There’s something to the idea that Zoro won’t cut a woman. It’s incredibly subtle but throughout the series women make Zoro visibly uncomfortable and the only woman he’s done serious harm to was Ms Monday. Even then he did that with his hands not his swords

Alex A

omg im so glad yall understand zoro's situation with women, everyone always calls him sexist but forget hes the one that told kuina he didnt care that shes a woman

Fplus

My opinion of the zoro situation is that he sees all women the same way he sees kuina. He can respect their strength but his complex stems from kuinas gender based inferiority complex. He doesnt want to see a woman go down that same path that she did so he holds back even when he knows he shouldnt. A telling sign is back during skypiea when enel blasts robin with lightning and he gets mad and says "shes a woman" he absolutely will fight women and but if he were to cut them down to him its like cutting kuina down (in my opinion at least)

Michael Hodges

Zoro doesn't want to cut women due to his chivalrous spirit, and this is what Sanji noted and Monet picked up on this during their battle. She underestimated him though because she thought he would never cut a woman (like Sanji) but she was wrong. When push comes to shove Zoro will do what needs to be done, and if there is no other way to accomplish his task he would cut a woman. However, he spared Monet and did not cut her because he found another way of beating her. It's not because he views women as inferior that he doesn't cut them, you would be hard pressed to find moral men who would lay hands on a woman even in our day and age. Also, Zoro has never cut a woman in genuine serious battle in the whole show.

DevilWearsAdidas

I think the thing with Zoro here was that he wasn't trying to kill because maybe what Kuina said to him so long ago changed his mind to where maybe she was right about Men being stronger than Women, but not in a pity way, just to see what their resolve is to test the waters and see if they can muster the strength to rival a man like him. I think it's deeper than the surface levels here because as a man, if I knew that I was 'going to be more superior', I would personally want to see if that's the case by testing the theory.

Fplus

to add on, its just with women who actually are weaker than him because maybe he doesnt have to worry about the gender dynamics as much. Personally i think hes got his own hang ups when dealing with women in general but its extra bad when hes actually fighting one

Nuka

Remember, Zoro was raised by a raging misogynist. His dojo master, Koushirou would always tell his daughter Kuina that she can never inherit the dojo because she’s a woman. Then she died, affectively proving him right in Zoro’s mind. There’s also the scene in Skypiea where Enel attacked Robin and Zoro shouted, “She’s a woman!” So Zoro definitely struggles with those thoughts. It’s not explicitly stated, it’s meant to be picked up using context clues.

Sidebranch

With the many Zoro comments I'll throw my hat in the ring. Zoro is not trying to be sexist but might be generally arrogant. He stated to Kuina that she was his goal and he has kept that belief throughout. He doesn't view women as weaker but rather judges strength - hence occasions when he just can evaluate the opponents strength to be weaker. It has also been shown that he doesn't necessarily want to bully the weak so he tries to just opt out and not do anything which comes across as arrogant and dismissive.

Timothy Ahn

What a great reaction! Warning for next episode, make sure to have some tissues ready.

eimi

I think given the whole history with Kuina, he subconsciously shows more hesitation when it comes to women and I think people can sense it. He understands the complex dynamic that women face when pit against a male opponent because of Kuina. So yeah I really dislike people who just call Zoro sexist because he definitely isn’t. It’s just his way of respecting them is different from someone like Sanji for example.

Green Oak

It would be the exact opposite. He saw how much Kuina hated being considered weak as a woman and never held back fighting her. He doesn't hold back against women, he literally says it's those weaker than him that he subconsciously holds back against. If he were to hold back against women then that would go against Kuina's wishes and also be sexist lmao. It just so happens that the weaker opponents in this case were women.

CeceBell

Tashigi was speaking more from her own insecurities. She believes Zoro thinks women are inferior to him because she doesn’t actually understand him nor know his history. She’s totally judging him and making assumptions. Probably based off of her own experiences.

Pinder

Zoro would prefer not to cut women but would in a desperate situation whereas Sanji just can’t and won’t no matter what. Zoro imo thinks this is shameful or against his code. Btw you guys might kick off some zoro sanjis debates in your comments with that after episode talk lol the toxic debate..

