Update - Realized while doing author's notes that there were two chapters 27s. Should be fixed now.

Whew! Cut this one a bit close. Though, in part, that's because I've also been extending and polishing that Mass Effect concept I mentioned a bit. Anyway, fair warning the editing on this batch might be a bit rougher than usual, I was pretty out of it finishing it up. That said, it's within a couple hundred words of the 15k mark I shoot for, and I'm fairly happy with the results. The author's notes likely be particularly informative this time, so you might want to read them even if you normally don't bother :-).

As always, the new bits of story are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Master Files in the Pinned Post shortly. I will also be doing aforementioned author's notes in the comment section in a bit! Enjoy some more of Harry Potter - Pandora's Box!

Chapter 23: A/N 1: The Defense Position Curse. I subscribe to the fanon theory that the curse was linked to and maintained by the Diadem Horcrux. With that Horcrux constantly active to keep the curse up, Hogwarts knew about it and brought it to Dumbledore's attention. This DOES mean he's aware of the Horcrux issue slightly early, but not by that much. I've always assumed he figured it out after the Diary, and it took him a couple of years to track all the information he needed down. So he's only got an extra 10-12 months to work with, really.

Chapter 24: A/N 1: So, as much as I read allot about Space and know a fair bit about it...Radio Telescopes aren't in my wheelhouse. I did some research on them, but what I've said MIGHT be nonsense. Fair warning. A/N 2: Base 2 versus Base 10. So, I actually have a pretty major background in computer systems. Both the physical hardware and the software side. That said, there's basically zero knowledge out there about how much more effective a Base 10 computer would be. This is because, when you go looking for it, you pretty much immediately find 'don't bother thinking about it, because it's not possible' as the first, second, third, and usually only answer. Everyone dismisses them instantly as we have no way to make them effective or practical. Meaning I'm doing a lot of extrapolating from my own knowledge of how hardware works here. In theory, it should allow you to do the same calculations with fewer circuits, but I could be wrong on that.

Chapter 25: A/N 1: No, Katie is not necessarily the fixed pairing for this story. Right now, they are 14 and 15 respectively, both in a 'first romance.' The pairing for this fic is currently NOT decided. Heck, I haven't even decided if it will be a single pairing or a multiship yet. That said, Katie isn't outright excluded as a possibility yet. I don't tend to write unneeded angst, so if they break up it will be amicable and leave open the possibility that they might connect again when they are older.

Chapter 26: A/N 1: Mawhahahaha, just because the Basilisk is dead, doesn't mean the Diary isn't in play! Lucius didn't actually know what the thing did, after all, and Dumbles position is actually more precarious now that it was in canon. Of course, without the giant Doom Snake, the Diary has to come up with other means and ways. Since Riddle was brilliant enough to even make a Horcrux at 16...well...he can obviously figure it out. As for how it's avoiding notice by Hogwarts...that would be telling.

Chapter 27: A/N 1: I'm a quarter Scottish (the largest amount of any one thing I have in me), so the Scottish comments are made in intentional good humor ;-). Trust me, my Great Grandmother on one side of the family was a first generation immigrant (whereas the other side traces all the way back to the colonial era before we kicked the English out O.O) and you do NOT mess with Scottish women without paying the price :-p.

Chapter 28: A/N 1: Luna! Okay so...I'm probably gonna get some hate for this, but this Luna is a lot more well adjusted because of Lily. This is for a REASON as, as much as a love Luna Lovegood...I don't think I can actually write her canon iteration properly. The character is almost never done well by anyone but Rowling herself, with most people taking her to one extreme or another and losing the plot. So...this version of Luna is a bit different, but still present.

Chapter 29: A/N 1: Nope, I haven't forgotten about Dobby. But this Harry handled the Bludger much more cleanly...

“Witch's brew lolis” , kinda bold to offer underaged girls on a first date. The correct spelling for this britishism is lollies, 2 L’s and the whole ies thing that plurals get when they end in Y . It gave me a good laugh Is this still caused by riddles diary? Or is there something else going on? Cause Riddle in the diary always came across as the most stable of Voldemorts incarnations. And him doing such indiscriminate attacks will absolutely tank any potential of goodwill his followers would have

WhatAFungi

Gosh, the time in between this story getting updated is really detrimental to the story as a whole. I literally couldn’t tell you what the fuck a “Shoggoth” is, even if you put a gun to my head. Is Harry dating at age 12, or is this a world with a late Hogwarts start? Is this year two? I literally can’t remember. Great chapters though. I really like Luna having her own fairy. I’m also a huge fan of this golem plot goin on. Very original so far.

