***Light Spoilers Below***

West Side Story (1961) sits at 51 on the AFI list. A powerful film with a poignant ending that will for sure linger in my mind. This vibrant film has many brilliant shots, complemented by an amazing score, lively dancing, and engaging camera movement. I loved the sets and how they brought this film to the screen.

The message of the film hits home; the final scene is heart-wrenching, leaving you gutted and reflecting on life and love. Along with the senselessness of division. It's an interesting play on a retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

I see the AFI choosing this film because of its emotional depth and cultural impact, then and now, and I believe it to be a timeless classic. The technical brilliance of this film is truly impressive, and the themes it tackles are thought-provoking.

Not sure how many of you will watch this one, but I do recommend it if you want to check off all the movies on this list, like me. I left some space for the music to breathe and really hit me. Which it did. I loved seeing these beautiful actors work. Especially seeing Puerto Rican actors soar!

Let me know your thoughts below!

The one and only 'West Side Story'...Sorry about that Mr. Spielberg.... Other top 100's like 'Sunset Boulevard' 1950 'On the Waterfront' 1954 (Marlen Brando) 'The Grapes of Wrath' 1940 (Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford) 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' 1967⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I like to think of this as Romeo and Juliet, but without the happy ending. Directed by the great Robert Wise. It's worth checking out any of his other movies "The Sand Pebbles" (1966), "The Haunting" (1963), "The Sound of Music" (1965), "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), etc. Not to forget "Citizen Kane" (1941), on which he was an editor.

Well, it was nice while it lasted. I have owned this for years, so I didn't watch it on Amazon Prime and my copy does not have an intermission. I lost the sync. I spent a while trying to match what I saw with the blurred image, but I just couldn't make it work. Ah, well. It was a terrific reaction while it lasted.

Just got home! Watching now! Haven't watched this in ages, looking forward to seeing how it holds up! Love Rita Moreno in this. Plus you get to see little Natalie Wood from "Miracle On 34th Street" all grown up! Don't love this one as much as "Singin' In The Rain", but as musicals go, it's one of the better ones, in my opinion. Let's see what YOUR opinion is! Starting now!

I was never a huge musical movie guy but this is one of the films that's an exception (Washington Heights is another I really recommend) Spielberg redid this movie and as you would expect he knocked it out of the park but I still prefer the original for no other reason that watching Rita Moreno whose a national treasure and won the Oscar for her role in this..

Ames, it saddens me to see in your notes that you're afraid not many people will watch this reaction. If they don't, they're missing out on so much! You're 100% right that this incredible film is timeless, and every bit as relevant today as it was in 1961.

One of the greatest Musicals of all time. I never tire of this Musical. Great reaction. I have met two of the actors in real. Had them sign my laserdisc of this movie. Russ Tamblyn, who played Riff, I met once. George Chakiris who played Bernardo, I have met 3 times. Still hope to meet Richard Beymer (Tony) and Rita Moreno (Anita) hope so.

There are a LOT of movies out there....covering all sorts of themes and genres. From silliness to the depths of human nature to the mountaintops of fantasy and invention to just plain fun. Having considered the many, many hundreds of movies I have seen in my [long] lifetime--this movie is my #1 favorite of all time.

I love this musical, one of my favorites of all time, especially because it came out the year I was born. I minor bummer, devotion to accuracy, Natalie Wood's singing voice was actually over-dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also dubbed the singing voice of Deborah Kerr in The King and I. Still a magnificent work of art. (Consider The King and I!)

It was a pleasure watching it with you, it is considered the greatest musical of all time. I first saw it in 1968 and cry every time I see it. My older sister was in the play in high school in 1972. I love musicals and it is my fav of all time. If you every have an opportunity you should watch HAIR from 1979 and also worth it if Jesus Christ Superstar from 1973. I also love The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. West Side Story was released on October 18, 1961, through United Artists, the film received praise from critics and viewers, and became the highest-grossing film of 1961. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, including Best Picture (in addition to a special award for Robbins), becoming the record holder for the most wins for a musical. West Side Story is regarded as one of the greatest musical films of all time. The film was designated as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1997.
