A more recent sketch page. This one kind of got consumed by foot studies as it went on. Footpaws exist on some multidimensional spectrum and by exploring enough of it I guess you eventually end up on a design that looks right to you. And yeah, this can evolve in some pretty significant ways. Here, I was breaking down some shape and structure elements so I can pull back later and describe them more elegantly.

The giant otter has also returned. I mentioned before that I like taking species that aren't already (let's say) conventionally cute or sexy and trying to find some way to get at their natural beauty. Whether it works or not, we'll have to see...

There’s also the tea room layout I eventually used for "Hazey". I needed at least one view of the place to clarify it in my mind and establish the design vibe of the place, even if most of it was destined to be obscured by the characters doing very distracting stuff.

So, the foot studies aren’t just for fun... There’s a work in progress that gave me a good excuse to brush up on my fox paws. But that's for next time!

It looks like in some studies you have a more animal like plantigrade foot where the middle two toes stick out further than the side toes and on others you have shifted to a more human style but with paw pads and claws

More lovely sketches

Those are some lovely foot paws! I like your giant otter lady, I’m looking forward to seeing more of her. She gives off ‘fishing boat captain with a gruff exterior but a kind heart when you get to know her’ vibes to me.

Is that middle half body Kit Bodega from GameOverse? Or is it very coincidental? Shes very cute and pretty and she drew my eye (ha ha funny pun) immediately. I love all the footpaw angles too, its interesting seeing how simple shapes and anatomy could become stylized and fit into more species

There's been a kind of slow evolution of how I draw footpaws over the years, and every once in a while there's a little jump in style. Right now I'm trying a kind of hybrid approach with the toes, so they're sized and placed in a slightly more humanlike way. I really like some of the results so far, so I'm trying it out in some finished pictures. Maybe adopting it fulltime.

Ha, I like that x3 Giant otters have a gruff look about them, that's for sure. I think she's going to be a little sweeter than she looks, but there might still be a bit of that hard exterior to get through...

Not Kit, just a lookalike. I had to double check the date on this sketchpage, and I drew it just a little before seeing GameOverse. Maybe it was a collective subconscious thing x3 I decided I really gotta step up my footpaw game. The way I drew them before was okay, but if I want to do detailed shading or contours I have to try to figure them out in 3d space...

I think there's some powerful portrait/bust shots that can be done with shadowed eyes like that. I have to try it out...

Definite ‘The African Queen’ style riverboat adventure potential with her 🙂

This kind of studies is always eye-opening for me. I have this tendency to assume drawing to always be something very straightforward, a "jump in and do it" thing. While I have to work through the "backend" of things to make the "frontend" come out good. The studies remind me that there's some background work needed too before the final drawing comes together. Not entirely unlike what I'm doing, even as the nature of it is pretty different.

It's been said that you need to get your bad drawings out before you can start making good ones, and a lot of the time that really feels like the case :P As paradoxical as it might sound, my strongest compositions usually come from the quickest and roughest sketches. I think that's mostly a function of capturing the intensity of the idea while it's freshest. Then it's a process of refining it with proportion and anatomy, etc...
