OK, here’s the definition that came up when I Googled “what defines a classic movie”:

“Pre-1980s classic movies are defined by enduring storytelling, significant artistic innovation, and immense cultural impact that transcends their original release era. They often feature profound performances, iconic scenes, and a ‘timeless’ quality, bridging early studio-era artistry with the thematic complexity of the ‘New Hollywood’ 1970s.”

So please do your due diligence when picking suggestions for this poll. Do not include any films still left on the AFI list (I’ll be watching those in the coming weeks, e.g., Gone With the Wind, Singin’ in the Rain, Citizen Kane. Also, please check my current watch list first, since I’ve already seen a ton of classics on the channel.

Please list your suggestions in order of preference, with your top pick first. Include the year for each film in bullet-point format.

Thanks

Some different films from previous times (mostly): • 1955 All That Heaven Allows • 1964 The Americanization of Emily • 1976 Car Wash • 1950 Father of the Bride • 1967 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner • 1964 A Hard Day's Night • 1971 Harold and Maude • 1974 Harry and Tonto* • 1945 I Know Where I'm Going! • 1950 King Solomon's Mines • 1977 The Late Show • 1944 Meet Me in St. Louis • 1948 Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House • 1969 The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie* • 1952 Son of Paleface* • 1967 Two for the Road • 1964 Viva Las Vegas • 1979 The Wanderers • 1978 Watership Down *Not sure about streaming availability; otherwise on Amazon Prime at least. --------------------------------- All That Heaven Allows - Prime Douglas Sirk melodrama, in pulsating Technicolor. The Americanization of Emily - mad chemistry between Andrews and Garner; plot isn't as interesting IMO, but that chemistry ... Car Wash - Fun and serious blue-collar comedy/drama. Father of the Bride - Spencer Tracy, flustered father; Liz Taylor, never lovelier. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - somewhat stodgey now, but this was on fire in 1967. Also my mom's favorite movie. A Hard Day's Night - Bright, funny, clever, plus the most awesome music. Harold and Maude - Romantic, funny, sad, classic. Harry and Tonto - Typical Paul Mazursky; warm, funny; loves his characters. One of the great cat movies. Art Carney, the epitome of an old pro, wins the Oscar without breaking a sweat. I Know Where I'm Going! - Fierce Wendy Hiller knows where she's going, but will she get there? King Solomon's Mines - the one where Deborah Kerr cuts her blazing locks and then shampoos in that waterfall ... The Late Show - Another world-weary Art Carney favorite with kooky Lily Tomlin; things eventually get real. Meet Me in St. Louis - classic turn of the 1900s family drama with music, amazing, I said AMAZING, three-strip Technicolor. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House - nonstop home reno foul-ups, laughs follow. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - Well deserved Oscar for Maggie Smith, but young Pamela Franklin goes toe-to-toe with her and doesn't look ridiculous, no mean feat. Son of Paleface - Bob Hope's starring films from the 40s and early 50s were all about the same; this one features his sassiest leading lady (Jane Russell) and eye-popping *C*O*L*O*R* Two for the Road - The ups (early years) and downs (later years) of a marriage with charismatic leads Hepburn and Finney. Viva Las Vegas - Elvis lets Ann-Margret steal the show. Let's face it, she'd have stolen it even if he didn't let her. The Wanderers - Think "American Grafitti" in New York, circa 1963. Might be better. Watership Down - A cartoon. For kids of some ages, a somewhat family-friendly classic. May not be suitable for any audiences. You've been warned.
