I painted again!!!

I can't believe it myself, but I painted something just for me. I wanted to make an abstract piece and I knew it wouldn't be to everyone's preference, but I didn't mind. I wanted to create from my heart, and so.. I did?!

I left behind the thoughts of what other people would think, the idea of having to share it, even the expectations that it had to become something beautiful. This was just for me.

With the risk of sounding very "up in the clouds", it did make me feel more connected to myself. As if I was more myself.

The painting is finished, and it's called "anxiety changed me". Now I want to make a whole abstract collection!

I remember how in art school I would let myself explore different styles and expressions freely. It was honestly down right theraputic, and so was making this piece. I felt a whirlwind of emotions and it was something very healing about getting to turn it into something more tangible. Pieces of that pain were no longer "stuck" inside of me, and did not seem so scary anymore. I was already carrying it after all.

I hope this can inspire you to be bold with what you want to do. Even if you don't know what that is. Just to allow yourself to explore, try, (have fun,) make mistakes and grow. There is nothing that builds trust to yourself more than expanding that comfortzone and choosing to be brave for the things that matters to you.

Oh and, side note - speedrunning taught me how nice it is to laugh when it doesn't turn out the way I want. Compassion for myself is a GAMECHANGER.

Grateful I get to be on this journey with you 🧡🌻lots and lots of love, Joy

Oh and! I want to stress that, I feel okay with the possibility that (and I am shocked by being ok with this) the art itself is something you could dislike. It's a very freeing feeling and I think, perhaps, my most honest source of creativity comes from a place such as this. Art and creativity is (to me) not just about: "this is pretty to look at" either. The creations that makes me think and feel, or that leaves a lasting impact, those are the ones I am very fascinated to come across. But all that aside, if we are creating for our own growth and healing - then it really shouldn't matter how "pretty" it is, at all, right?

While the motif maybe isnt something I'd put on my wall, it definitely has the feeling of "light breaking through the darkness" and I am SO happy for you that you not only felt creative but that you also made it a personal piece that has inherent meaning to you. I am extremely happy to hear you have summoned compassion for yourself - that is such an essential part of feeling well!

Ok who am I kidding I'd totally put it on the wall. :-P

I am so proud of you, Joy!! I am incredibly familiar with how difficult it is to set aside possible judgement and criticism from yourself and others while creating. Or even trying to get away from analyzing your work in real time. (I went to art school, too, and I believe a lot of conventional art school/gallery critique spaces set us up for these negative connotations about what others might think or change or judge.) Ultimately our work is for us to learn something from, and if it has an affect on someone else, that's a bonus and out of our control! That being said, this piece makes me feel a direct connection in the middle of my chest. Like, dredging through the blanket of anxiety to reveal the light. I love it! It really tells an emotional story :'). Thank you for sharing <3
