Forward! To the first Halfway Broken release of the month!

A special note first, since I'm not sure how many people read all the way through my rambling posts :-p. You'll notice that I finally updated the character sheets PDF. I've been telling myself I needed to do that for months, since they've grown a lot over the timeskip. Updating the thing is tedious as hell though, so I kept putting it off. At this point, I felt it really needed to be done, even if doing so cost me enough time that I'm not as far ahead of writing as I try to be -_-. Also, while it's labeled 'Post Amazon Lily,' the truth is its actually a bit spoliery for Sanji in particular, as it accounts for something that hasn't fully happened yet. Though anyone familiar with post-timeskip One Piece shouldn't exactly be taken by surprise by it. I just didn't want to have to update the thing again anytime soon >_<...

Anyway! With the special note taken care of, I can say that I'm extremely pleased with finally getting to this particular release. Something I set up to be going on in the background, even giving everyone an Ace perspective at one point as a pretty big hint for those able to put the pieces together, finally slots into place. As does the general framework for shifting out of the Timeskip Period a bit early. An intentional choice, as there are certain events I intended to utterly derail from pretty much the moment I was aware they existed -_-.

I think people will like a few of the twists I added, including how I'm intending to handle Jinbe and Reiju :-). But more on that in the Author's Notes in the comments, as I don't want to spoil the chapters!

As usual, the new content is attached to this post in various formats. Likewise, author's notes will follow in the comments when I have a few free minutes. Remember, Master Files are only updated with the final monthly post of each story, so for now this is the only place to get the new content! Enjoy the latest One Piece: Halfway Broken folks!

Yay! Can’t wait to read it :D

Chapter 140: A/N 1: Part of the reason I was willing to skip past most of the Germa fighting was that, honestly, what I intended for Fishman island was a better, less chaotic place to handle what I wanted to show. Namely, I wanted to give some time to a few of the crew who we haven't see fight all that much, particularly not after all their training. Sanji gets to show off that he HAS closed a lot of the gap between him and the higher power members of the crew, particularly with the Raid Suit. Hina gets to show off her new fighting style, though I'm less happy with how well that went. Vivi I'm VERY happy with, as she finally gets to show of what a badass she's turned into. Something she herself doesn't even realize is the case, because her measuring stick with the rest of the crew has her concept of strength completely out of wack. Nojiko shows off the most change, I think, from her original fighting style. But I like the way it's turned out. Even Perona gets a moment to shine, showing off how much more dangerous she is than canon...and reminding people that Kaya has done work on her, which I suspect a lot of people forgot :-p.

Camille

Lmao Luffy hasn’t spent or earned a single Beri since Marineford and Shiki xD

Tsorov

"The walls of the Throne room gave up the ghost" LMAO, are you german? Cause that seems like a direct translation of "den Geist aufgeben", and not an english phrase.

Chapter 141: A/N 1: Whew! So, this was one of the bits I was itching to get too! I've been working pretty much the whole time I covered the timeskip to adjust my plans for the New World to account for all the major butterflies I set loose! One of the absolute largest was Dressrosa. Direct commentary on that belongs to the A/Ns for the next chapter. But one of the SIDE EFFECTS of the changes I made there is that the massive draw of Ace's Devil Fruit at the tournament, that brought in such a huge array of characters for the Arc...obviously isn't going to happen. Ace is alive, after all! This was a potential problem because it's where Luffy got the 'Grand Fleet' that makes the WG consider him a Yonko in canon. I don't believe they promoted him to that position over Kid or Law just because he soloed Kaidou. ALL of the Yonko, even Shanks, have significant numbers of subordinate crews to call on. So I've always figured that one of the key metrics is having sufficient ALLY firepower to be a threat. With many of those who WOULD have made up the Grand Fleet unlikely to show up, I needed a replacement solution. Enter the Kuja Pirates, the Sun Pirates, and the as-yet-unnamed crew Reiju will be putting together. These three represent POWERFUL subordinate crews, that easily equal any two or three of the canon crews that started flying Luffy's flag. Putting a replacement structure for the Grand Fleet together. This also allows me to keep Jinbe, Hancock, and Reiju close, without having them around every single day to complicate the already busy crew environment. It does mean that I won't be adding Jinbe to the crew directly. Frankly, though...I've reread everything through the end of the Wano arc now, plus a bit beyond, and he has utterly failed to impress me. He mostly just acts as a serious foil for the silliness of the crew, which is something I toned down a lot from the start anyway. He'll still be around, though, being a subordinate crew captain and with Vivi able to link them all together so easily for operations :-).