Lizzandro

I just think he’s like mihawk when he goes easy on inferior people

지원

Next week is gonna be a great

DiegoTO

The issue is that Zoro actually helds back against women and has a soft spot for them. Enel hit Robin in Skypie and Zoro said that why if she is a women. I'm not sure he see women as inferior but definitely thinks they shouldn't be harmed

tagog

The issue is he literally does go against this because he will easily and without hesitation cut down a weak man, but falters when its a woman. I know oda wanted this to come off as some form of chivalry but it doesnt really land and is my least favorite part of this arc cus its just weirdly misogynistic. What zoro should've taken from kuina is to take women seriously and treat them the same as men but he doesnt take her seriously the whole fight, oda dropped the ball on this one imo.

PB CX

💜

mike

There are plenty of women stronger than most men though, he also shows women as generally smarter then men.

A2Z

So him being less ruthless to a woman is somehow misogynistic in your eyes. Why not the opposite? Why not that he holds in a higher regard and would rather not cut them unless he has to? In a later arc Zoro would hesitate to cut a man because he is naked. He just has certain preferences on who to cut. Anyway I don't share your opinion. I think you are reading way too much in to it. And I don't think there is anything misogynistic about it.

Jay

Why would Sanji having conqueror's haki be bad?

Gingerrr

FOR REAL i had a 3 hour long discussion w my friend who is a zoro fan about this scene and zoros character reinforcing moments across the series and he literally said the same thing about this moment xD

tagog

Yes because he is treating women differently to men based on how he views them, that is literally misogyny. And him not cutting that guy was played as a gag, while this moment was played as him being somehow chivalrous, which is a very clear difference in context and how each moment is used as a literary device. If it was true that he held them in "higher regard" he would have more respect for them due to the lessons he should've learnt from kuina not wanting to be treated as weak because she is a woman, thats not respect, its discrimination 🤷‍♂️

Profitglutton

Which naked man did he refuse to cut because he was naked?

tagog

Somewhere around ep 900, ill also add that he doesnt not fight this guy cus he sees him as weak, he just thinks its cowardly to fight someone naked and unarmed

A2Z

No, misogyny is hatred or prejudice against women. Treating a women better than you would a man is not misogyny.

tagog

There is more nuance to it than that. It is misogynistic that he, someone who has on multiple occasions shown that he sees holding back on enemies to be disrespectful, would hold back on women simply because they are women. It doesnt mean he hates women or he himself is purposefully misogynistic, but his actions and writing in this specific moment definitely is misogynistic and holds prejudice

tagog

I'd like to add here for reference cus ppl seem to be misinterpreting what im saying, I DO NOT THINK ZORO IS SEXIST OR A MISOGYNIST i just dislike his writing here specifically and think whatever oda was trying to portray didnt land, especially taking into consideration zoros whole moral compass, past and ideals

Jeffrey Xue

I'll avoid adding to the long comment thread that has already developed about the Zoro scene in this episode, but my own take on why Oda chose to write it this way is more meta than anything actually story-relevant. One Piece as a publication is aimed at teenage boys as its main audience. As a result I don't think Oda is comfortable with the thought of his male PROtagonists physically hurting female characters on page (especially ones who are "attractive" in the traditional sense like Monet). Female on female violence? That's definitely on the table, see Nami vs. Ms. Doublefinger and Kalifa. Male ANtagonists harming female characters? Sure, because we're not supposed to be aligning with or rooting for these characters (i.e. Spandam against Robin). But if one of our crew is going to be laying hands on a female enemy, said enemy is often "dehumanized" by given them transformations, like Ms. Merry Christmas and Boa's sisters, even Monet here to some extent. Or by giving them ridiculous physical proportions like pre-fruit Alvida or Big Mom. This concept is certainly not shared by all mangaka who are published in Shonen Jump and the magazine itself doesn't seem to have an issue with it, but I think this is a personal decision that Oda has made. Really the only instance I can recall of a male Straw Hat or ally striking a normal-looking female character is when Luffy hit Vivi that one time. I think Oda realized he wrote himself into a corner with this setup and had to have Zoro settle this "fight" with Monet in an unconventional way that doesn't feel completely consistent with his character. I still completely understand people not liking this decision, but this has been my headcanon as for WHY this scene unfolds the way it does.

