I talk about how to counterpick your opponents during the draft, what you should be thinking about, and some common heroes that most players have trouble dealing with and examples of good counterpicks against them.

Hi Fan, I am more scared about having a good team or at least a good front line protecting Hammer then Hammer by itself. What can I do if 2 damage slots are already away and they pick Hammer? Stukov/ Stitches aren't always that good against him. Stukov has problems against annoying tanks which don't allow you to cast your silence whenever you want. Stitches hook can be blocked by unstoppable talent from Hammer or Healer or even Johannas Trait. Which choices are left ? Some counter push strategies ?

Yeah at that point you are already at a big disadvantage through draft so not a ton you can do. Hammer is slow for rotating because no mount so if you cannot teamfight win at all, split pushing and pulling their team apart is probably the next best bet, assuming your team will go along with it.

Hi Fan. Can you list some heroes from all roles that are good vs chain cc, tank buster comps? For instance, varian, stu, blaze, kt, tychus.

vs Chain CC unstoppable or high range heroes are generally good. Johanna, Deathwing, Hogger, Hammer with unstop, cleanse healers are all good. Theres a ton of other heroes that can tech into unstoppable or can dodge CC with things like stasis or fast movement speed. Things such as liming and chromie often outrange the CC which can be another way to avoid it. If they are really trying to just kill your tank there are many ways to mitigate that, from picking hard to kill tanks to picking multiple saves (Anduin Pull, Blaze Bunker, Medivh Protect, even 2nd healer can be viable in certain drafts). Also can just counterplay it, for example vs the comp you listed you can have someone focus on immediately canceling stukov silence every time its cast, or someone blind tychus every time he miniguns. On a more advanced level, if your tank has CC he should be able to cc varian or blaze mid charge before their ccs connect as well.

Hi Fan. With respect to counter picks, are we thinking more in terms of team fighting counters, or solo laning as well? The notion of a counter pick makes general sense (Tychus into a DW, e.g.), however, the best scenarios to use that counter are sometimes blurry. For example, if I have a Tychus and they have a Deathwing, should I always (or very often) prioritize staying with Deathwing? Similary for a Cassia counter into a Sgt. Hammer. In general, if a hero with a counter (Deathwing or Hammer, e.g.) shows themselves on a map, should the counter pick (Tychus or Cassia, e.g.) prioritize staying with that hero?

These are more teamfighting counter picks. You don't always have to stay with the hero you are counter picking but often it is good to stay with them as long as you are not sacrificing anything else. For example if you are tychus in the 4 man and their deathwing is the solo laner, you don't have to go to the solo lane all the time as that would leave your team in a 3v4 on the map, it should be enough to just target him in teamfights. Your solo laner likely can get the soak without you being there so its no big deal. On the other hand, if a hammer is split pushing and runs to solo lane to avoid you and you are cassia or chromie, you definitely want to follow him to stop his split push as noone else likely can.

Who are some good counterpicks for artanis? I know that blinds work but I’m curious if you have any additional thoughts

Big thing to keep in mind vs Artanis is that he is only tanky if he can constantly be autoattacking as every autoattack reduces the cooldown of his shield, so outside of blind, an good habit is to try to kite him as much as possible with any character. Malthael vs Artanis for example will always be an Artanis win if both are constantly hitting each other, however if the Malthael marks him and then just kites while spamming Q, the matchup changes to favor Malthael. You can also draft any CC as while he is CC'd he is unable to autoattack, chain stuns, or roots are always solid vs melee assassins that have to dive. Artanis is also far better in small skirmishes (1v1,2v2,1v2,etc) then a full teamfight so if you cant beat him 1v1, then just play safe and try to focus him down in a teamfight. He is not as tanky as other offlaners and will struggle to survive if a full team is there to hit him.