Chapter 142: A/N 1: Double whew! A thing I've been setting up since Thriller Bark! I added PLENTY of foreshadowing, so at least some of you probably guessed I was pointing Ace at Punk Hazard. Specifically following the trail of kidnapped children, since Ceaser targeted Whitebeard territory after Garp gutted G5. The Remnant acted as an agent to discover what was going on there...and to finally reveal what has happened to Dressrosa with String-boy having kicked it early. The SMILE production was important enough to Kaidou that OF COURSE he grabbed up the island when Doflamingo's crew reached out for help after their boss kicked it. The fact the Arena actually fits REALLY WELL with the Beast Pirates' mentality only made that more logical. Of course, that means a significant force of Beast Pirates is protecting it...which just so happens to give Luffy and Co a very good reason to do there, despite not having the adventure on Punk Hazard...

...oooorrrr I might have just forgotten to update that line, since he's the only one that has it :-p. I'll fix it once more people inevitably point out other screw ups with the updated sheet.

Camille

Haha no worries I assumed that was the case, I just found it funny 😁

Novus's Fanfiction Works

...no? Gave up the ghost is a pretty common phrase. Admittedly, usually for people, not walls. But that was just anthropomorphizing.

Tsorov

I don't think I've ever heard that sentence in english. Maybe it's not really used in writing and more commonly used in casual laguage? I don't really speak english, I only read it.

Mr Fox

Hey one of your pictures is wrong. It says sanji but thats clearly stealth black. who everyon knows is a totally different and much cooler character. Definitely not the same person

Tsorov

I have feeling that Dressrosa is going to be visited by a fleet, and not by a crew. Law seeing the united fleet of three ships on fishman island flying the same flag would be an interesting POV too.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

It might be because the phrase comes from the King James Bible. Since that was one of the first truly mass produced English translations of the Bible, a lot of it's phrasing entered common English. But it would mostly be common in English speaking countries, I suspect.

Zai

Shouldn't Luffy have a bonus 3 perk for luck? Also, I'm hoping Luffy invests some stats into wisdom and intelligence to get them to bonus 3, I'm quite curious what it'll be for intelligence and I'm wondering how far voice of the world will go and if it'll affect things.

Zai

So is it at Dressrosa they'll meet Momo and Kinemon now?

Orchamus

I love how Vivi is taking more and more queues from her crew in her attitude. While she's not a fight but she still shows a remarkably sassy attitude. Also damn, Nojiko still got that shadow in her heart. Makes sense, but damn, hardcore Nojiko

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*checks* ...Yep, he should have a third Luck bonus. I'll add that to the edited version I'm already working on. I always miss a few things when I update the status sheet...which is part of why I hate doing it T-T. ...I'll remain silent on Momo and Kinemon for now. Anything I could say would be a massive spoiler for changes I intend to make.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Her crew...and Hancock, who has been both training her and hanging out with her while mentoring Shirahoshi :-p. Yep. Remember Nojiko had to actually WATCH all the things Arlong did, while Nami spent a lot of time away from the island. While Nami could let things go to an extent as a result, Nojiko's older and saw and lot more horribleness first hand. She doesn't hate Fishmen as a whole, at least, but ANYONE that is positive towards Arlong near her is likely to get their spine ripped out.