Mugi

I think you're thinking too much, he explains his stance right before he attacks. "Of course, there are things I don't want to cut. But, have you ever seen a fierce animal you were sure would never bite?" He still will cut women, he just prefers not to. Also I don't see it written as a chivalry thing. This is still the entry into the New World and I think this is just Oda's way of showcasing how much stronger Zoro really is. Tashigi questioning how strong he is points to that I think.

tagog

Him preferring not to is literally my point lol, the fact that he ends up doing it changes nothing especially with the fact that he EVEN STILL doesnt take her seriously and use haki even at the end, im not thinking too much im just describing what happened in the story and why it comes across as misogynistic. And again, zoro cuts down weak males with 0 issue, him having an issue specifically with women shows prejudice. Its okay to acknowledge distasteful writing in shows you enjoy

Kyle

It's not because they are women but because they are weak women. For Tashigi it's entirely because she looks like Kuina

Star.D.ust

Nothing gets Zoro fired up quite like Sanji. Gotta love their rivalry SO MUCH!😭

Star.D.ust

And the Zoro vs Women argument is 100% nuanced. Everyone keeps bringing up his backstory, and Zoro's whole goal was Kuina because she was the strongest! Why would he find women inferior if Kuina was his goal? He respects her. Another layer is how he experienced that heartbreak of losing Kuina, not from a sword fight or anything physical like that, but from the implication of her losing her will and 'falling down the stairs'. I feel that Zoro understands deeply how differently everyone experiences and fights different battles, physical or not. The other layer is that Zoro is just that strong-willed that he's always striving to be the strongest swordsman. We also know how high his battle IQ is, and Sanji acknowledges Zoro's EQ and soft spot. All in all, Zoro respects Kuina, understands the levels that it takes to be strong and not finding women inferior especially as fighters, and it's a fact that he simply is just stronger. He isn't stronger than them and doesn't want to fight because they're women, I think he's just perfectly aware of his stance and capabilities in battle without overestimating himself and underestimating his opponents. These episodes are definitely something many people find hard to understand. Great reaction as always🎉🎉

Kami

Agree to disagree, would you rather he killed her and back to the camera said some epic one liner lol its much more interesting to me that zoro is multidimensional and is conflicted about hurting women when he doesn't have to. Its not sexist of him to not want to kill a female opponent thats CLEARLY weaker than him. Chivalry is literally being courteous to somone BECAUSE their a woman. Is that misogyny? Maybe? But I dont think its a bad thing 🤷

tagog

Wouldn't have had to kill her to take her seriously, like he literally slashes through weak men with no issue without killing them or holding back. I dont think alot of u realise that the point in what im saying is that the fact that hes holding back at all just because hes facing a woman shows that prejudice, not that hes a bad guy or a raging sexist lol, it would be a little different of a moment if it wasnt for the fact that it very much goes against what he SHOULDVE learnt from kuina who literally hated being treated weaker for being a woman, yet zoro for some reason decides to completely go easy on women as if thats what he should've taken away from kuina. Its just a weird route for him to go and again really shows odas slight misogyny in the writing. You can disagree all you want but oda literally writes women as generally weaker and zoro falls into having a misogynistic moment due to that

Ramon

Zoro dont hurt women because he don’t want sanji bothering him about it later

A2Z

And the point everyone is trying to make is that holding back because she's a woman is Not misogynistic. It goes against the definition of the word. Only Kuina didn't want to be treated differently because she's a woman, and zoro agreed. That doesn't then automatically apply to every woman in the world, he's not going to go a 100 percent against every woman because he did against kuina. Kuina didn't speak for the female gender. And I am sure if a woman asks zoro to treat her as brutally as he would a man, he would. Finally, Oda writes woman to be weaker because They are, both in the real world and to a lesser extent in his world. And writing it that way is not sexism.

Cheshire Cat

It's ingrained in Confucian societies like Japan to view women as inferior. I lived there a few years and felt it very much. Oda, while he does have progressive views on some issues, still grew up in a society like that. It's hard to brush off the misogyny all of a sudden. Those views sometimes appear in his writing. In one of his interviews, he found out that Sanji had a larger female fanbase and somehow didn't like it so he wrote him differently so he would appeal more to men. That's probably why you see a shift in how Sanji's gags are done. What is wrong if a character is liked by women? Is the love given by female readers inferior to those of male readers that he had to go out of his way to change his writing? It's in things like this that you do see a bit of the value systems of mangaka.

Seb

Zoros philosophy is: If you’re strong, I take you seriously. If you’re weak, you’re not worth a real attack. He goes all out against Kuina as a child because she’s stronger than him. Theres plenty of males he won't fight because he sees them as too weak. Strength is what earns his respect — not gender.

