We're basically at the movie calendar midpoint of the year, so what better excursion for this month than a deep dive check-in with the awards race before the fall festival season begins?! Oh and it's a DEEP dive at nearly 3 hours (drunk face emoji) - we get into films from the first half of the year, the few festival announcements we have thus far, and the movies still to come! Don't be shy about your favorites of this year in the comments (help your fellow Garys catch up to what they might have missed) and your most anticipated to come!

Opens podcast app -> sees 2hrs 47 -> Chris shading people that don't get Kinds of Kindness -> why I love this podcast!!!

JPB Gerald

Pretty sure that technically a sexy dirtbag character won Best Actor this year

Stuart K

I can't thank you enough for doing these episodes. A few months ago I re-listened to all of your past festival episodes and noted the then-upcoming films that I never saw and have been slowly working my way through them (including DMing the cinematographer of 2022 Sundance's 'Blood' asking where I can find it and him telling me it's comes out next month and it's now called 'I'll Be Your Mirror'). Completely agree with Joe that June Squibb deserves the nomination for Thelma if people would only watch it.

Stephanie Radcliffe

Chris is 1000% right about Hitman. The release of that movie is infuriating. Netflix didn't even release it Canada, I had to stream it from my library app!

Chas

Thelma is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year so far, and June Squibb absolutely deserves all the awards love. I cried and laughed almost the entire time I watched it which I can’t recall the last time that has happened.

Ethan McElhinny

I don’t have faith in the Academy that Challengers will make the cut, but I love being wrong! Given the Horizon Part 2 talk we can assume this was recorded prior to July 10th lol

Ben Thomas

Great episode, hope you got some rest after. You didn't mention it in your no release date list, but will Julian Schnabel's follow-up to at Eternity's Gate - In the Hand of Dante - suddenly pop up and get award attention. The cast is wild...

John Ananias

I'm about to start this up, and I was real surprised, pleasantly + perhaps more than I should've been, to see THIS runtime for a JULY check-in. Away we go! Also, this is off-topic but ON the topic of runtimes: In a Cinematrix from a couple days ago, there was a "Nicole Kidman + movie with a 2 hours+ runtime" space, and I went with THE HOURS, because what show do I listen to that would make me think, "I wanna use THE HOURS when I can here?" This Had Oscar Buzz! Welp, I turned out to be wrong, which I'd probably have remembered if I'd...actually ever seen THE HOURS (point of shame, but I'll get to it!). What I'm getting at is, I cannot believe THE HOURS isn't at least 2.5...y'know, hours...really felt like i was on safe ground with that guess. This has been a vent.

I had to stop listening after Problemista so I could go watch Problemista! It's my favorite movie of the year now too

Sam Hetherington

After hearing you talk about Problemista, I checked to see if it got a UK release and they unceremoniously dumped it onto VOD here 2 weeks ago. BUT that means I was able to watch it immediately and I'm in love with it too. One of the best of the year so far for sure. Top tier Tilda.

Braden Poapst

I recently relocated to LA, and regarding Janet Planet, I was planning to see it on 7/3, and I checked one day and had showtimes in my area, and then checked later that same day, and the showtimes… Disappeared, seemingly in favor of more MaXXXine showtimes, so I think A24 definitely let it die on the vine.

Benji Black

Wonder what happened to Genndy Tartakovsky's Fixed. It's a traditionally animated comedy that is Rated R about the last 24 hours before a dog is going to get neutered. Don't know if it would contend but it would neat to have Genndy Tartakovsky Academy Award nominee.

Frank McCormick

Funny to hear Joe talk about liking Horizon when apparently most people didn't! Also, very doubtful it'll be in any Oscars races with being a flop and the second part possibly not even getting a theatrical release. Maybe Chris's fart noises were a premonition!

Keegon

Problemista is one of the best films of the decade so far. The Charlie Kaufman comparison is apt but Torres’ worldview and playfulness makes it something wholly new. I feel like we’re seeing the Being John Malkovich of his career and I can’t WAIT for the Eternal Sunshine.

Jenny Maurer

Sean baker unfortunately apparently thinks Kyle rittenhouse did nothing wrong as of 2021

Samuel Mc

No mention of Juror #2?

Darren Ranck

Now that The Outrun has US distribution, I think Saoirse is an early front runner.

