery (You Only Live Twice), THEN there is one with George Lazenby called On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It’s widely considered to be one of the best Bond movies, and I wholeheartedly agree. Lazenby only did one. Then Connery comes back for another (Diamonds are Forever) before Roger Moore comes into the picture.

Bond with a Mink Glove ..... should have been illegal back in the 60's

I was 11 years old and allowed to go during the day to see this by myself in Downtown San Diego. Back when we had huge high ceilings and balconies back then. What an incredible experience for a young boy.

Everyone’s a Domino fan, but I’m a Paula guy. The actress Martine Beswick is Jamaican and British, and a Hammer Horror/Hammer Films girl of which I’m a massive fan. But a lot of people don’t know that Martine isn’t JUST Paula in Thunderball, but she’s ALSO one of the two Gypsy girls who fought in From Russia With Love!!! She’s alive and well and does the convention circuits. Paula, allllll the way. I’d never have left the boat 🤪

I’m so annoying today with this one, sorry. You brought up Domino’s bikini and wondered if it was the model for Halle Berrys in Die Another Day, and the answer is no. It’s an homage to Ursula Andreas’s bikini as she comes out of the ocean in Dr No.

They announced today that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next Bond movie. He directed both Dune movies, Blande Runner 2049 and Arrival among others. That makes me excited for the next film.

Thunderball won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and it is easy to see why. A few years back I had the opportunity to see this film on the big screen at my local Alamo theater and it was quite the experience. The underwater battle sequence really is a remarkable achievement. This film had a budget of $ 9 Million and made $ 141 Million at the box office (!) I would rank this second only to Goldfinger among my favorite films in the Bond catalog, with the beautiful Domino ranking first among the Bond girls! Great reaction Ames, enjoyed it!

It's been so much fun to see how much you have enjoyed these early Bond films Ames. What I really appreciated about Bond films is that they always showed something new to the audience. It might be new stunnig locations, never before seen stunts, new technology like the Bell Rocket Belt and so on. The Craig era films never did that much for me apart from Casino Royale which was fantastic. Bell Rocket Belt was demonstrated for the US army in 1962 so it was really new at the time. The project was eventually cancelled. I believe it was the US Navy who asked about the underwater breathing device. They asked how long could you breath with it underwater and the special effects guys said as long as you can hold your breath. Bond wears a Rolex Submariner in this film, which is of course perhaps the most famous diving watch. Bond has a long connection with Rolex, Seiko and Omega. The underwater vehicles were designed by the production designer Ken Adam. He was amazed when he was told that the desings could actually be made to working vehicles. Just stunning women in this one with Claudine Auger, Luciana Paluzzi, Martine Beswick and Molly Peters. What I love about the Bond films is that James doesn't usually bother with aliases. He knows the villains and the villains know him. Like in this one they didn't mind his presence as long as he didn't discover that the bombs were there. The scenes with Bond and the villain trading quippy lines together are always great. I really love Adolfo Celi as Largo. Celi was dubbed by Robert Rietty because of his heavy accent. I think just like with Fröbe on the previous one the voice really fits the character. Celi was very good friends with Kabir Bedi (Bedi had a succesful career in Italy and was well known in Italy and the rest of Europe for his role as Sandokan) who you will meet in Octopussy. Some people think that Tunderball is too long and especially the underwater sequences. For me they are really amazing and I haven't really seen underwater shots in this scale in other movies. Bond movies would have won many Oscars for stunts if they had given them back in the day. As usual really love the sets by Ken Adam and the fantastic score by John Barry who brings his 007 theme back from From Russia with Love. The name of the tune is 007 in the soundtracks and Barry used it in a few movies. Always happy when Q travels to the locations to give Bond some help. In this one you actually see a new side to the Bond and M relationship. M is usually really tough on Bond, but here you can see how much he actually believes in Bond. Like when the Home Secretary dismisses Bond M says that if James saw something he really did. M might believe in tough love, but he trusts his agents. I really love Luciana Paluzzi in this film. Fiona Volpe might be my favorite femme fatale in the series. She is just terrific throughout. This movie is also one that has maintained the falsehood that nuclear weapons have to be handled like eggs or else the result is a nuclear explosion. That is of course not the case and nuclear bombs have been in plane crashes without the nuclear rection happening. One of the most famous movies that gets this wrong is the K-19 Widowmaker. I love the movie though. Next film in the franchise has some really good stuff, but I don't want to spoil anything so I'll keep it top secret till then. As always Bond will return in...

I am so glad you enjoyed this film my young sister, I loved it and Thunderball remains the most financially successful film of the series in North America when adjusted for ticket price inflation and overall adjusting its earnings to 2011 prices, it has made around $1 billion worldwide, making it the second-most financially successful Bond film ever after Skyfall. I saw it when I was around 10 and OMG it was the most epic and incredible spectacle I had ever seen, the underwater battle amazing and it actually won the academy Award for Best Visual Effects, all his gadgets, the jet pack which was a first in the movies, there was nothing like it back then. I think it is my fav Bond movie with Goldfinger a close 2nd. :) This movie and Goldfinger was responsible for igniting the Secret Agent Craze of the mid 60's. This hit song came out in 66 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iaR3WO71j4 ; #3 on the Billboard Hot 10 All kids wanted to be secret agents, including me, LMAO :) and #4 on the Canadian RPM chart.
