A very impressive film debut for Malick! I love how he has his own distinct style. This was such an interesting film, emotionally beautiful and frustrating. I can't wait to see this again. Music and Cinematography on POINT!

Yesssss! Your deep dive into the genius that is Terrance Malick continues!! Great directorial debut but also spot on performances by a young Sissy Spacek and a very James Dean looking Martin Sheen.. looking forward to your reaction to The New World and especially The Tree of Life, which I consider his masterpiece.... The REAL MYSTERY?? Is how in the *%*& did GRUMPY OLD MEN win a one of the BEST polls you've ever put up!!???

Terrence Malick plays the guy who comes to the door while they're hiding out at the rich guy's house, not because he planned on it like a Hitchcock cameo but the guy who was supposed to play the part never showed up. Since this was an independent film on a tight schedule they couldn't afford to lose a day of filming or wait around for a replacement. For a long time because he's so reclusive this was the only real footage of him If you're wondering what's up with the Swiss family robinson part, that was from the true story that most of this was based off of. By stacking those rocks at the end, he's marking that spot as historical site like a monument people will want to come visit

Hey sis, loved your reaction. I think you are the first reactor that I know of to react to this movie. It was loosely based on actual events. Funny story, I saw this movie when I was in like 9th or 10th grade in the mid 70’s. Pay TV was new back then, and not in most of the US. I lived in eastern, PA and my family was one of the first to purchase HBO which was the only pay channel at that time. This was one of the first movies I watched on HBO. It was also my first Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek experience, even before Carrie. You sound like you are familiar with Sissy’s work, but if you have not seen it, I highly recommend that you check out Coal Miner’s Daughter. It was her first Oscar/academy award role and she was freakin amazing. Tommy Lee Jones also stars in that film.

When I saw this movie at like 14, younger than what Sissy's character portrayed in the film and I was mesmerized by it. Obviously, at 14 I had never been in love yet or even dated, but the 70's was also the era of adventure where kids were outside most of the time and as long as you were back by dinner parents really didn't care what you did. So, her living in the woods seemed pretty exciting, for a 14-year-old 1970's kid’s eyes. The late 60's and early 70's was filled with counterculture and anti-establishment movies. Movies where you hated what bad people did, but you also felt a little empathy, movies like Bonnie and Clyde, The Terminal Man with George Segal, and Across 110th Street, Sugarland Express, Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Godfather, or anti-heroes who bucked corrupt systems like Billy Jack, Coming Home with Jane Fonda, and of course the movie that made Martin Sheen a superstar Apocalypse Now. But I felt "Kit's charisma”, when I first saw the movie and I had never seen Martin Sheen before, so it wasn't his name. I hated the Warren Oates character esp. when he killed the dog, because we had a pet, a little Beagle named Brownie. The person I felt worst for was Kato. I was in tears watching him slowly die and really lost any empathy for Kit for killing such a warm, sweet, gentle soul. When they were driving and later dancing to the Nat King Cole song, that was a wow moment. But it was great watching the movie again, I haven’t watched it since I was a kid, so it brought back memories 😊

Seen shots of young Martin Sheen w/James Dean look but didn’t really know movie. Kit = creepy. Incredible acting by Martin Sheen. Holly’s narration mesmerizing at times. Kit kissing Holly in back seat seemed unnatural. I read Sissy Spacek was 22. Beautifully shot. Wild story. Mix of casual and chaotic. Killings sad. I recognized father as Dep. Sam Wood from In the Heat of the Night (regular watch over the years). Please react to "The Thin Red Line" (1998) directed by Terrence Malick, which I will suggest for a poll. I remember liking The New World (2005) directed by Malick. I am going to rewatch The Tree of Life one of these days. You’ve turned me on two Terrence Malick movies – apparently his first two.