Daemonioros

Remember that Diary Riddle is Riddle as he was at 16-17 years old. So still with a teenaged mindset. Quite possibly it learned of the basilisk dying and in his anger about that is escalating against the students. Then first attack being foiled will only increase his anger of course.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm now a little concerned why Word didn't mark that as an Error. Is Microsoft into Lolis?! I've marked it/fixed it in the Master File for the next upload :-p. Thanks. As for the Diary, yes it is caused by that (I mentioned such in the author's notes). The attacks each focus first and foremost on the muggleborn, with others being mere 'collateral damage.' In truth, the Basilisk attacks were arguably even riskier in that respect. Any one attempt to use it could have ended in a Mass Causality event. So Riddle Horcrux being willing to risk others with a less precise tool fits. Particularly when he possessed a Pureblood to do it, and made it clear when talking to Harry in the Chamber that he'd quickly become more interested in learning how Harry survived, rather than actually 'purifying' the school.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Not familiar enough with H.P. Lovecraft to make that memorable enough, hmmm? It actually wasn't that long of a gap this time, the last update was July. So three months to the day. Hogwarts started at 13 in this story. Both because I wanted to eventually do relationships, and because I honestly didn't think I could write a convincing 11-year-old. Since this is 2nd year, Harry is 14.

Shane89

Can you stop having people call Harry 'Har'. It's not a nickname of any sort and makes me think everyone is a fucking pirate. Is it really so difficult to type out two more letter's?

Shane89

No one ever calls Harry 'Har'! 'Har' isn't a word, it's a sound. Ones pirates make to sound threatening. 'Har' is the first syllable in a two syllable word. What is it with this younger generation and shortening shit? Are you going to get to a point where you just call him 'H' like 'V' from cyberpunk? If two syllable words aren't short enough when having someone address another, perhaps writing might not be your thing. But I know you're quite gifted at writing, because I read your work. Not everything needs to be shortened, especially a name that now sounds like the ending of a pirates speech.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

No one ever nicknames Harry in canon, since none of his friends are the type to use nicknames period. I've never heard a pirate use 'Har' that would be 'Arr.' Shortening names has been a thing since basically the beginning of written history. I'm 39 and some people in my own school days insisted on shortening my name to 'Jay' or 'J.' Which is an extremely common shortening of several different names to effective a single letter. I have no idea where you're coming from with this one, as 'Har' is exactly the sort of shortening certain personalities do as a matter of course for close friends. Katie simply happens to be one of those personalities and also the ONLY ONE who has done it in-story. A personal shortening she uses for him.

Bigbowser

just found this story on fanfiction I love it how often do you update this story

BookDragonling

I've never heard it as a nickname. I once read a story where they shortened the name Sarah to Sar, and it drove me crazy. But I'm not actively reading this particular story so now I can laugh at other people also getting annoyed by 'nicknames'.

Shane89

Its annoying because Harry is already a nickname. Originally a nick name for Henry, which also moved to become a nickname for Harold, Harrison, etc. Moving away from that, 'Har' and Harry are pronounced differently because of the 'Y' at the end of Harry. Seeing 'Har' without an 'E' or 'Y' at the end means you sound out the 'a' in 'Har', which sounds like the letter 'r',you don't pronounce the letter. This is why i said it sounds like a pirate. Yes i am aware that Arr and Har are spelled differently, but without an 'e' or a 'y', they sound the fucking same. This is basic English taught in primary school. It's the same thing with 'Hop' and 'Hope', 'Hard' and 'Hare' is another example that is exactly why it is annoying. Harry is a two syllable word! Why does it need to be shortened

Shane89

Also, nickname's for Harry, from people who struggle to enunciate or pronounce words, are Hal, Haz/Hazza, H, Hank, and even Harrison. You know what all these words have in common with Harry that Har doesn't? The A is more enunciated, which means you are saying the 'a' more like its name, as opposed to saying the sound, which for 'a' sounds like 'r'.

I started and binged this in one day. I am loving this so far, 1 dollar a month is well worth it. When is the monthly poll?

greatGUARDIAN100

Just started this story from QQ, binged it all in a few hours, love your work! Also, I found a typo (but only the one!) 'but since only a cross-selection would be available at the in-Hogwarts store and prices would be better at their own ships, it wasn’t a very big risk. ' should be shops not ships.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the typo spot! It's been fixed in my master file and will be included in the next update :-).

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Normally, the monthly poll starts on the 9th, this month was an exception since there was a poll about modifying the poll. It's currently up through the 25th.

I was just rereading this to refresh for the new update, and I had a thought as I hit the computer section: I really want Harry to talk to someone with more familiarity with computers and have them suggest that if he's going to up the base, he might as well go a bit further and aim for base-16. First and most importantly, this would let him call them "hex-bits," and tell me that doesn't fit a magical computer perfectly ;P. Practically speaking though, it would mean that basically everything from the 4-bit microprocessor level on up, as well as all hex-based memory, could be ported almost directly over from existing systems.

twilightwanderer

Regarding base-10, the main advantage I see is avoiding floating-point conversion rounding errors. The biggest drawback I see is having to fully start from scratch regarding system architecture, given that everything from Boolean logic on up no longer maps cleanly (although to be fair that applies to everything that's not binary adjacent). I guess for base-10 specifically, it seems like a lot to drop that factor of 5 into things with no build-up, because that's a big step up in states to work with.
