Hey Friends!

I got a little confused off the top of the episode (prob cause I noticed I wasn’t screen recording) but, I pulled it together! I think I was a bit toooo suspect so I was getting thrown off by these Cardassians! But, might be for good reason! I love that Miles O’Brien is getting some more featured episodes! He’s great! All in all, I think this episode really hit me after it was done. As it settled in. Trek always hitting us with big feels and big themes! Gotta love it!

Hope you laugh at my blunders :)

enjoy!!

Such a good episode! Great foundation of a lot more Trek in the future.

Bob Gunton was the actor who played Captain Maxwell, and he was indeed the warden in The Shawshank Redemption. I don't think Beau Bridges was in Shawshank. "The Minstrel Boy" is an oft-heard Irish ballad, and it served its role in this episode quite well, even in an "actors'" rendition, warts and all. Gotta love Celtic folk music. (I do , anyway.)

One of my favorite episodes of S4. O'Brien had some PTSD going. Agree that the Cardassians are interesting. Gul Macet is an interesting character -- and good acting by Marc Alaimo. Any confusion you had is fine - on first watch, the episode not completely clear.

The song they sing is "Minstrel Boy." A version of that song plays during the credits of Black Hawk Down. I too hope we see more O'Brien, I've never watched the series in its entirety, so I don't actually know, but it feels like he's becoming a bigger character.

I really like this episode overall, but, I cannot understand why after disobeying orders and killing 700 people Picard lets him go back and command his own ship. I know we have an enlightened future here, but a man who does that is not enlightened. And to top it all off, after they get Maxwell back on board, they still don’t put him in the brig, but give him quarters that he is confined to. I’m all for rehabbing criminals and helping them, but he clearly shouldn’t have freedom at this point. This is probably the only time I’ve ever questioned Picard’s decisions up until now in the series.

Miles is my favorite character and this episode starts his arc and I am giddy at the thought of you watching my favorite series Deep Space Nine where he is fantastic! Love watching with you!

I thought this episode was pretty good but it didn't quite live up to its potential for me. It would have been so much more convincing if Maxwell had actually uncovered incontrovertible proof of a planned Cardassian offensive with some time-critical element to it. I didn't find Bob Gunton's performance as Captain Maxwell very compelling, but perhaps it was the dialogue - "Information comes my way." and "I know what they're doing! I can smell it!". I thought Patrick Stewart crushed it (as usual) but I only believed Colm Meaney as Miles O'Brien about half of the time. Hard to do the episode's various themes justice in under 46 minutes.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Just as much as the singing, what hits me in that scene is O'Brien/CM's muted "yes sir" and "no sir" 's responding to Maxwell at the end of their conversation. It's all that was needed both in-universe and from the actor and it's written and delivered beautifully.

This was the introductory episode for the Cardassians. You'll have to watch the next seris Star Trek: Deep Space to delve into them. DS 9 is also top tier Star Trek!
