Full steam ahead about the Queen Mary 2 and this week's episode! And apologies to UK Garys, who it turns out have never had any (legal) means to see the film!

Ethan McElhinny

Have to listen to the ep, but looking forward to some Weist talk. She was the highlight of this as my memory recalls.

Carly

I thought I was just crap at looking for it! Didn’t realise the uk have been neglected

Man, I bet soderberg has body guards to prevent zaslav from 86 ing his materiel

Clint

happiest season (2020)… “movie” or “tv movie”??? 🤔

Sam Hetherington

Next May Miniseries: This Had Oscar Buzz at Sea Recorded aboard the Queen Mary II, set sail for dashed awards hopes and a deep dive into Oscar’s love affair with the sea.

Chris

Hollywood, greenlight Barb & Star Meet Almodóvar ASAP.

Clint

this being soderbergh reminding me of chris on his letterboxd calling challengers “soderbergh-ian” and thus making me imagine zendaya working with soderbergh. her perf in challengers was kind of giving j.lo in out of sight now that i think about it… ETA whoops just now hearing chris mention this on the pod 🤭

Chrissy

I just learned that Max removed Mrs. Fletcher and Run a while ago. Zaslav, may you never know peace

Hayley

I think you two helped me find this movie and (rare bright spot of 2020) so a belated thank you! Also because moments before you mentioned Ariana DeBose, I heard Chris’s “shut the fuck up” in the Jamie Lee Curtis cadence post ADB BAFTA song. Pray for me.

I have struggled with the line between feature film and tv movie, and have decided that intent is key. A made-for-tv movie must be just that. Intentionally made for TV. So things that are acquired at film festivals and turned into streaming only fare can still be feature films.

I just started listening to Las Culturistas during a recent long drive (very late to the party). The cross-over potential now seems obvious.

I understand that there have to be distinction between theatrical and "made for tv" films for awards purposes, and there's a difference in budgets and resources, but ultimately a film is a film. Prey and Fire Island are TV films and yet they are more cinematic than CODA and Green Book. More got the chance to see The Taste of Things and Anatomy of a Fall on their TV than theaters. It's all the same in the end. To me anyways.

A big *HUG* and "Same, girl!" to the turning 40 talk. I took it really, really hard, too, Joe. Exact same thoughts of "it's over" and "I've wasted my life." And new meds DID help! (Honestly, I was also mad that I was being such a cliche about it, too. But cliches are such for a reason, and knowing lots of other people go through the same thing doesn't always help.) On a MUCH lighter note, any of my fellow Garys who are spreedsheet sickos like our fearless hosts and might have noted this down for the record books: what is the latest in an episode that a 60-Second Plot Description has occurred? I've been wondering every time, such as in this episode, it's a quarter-hour in and we're still not there yet.

Clare

I haven't listened to this EP yet, but I hope you talk about the other film with Lucas Hedges from 2020 because in my brain they are the same movie.

Marie

don’t know if i’ve ever been happier to open my podcast app in my life

Absolutely ran here to say, “I could really use a Wiest right now, Wiest right now, Wiest right now…..”

Chauncey Telese

What's the announcement tied to Now & Then?

Brandon Skidmore

Not me yelling “Poltergeist!!!” at the red light with the window rolled down while the guy in his convertible stares at me in confusion.

Suzanne Carter

I just wanted to encourage you both to try The Knick. It’s a little gory, but so worth it - maybe the most unjustly ignored tv show of the Peak TV era. And the cinematography is so beautiful that it’s tough to believe it was tv and not a film. I am a Sodey fan, and I would rank the series as a whole with his best movies.

BAM did a Jeffrey Wright retrospective in February I believe where they screened the entirety of Angels in America in one afternoon with a Q&A with Jeffrey and Tony Kushner. So, it’s happened!

Thales

Lucas please come back! (Thank you Mike Faist Nation for providing weekly clips of those two kissing on not-Twitter)

Kara Hogan

Here to contribute to the LOGAN LUCKY love! I’ve shown that movie to so many non-movie people who have absolutely loved it. Just a great movie!

SO glad you included this one even with the weird 2020 rules. It deserves the attention but mainly thank you for directing us back to it. I remembered this as such a breath of air that year. It was a gift to get this level of work at the time. But like a lot of 2020 stuff it got lumped in my head with a lot of other ephemera. I'll rewatch soon.
