Maybe the epitome of "movie watched just because it was on TV a lot". An Encore Movie Channel classic. Also, not the first Philip Seymour Hoffman movie I ever saw (that's probably Twister, most likely), but the first time I ever singled him out specifically. "It's about purity". Not particularly insightful satire, but worked well for me at 15 years old haha.

Dying at the Madame Web as a Drag Race acting challenge tangent

I saw dune 2 at a regal imax yesterday and we still had the roller coaster intro with the exploding popcorn!

Two random notes: John Krasinski as an extra (uncredited?) when PSH was about to talk to the real judge. Also this movie was shot in the titular Manchester-by-the-sea?

A typically great THOB episode but in a discussion of Mamet films it felt very disrespectful to not even mention absolute bangers like Homicide, Things Change, or that incredibly bitchy, all-caps letter he wrote to the writers of The Unit that got leaked online in like 2010

David Upton

I just feel that I MUST add that Lindsay Lohan took the Madonna role in a London staging of Speed-the-Plow when she was really still in the thick of her more difficult years, and it was (sadly) as awful as you might expect.

Tangentially related from the Happiness discussion -- is that Golden Globe Screenplay nomination the wildest Golden Globes nomination ever? It's not even stereotypically Globes-weird, just an out and out bizarre thing for them to embrace

Mountain Dew Code Red: a delicious soda pop for cool kids.

If you want an excuse to get Alec’s 6 (7) timers club rolling along… please please please do “Talk Radio”!!! I know it’s before the date range you guys usually do, but no doubt this Pulitzer Prize nominated stage adaptation of the Bogosian play directed by Stone had it in spades. Would love to hear y’all’s thoughts.

loving the soft drink discourse, Joe you GOTTA try the Baja Blast!

I have a friend who did a playwriting and directing workshop/internship with David Mamet years ago... said Mamet lives up to his reputation as a misogynistic jerk. I hated this movie when I first saw it...

Some insight on why Jessica Lange missed the Tony nomination from her recent Vulture interview.. 'Oh, I should have been [apprehensive]. I should have thought about this a lot instead of saying “yes” to Blanche DuBois. I mean, I really opened myself up to being crucified. I know I should never say this, but I didn’t have the kind of director I needed for my first time onstage in a big Broadway theater in something like that. I needed a lot of help, even in terms of understanding what it means to project beyond the footlights.'

It's interesting to put this movie up against Bowfinger which does the Hollywood satire 1000x better.

Did Joe not mention the Verdict when going through Mamet?

David Kirk

Now I am worrying about revisiting Glengarry Glenross. I hope that holds up.

Perfect place for my deranged work trivia question: Since Mountain Dew released its first alternative flavor in 1988, the soda has continuously offered a vast number of limited-edition, restaurant-specific, and/or holiday versions of the drink. Which one of these flavors is made up? Mountain Dew Red Mountain Dew LiveWire Mountain Dew DEW-S-A Mountain Dew Code Red Mountain Dew Merry Mash Up Mountain Dew Voo-DEW Mountain Dew Black Light Mountain Dew Voltage Mountain Dew Baja Blast Mountain Dew Berry Monsoon Mountain Dew Pitch Black Darth Dew Mountain Dew Typhoon Mountain Dew Dewitos Mountain Dew Dewshine Mountain Dew Gingerbread Snap'd Mountain Dew Baja Passionfruit Punch

Movie league got a nice little shoutout on Filmspotting — the cardiac surgeon champ was in that league. (Definitely the least Oscar savvy of the film pods lol)

Great ep! My fav part of the Liz Golden Globes appearance HAS to be when she say 'Wonnnnnder Boys'. The Jinkx Monsoon version is so, so good