Bachira

I mean, I don't think it's misogynistic for men to generally be portrayed as stronger than women. That's reality in real life too. Yes, One Piece is fantasy, but this concept was explained during Zoro's backstory. Kuina was trying to become the greatest swordsman despite being a woman. Oda has never pretended that women are as strong as men in general or on average. He just tries to share the message that you can still be the strongest even if you are a woman because there are always exceptions.

Green Oak

@tagog rewatch the bar scene with Luffy and Zoro. Also this is where Oda dropped the ball? Brother have you not seen how he draws women? He dropped the sexism ball a LONG time ago

Fahad

There was no pun intended there is she is cool she is cool 😆

Irvin Mugo

A good example of Zoro's mentality was Skypeia. When he was walking around lost, a random Shandian came to attack him, and Zoro punched him out. But when the dual pistol guy showed up, Braham, after a few interactions, Zoro realized he was underestimating him and took him seriously, and he ended that fight with a fatal blow. If he feels like he completely outclasses someone, it would leave a bad taste in his mouth to fight to kill, cause remember, at the end of the day, Zoro is a good person. But if he feels like someone is strong and they are staking their life in this fight with him, he will reciprocate and the winner be who it may.

Snowman9712

They are always a few episodes ahead, but they did say that they don't want these kind of comments, because it influences how they will perceive certain moments, so please don't write things like this. It's not bad now, just for the future

marmoset123

why does he fight weak fodders then without hesitation, if he doesnt fight the weak. its obviously about women. it's kinda like Sanji's chivalry but more distilled. he is capable of fighting women if absolutely needed. Sanji will never fight a woman, even at the risk of puttting his team mates in danger.

Carson Edmiston

At this point in the story (not commenting on whether it's correct or not) I had assumed Zoro had conqueror's Haki since we first started learning about it. He's constantly intimidating people with just a look and even though we don't see the "wave" effect or sound effect, his eye has that same drawing style as when people are using conqueror's Haki

N. Ono

Zoro won’t kïll women, i think it’s that simple. Skill wise, not inferior or superior due to gender but simply their skill. He sees sword men and women as simply “sword person”.

N. Ono

What are y’all talking about? Zoro simply won’t kïll a woman. Skill wise he doesn’t see a swordsman vs swordswoman, he sees the skills as a swords”person”. He is above both Tashigi and Monet in “skill” and he knows it. That’s just a man being well-mannered. Like not kïlling a child or an elderly. That’s not misogyny but respect.

OpuSan

Zoro doesnt think women are inferior. Think about Mihawk vs Zoro. He said to Zoro "Im no fool that hunts rabbits with a canon". Its literally a skill issue lol

tagog

Its literally stated and shown that the reason he not only sees them as weaker, but that they are weaker is because they are women. Oda shows this constantly, even going as far as to have a strong male character say he "feels weaker" in a moment where hes turned into a female. In this moment if we use very minimal media literacy we can aknowledge that zoro sees women as inherently weaker and that hes less likely to take them seriously. As ive said before, there are so so many moments where zoro cuts down weak men without an issue, so your point holds no standing.

John Johnson

It's funny when people try to make the scene with Zoro out as something scandalous, when it's literally the most normal thing in the world for a man to have an aversion to physically harming women, even if they deserve it. If a dude slaps me in the face randomly at a bar, there's a fight. If a woman does the same thing, I might push her away, but I'm not gonna punch her in the face in return like I might if she was a dude.

tagog

Are you a man? Who are you to define what sexism is. In a world where people can grow to be 9ft tall and punch through steel it literally is at least lowkey misogynistic that he chose to write women the way he did.

tagog

Yh as much as I love one piece dearly, the misogyny in the story and that oda himself portrays is rlly disappointing and its annoying that so many people (mainly men) would rather blindly defend him than aknowledge he has some old fashioned issues.

tagog

Its unfortunate that he literally never does this tho, every women in this series is always outdone by a man, when a woman is strong shes seen as an outlier, its very clear to see that oda holds some old fashioned views on women and what theyre capable of.

Zuraz

:)

Jhjoe

Because people get unconscious when they get struck by Conqueror's haki, and that is bad for Sanji☠️

Jhjoe

Exactly, it's just common sense.
