lmao they are not sick. In China, Japan, and some other Asian cultures even Mexican, it’s believed that if you sneeze, it means that someone else is talking about you behind your back.

Hugo Coutinho

In Japan, a single sneeze is believed to signify that someone is talking or gossiping about you behind your back. thats why they all keep sneezing when hinata or kageyama talk about nekoma

DAIKI🇯🇵

【Shiratorizawa / 白鳥沢】 Schools like Shiratorizawa actually exist in Japan. They’re super well-funded (some even have equestrian clubs), and pretty much every team—not just volleyball—is insanely strong. Also, the name “Shiratorizawa” comes from: 白(shira) = white 鳥(tori )= bird 沢(zawa) = stream So it probably gives off a “white eagle” kind of image.

Kor of the Son

Lol don't worry, nobody is getting sick, it's just a Japanese superstition that if you sneeze, somebody is talking about you. The amount of sneezes indicates the context of how they are speaking about you as well (praise, speaking ill, etc.). You will likely see this superstition referenced in many other anime, so it's good to learn about.

So excited for this season!

13:12 Momma did well with yall

"I'm Hinata Shoyo from the concrete." Both this line and episode set up larger themes going forward. Just a bit of insight, a lot of the schools that Krasuno face off against are private schools with resources and connections that they lack. Basically Karasuno is not only an underdog on the court but off the court as well.

Micher

I think it's quite common in some european countries too. Atleast something I always heard of, whenever I sneezed or someone else did.

Have the ladies ever mentioned what sport they played?

Marie

In the last episode Haylee said she played basketball (and was particularly fond of her high school team) and I don't recall if Carissa mentioned a specific sport.

Sergei

I'm probably alone in this, but I believe there was no malice in Ushiwaka's statement. He wasn't looking down on anyone, he's just too honest - to a fault. It's a matter of perspective. To Karasuno, Seijoh is strong. But to Shiratorizawa - who needs to play college teams to make it count - they were not. I'm pretty sure everyone who has played competitive sports have looked at their schedule and in their minds have said - we have 'x' wins in the bag. You still have to play them, and you still have to win - but if you have the players and they stay committed - you know you have a better chance of winning than losing. And experience counts here. In the many games that we know they played, Oikawa's team has never beaten his team. I get it that the accepted attitude is to say the other team is strong and all, but for someone "honest", that could be too patronizing. And the very best players never think they'll lose, often not because they're arrogant or full of themselves, but because of their belief in what they can do. They still lose, but that just fuels them more. Kinda like our team.

Gamerunner15

It's a thing in anime/japanese culture where if you sneeze it's because someone is talking about you, so anime often shows the person getting talked about sneezing to play on that.

Gamerunner15

You're going to love the study arc!

Ushiwaka is my goat! He is not a bad person!

Renvier

gotta love how straight forward ushiwaka is lmao

magnus

Everyone in the volleyball world knows Oikawa is the best. Ushiwaka is awesome as well,no nonsense, no sugarcoating. He tells it like it is. That’s not arrogance, that’s pure confidence and belief built on relentless training, discipline, and victory after victory.

Kate Finau

Oop, here comes the themes of connections, evolution and even the subtle displays of classism. It's about to peak up in here.

Wei Wang

Shiratori means white bird. Karasu means crow / raven.

demitt

notti

Three of my favorite things coming from this episode: 1) Hinata's classic "JAPAN!"; 2) "I'm Hinata Shoyou from the concrete."; and 3) Ushiwaka's no nonsense self to the point a lot get annoyed when he's just speaking facts (and he genuinely isn't meanspirited at all haha)

lucian serros

LMAO that athlete rage at the end was hilarious
