The thing with the spring tournament and the 3rd years is that when it takes place is just so so close to the end of the year (most japanese high schools have year turnover around april) so its pretty likely that their schedule between final exams and the tournament will clash at some point, and the time investment needed to secure a good future with their exams versus the time investment needed to succeed at the tournament will be incredibly hard for them to manage. a lot of schools have the 3rd years participate in the first tournament of the season (the one they just lost) but bow out for the second, so the 1st and 2nd years are stable enough by themselves that when they age up after the spring tournament theyve got a strong core for new players aging up into high school from middle. the decision for the 3rd years to stay is a hard one

I wish you guys would do double drops for season 2 onwards, now that you know you like the show. Season 2 especially is going to be painful watching only 1 episode every other day!

I love how everyone's reaction to Ushijima is "That's a grown-ass man."

The third years usually retire and worry about studying for college entry exams in all clubs in Hapan after a certain point in the school year. It's rare for a student to keep up with club activities in Japan. They are so grades oriented. Some that are not going to college or are already accepted may stay.

I cry every. Single. Episode. Of this show, and somehow it just keeps hitting harder the older I get. I think this show just has a way of showcasing humanity's natural goodness, and in the world we're currently living in, that alone is so moving.

I was a bit confused as well with the third years playing and deciding whether or not to continue. Extra curricular activities are great for schools but Japan is a different beat. There’s a time for everything. There’s a time to pass the baton and it may not seem like much but extra hours spent there could make a difference later. We’re talking about a country that is very disciplined and has a societal way of life. It can be seen as harsh or strict but same time it’s the reason why it’s so innovative and holds so much respect for authority and supervisors.

I haven't watched this since it came out(been loving rewatching it!!!) but the way I took the whole 3rd years don't play in the Spring Tournaments just the Fall, I assume this is because Japan as a country puts big pressure/emphasize on going to College/getting a job right after high school. So the Spring Tournament is very close to their last finals/preparing for graduation. (I have no idea if thats right tbh I'm from US)

In the US we kept playing in Spring regionals, states, or nationals for soccer (or the other sports) in my/our senior years. (4th year)
