We've got another awards show recap for you this month (with an early detour into the waters of grumble noises Drag Race), this time for the 1999 Independent Spirit Awards! We get to talk about some less discussed movies in the well-trodden path that is 1999 movies! Topics include James Schamus' keynote speech (??), the performance that could/should have been a bigger talking point than it was that season, and Jennifer Tilly as an awards show host.

Well, I've never watched a Spirit Awards ceremony, but I suppose I'm about to!

Sam Hetherington

Exceptions episode on The Straight Story please!

Braden Poapst

We, as gay people, get to choose the seasons of Drag Race that bore us to tears.

Carly

Enjoying thinking of the alternate universe where it was spike lee and sofia coppola who were the indie royalty couple

Jenny Maurer

I dunno, I’m all for more abstract snatch games or like.. all gender tribute to post punk synth pioneers ?

Michael

No shade All shade, yall kinda did bad on John cusack filmography lmao 😜

Whenever Chris and Joe disagree I always find myself on team Joe. I dunno why and no offense to Chris, we just never see eye to eye. But I’ve always assumed that one day that would change. And now that day has come. Chris’s take on Run, Lola, Run which I can only describe as “can’t even be bothered to care about it enough to dislike it” is unabashedly correct and I commend him on his correctness.

We need you two to do a tangent on Shannel's christmas house

Okay, I'm watching the show now, and...Why does BILL POPE have better timing than 96% of the presenters?! Him & Gershon, fun bit, with people who seemed to *enjoy* being there! Not as good as John Waters pronouncing "Razzie" "Rozzie," but, for me, few things will be now.

started watching indie spirits in the 2000s (when they’d rerun it on AMC) and can attest to the fact that they gave a spotlight to very obscure random indies that don’t really exist yet i still weirdly have in the back of mind…blue car (2002) and stephanie daley (2006) come to mind…

no one: me: “kimberly j. brown was in halloweentown!”

Rebecca Nardi

It came up a bit with Beau Travail, but thank you for not perpetuating the lie slash institutional gaslighting that The Virgin Suicides is a 1999 film, which it is not. Related, how did The Virgin Suicides not get nominated for any Indie Spirits the next year??

Jenny Maurer

Anyway the person who should have been giving the anti telecommunications act of 1996 was one of the former members of crass the anarcho punk band or the late great d boon

Waters. Legend. (Im not even cool enough to like much of his work but he's a treasure)

Marie

Just wanna say I love when you guys talk about drag race bc I hardly ever disagree lol

George Wishart

I’m halfway into watching the show and my god this thing is so awkward. I’ve crawled into the springs of my couch, so difficult to watch

Elliott Sainsbury

The reactions to James Schamus' talk are excruciating. Him making this rambling Cassandra speech while people ignore him and Chloe Sevigny pretends to shoot herself in the mouth is such a perfect metaphor. There's also a FULL jump scare though when they jump-cut to a close up of a blond woman in a red top (sorry to this woman, IDK who she is).

Keegon

RuPaul: That does sound interesting but how are you going to make your performance as, um…The Atmosphere, funny?

Frank McCormick

Nina West has an unfortunate mouth situation where she constantly looks like she's peeved and/or holding back tears, and I think that's a lot of her problem.

Jack

It’s important to bring up that Jennifer Tilly is going to be a Friend Of next season on RHOBH. One step closer to talk show…

Joe references “this movie Three Seasons that won the cinematography award.” I actually saw this 20ish years ago and have a region free DVD of it. It’s a Vietnamese movie with intertwining stories of people in then-contemporary Ho Chi Minh City; Harvey Keitel plays a veteran returning to the country to find his daughter. I don’t remember a lot other than I liked it at the time and the cinematography is beautiful; maybe I should fire it up for another watch.

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

I couldn’t agree more regarding made-up characters on Snatch Game.