twilightwanderer

I'll corroborate: "[thing] gave up the ghost" is a common turn of phrase in both English speech and writing, at least as recently as Millennials, it might be less common among younger English speakers

twilightwanderer

Thanks for the update. It's nice to see the away team get to strut their stuff some, and I'm really liking the setup for the next couple arcs. The comment of making a splash in the New World also has me wondering if the plan is to hit Red Port for the Alliance retaliation, then for the Straw Hats to hit whatever the equivalent facility is on the New World side.

twilightwanderer

On the feedback side, there were a couple lines that felt a little tonally off to me. The first was Vivi's inner commentary about small dick energy, but I'm guessing from other comments that that's supposed to be Hancock's influence (and the rest of the crew to an extent). The other is that it's hard for me to tell whose perspective the post-battle meeting is from, or if it's a detached third person narrator, which makes the "Admiral ItBurnsWhenIPee" feel strange since I don't know whose voice to read it in.

For once I have no idea how the pieces fit in the story! Obviously this is the prelude to yonko arc, but there will be no punk hazard arc or whole cake. Excited to find out the puzzle. Better have Luffy ask for that pink smile, it’s Kaido’s fruit after all. One thing you have not seen the ramifications of is the attack on the red port. It’s where celestial dragons get their supplies from, if the alliance takes it out, it will cause massive supply issues in mariegoise. Basically all exotic goods coming from east and south blue will not be coming up. With luffys connection to the revolutionaries, there is a big strategic advantage for Dragon in starting to cut supplies to the new world red port. I imagine it’s far more difficult to supply that side in general. Plus Dragon still has his base in Baltigo in that side of the line. Using this as a smokescreen to plan more revolutions is a good idea. Also the reverie is starting in a few months no? Bad time for the red port to be out of commission. Preventing the meeting from taking place and controlling when it’s taking place is a massive strategic advantage. One question, who are the seven warlords in this story post timeskip? No hancock, no weevil, no dorflamingo, plus the original vacancies of Moria, Crocodile and Jinbei.

Joseph Nelson

Didn't garp disband the warlord system whe got made fleet Admiral

Chris7A

I don’t remember. Sounds like something he would do.

xrunarx1

I think it was that after Crock,Geko and Flamingo died. Boa and Jimbe didn't show up. And Mihawk's crippling, they just desided not to reform the goup. Tho they kept Kuma.

Chris7A

Right! I had forgotten. Poor men, I killed some of them twice. Thanks

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ah, it's supposed to be a general perspective. Which means I should fix the Admiral comment -_-. Going to be honest, most of the reason I kept having Luffy refer to him by those names was so I didn't have to spell Sakazuki again. For some reason I kept having to look it up every time...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Meh, the Remnant can have the lesser fruit. After all, Luffy will get the real one when he offs Kaidou. ;-) As for the Warlords thing, as others mentioned, Garp immediately disbanded it when he took over. It's also part of why he expanded the Admiral roster from the three of before, selling the increased numbers as a way to offset the Warlords going bye-bye. Though the WG made that conditional to him accepting some of their choices, like Aramaki.

twilightwanderer

You could use Akainu (his epithet) instead, if that's easier, although I guess he won't be coming up much after this. Actually, that brings up another question: did the Marines go to more than 3 Admirals? My memory for after Marineford was that Kuzan and Borsalino would stay Admirals, and Gion was promoted to fill Sakazuki's slot after he was maimed at Marineford. Now, it seems like Sakazuki's still an Admiral, and Issho and Aramaki are/were full Admirals as well. Am I misremembering?

Novus's Fanfiction Works

They did. Garp created more Admirals as a counter balance to disbanding the Warlords, feeling that more Marines was better than government back pirates.

Chris7A

Two noodles are better than one! Especially with the real dragon lurking on elbaf! Remnants are allies though so good enough.