Rob Watson

I’m Team Joe re: Thelma. That movie *destroys* when you see it with a crowd, and there have been more stories written lately about how well it’s hanging in at the box office.

Kyler Guebert

Probably a WILD question but you never know: What would a PADDINGTON IN PERU Oscar path look like? Would performance or craft be more likely to be recognized?

Luca Bruno

The way the branch has been trending lately I can still see BLACK BOX DIARIES (premiered at Sundance) having an outside shot at a doc nom. (V good movie in my opinion) Also, just because it didn‘t get mentioned: HAND OF DANTE by Julian Schnabel, that should premiere in Venice, I assume. His movies are always good for a lone acting nom.. and this one has Oscar Isaac in it… Malkovich…

Brandon Skidmore

Patrick in CHALLENGERS may be kind of dirtbag - but I can fix him.

Jenny Maurer

I respectfully disagree with you on a strange way of life. It’s become one of my favorite 2023 films

Frank McCormick

I firmly believe Gladiator love is directly tied to heterosexuality, because I, too, think it is bad and don't know any gays who don't. Not only is Tom Hardy the villain of Star Trek: Nemesis, he plays a young (clone) Jean-Luc Picard!

J T

Aaron Taylor Johnson is my sexy dirtbag of the 2010s to present.

Dusty Meatballs

Interesting what you said that HITMAN on Netflix. I saw it in there and was underwhelmed. The first 2/3 of it was fun and interesting and then it went nowhere. A letdown. The other two people I was with, felt the same. Glen was good; better than the movie.

MJ

Chris, Emma Stone just appeared in Julio Torres’ new HBO show Fantasmas so I think she plans on being in more of his work soon. She also produced I Saw the TV Glow so I can’t wait to see how she might figure into a Schoenbrun project.

Lance Hunter

Just sending up a reminder that Sasquatch Sunset could very possibly end up with a craft nomination, maybe hair/makeup. (It's certainly a long shot, but I'm helping to build every piece of buzz possible so that it can be a potential future episode.) Also, with Saltburn, Challengers, and Kinds of Kindness all coming out within 12 months of each other; I'm starting to think that the "zoomers are killing sex in cinema" claims are vastly over-stated.

Emily Knox

You guys have saved me from my anxiety over the past few weeks. There were so many times I needed something that wasn't about politics. Thank you so much!

Kara Hogan

Re: Janet Planet, I saw it with a post-screening Q&A with Annie Baker, who in a very charming/self-deprecating way said she didn’t know what she was doing most of the time making the film, so I think Chris’ prediction that a masterpiece is incoming after she has a few more films under her belt is probably right!

Kara Hogan

Throwing down a few more undated titles in case these get announced for Venice or NYFF: - The Actor -directed by Duke Johnson, starring Andre Holland - filming wrapped last year - Anniversary - Diane Lane/Kyle Chandler family drama/thriller - The Dutchman - also starring Andre Holland, adaptation of a play - Echo Valley - Julianne Moore/Sydney Sweeney - Holland, Michigan - Mimi Cave with Nicole Kidman - Hot Milk - Fiona Shaw and Emma Mackey - The Order - just got announced for TIFF - The Brutalist - Felicity Jones/Adrien Brody directed by Brady Corbet

Marie

The concept of Here is so extremely my shit that I can’t help but hope it works (and if it does I will be its fierce defender) but yeah the track record is abysmal

Aditi Dubey

I'm hoping the year of Glen Powell will bring back discussion of the Potato Peel Pie movie, which is one of the first things I saw him in, and I remember fondly as a fixture of the earliest episodes of the show (it may have already, I'm not fully caught up)

Emily Sabo

The first time you know that I’m m

Feel like I have to let Joe know that he is not the only kind of non-plussed person by Janet Planet, def relate to the feeling I missed something about it, but chalked it up to seeing at the end of a Berlinale day. Went in excited but left me weirdly cold. Then again, I too am an oldest child 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

Carly

They filmed part of the Kerry Washington one in my home town (Bradford) so I’m all in!

Jonathan Storey

Bit late to this, but looking at the lineup for Venice this year, one of the awards they give out is called the "Glory to the FIlmmaker Award" (this year going to Claude Lelouch, but previously luminaries such as James Franco and Sylvester Stallone), and sponsored by Cartier. Maybe one for the THOB Superlatives in a few months' time?
