Honey I tell you what, we had a real good time with that episode but honey now it's your turn to talk!

Not Joe saying Nick Pizza-Pasta and the other two not noticing!

It’s so wild to me that while yes the 2012 best supporting actor race was so weird, the guy who won wasn’t even the best narrative/performance in the movie! That could have been Leo and McConaughey nominated. McConaughey wins which clears the decks for Leo to win for Wolf next year

I am 95% sure that Kevin was a year ahead of me in high school. That's a fun surprise.

Okay, re: the Best Supporting Actor category for 2012: I love DJANGO UNCHAINED and Waltz in it, and I balk at the commentary that he just won a second Oscar for his INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS performance...HOWEVER, I would've rather seen DiCaprio or, even better, Jackson nominated for that movie. I'd be fine with THREE actors from that cast in that category, though that'd be a little nuts. Nothing against Alan Arkin, but if I'm booting anyone, it's him.

Okay, long-time Austinite here who must give my own take on some of the Austin commentary. The first thing I'd note is that the "Keep Austin Weird" slogan is a bit like the "Don't Mess With Texas" slogan, in that they both kinda took off beyond their original purpose. "Don't Mess With Texas" came from an anti-littering campaign. "Keep Austin Weird" came from a campaign to have people buy local. (Like, if you find the original bumper stickers they say "Keep Austin Weird - Support Local Businesses".) Austin was in this odd position economically where the city wasn't really large enough to draw the attention of a lot of national chains, but it had the enormous University of Texas as well as the state government, so there was enough economic activity to support restaurants and retail and other things that wouldn't be able to survive in similarly-sized towns. So lots of cool local businesses sprung up to fill in the gap, and they were able to thrive because they didn't have to compete with big chains. Alas, that situation couldn't last forever, and the "Keep Austin Weird" campaign was really trying to keep that inertia going for as long as possible. (Oh yeah, and while Miss Congenitally was set in San Antonio, they filmed in Austin. I remember because I would walk past the place where they were filming every day going to my job on the UT campus.)

I just got to the part in the episode where Joe says he needs the whole cast of Hillbilly Elegy to hit the campaign trail apologizing for elevating JD Vance and A.) agreed, and B.) I’m sorry Glenn and Amy, but as an Ohioan I think the bare minimum punishment for anyone who made that movie is that I hope you never win an Oscar, sorry.

Tommy Lee Jones with hindsight was the correct choice for the winner, but I still love Django (sorry!) Also, another request for a discord to hurry along? I don't want to rejoin twitter, despite it being a rancid hellsite it does have great film users like Joe, Chris and Katey that I keep squizzing at

The last 15 minutes of this episode was transcendent. The only podcasts I listen to are movie/oscar stuff and bravo so I was LIVING for the discussion at the end. Also been very frustrated with the Top Chef judging style of late. If I had a million dollars I would give it all to y’all for the reality tv companion podcast.

It's SHOCKING to hear three gay men prefer a MALE performance over a female one and think it more nomination-worthy. Truly, I am ashamed. What next, Joe and Chris stanning male vocalists over any random girlie who belches out a single?! Also, it's funny that this must have been recorded JUUUUUUUUUST before Tenacious D blew up and Jack Black lost his Beloved Personality card.

Harry WS

i would absolutely listen to a podcast where you guys go deep on old school bravo shows, especially the many forgotten niche project runway riffs

Clare

Love this movie, and I love that non-actors were used alongside professional actors. I'm trying to think of other examples of this, anyone got any faves?

Sarah Lang

THOB podcast: Time for the IMDB game. Me (glancing at time stamp): HOW MANY GUESSES DID IT TAKE?

Kevin Breslin

Loved this episode especially the dive into the geography and demographics of the movie location. Always find it hard to comprehend that John Gooodman wasn’t pushed for best supporting actor in Argo instead of Arkin. Think he could have been a shoo-in for the win and we would think about that year in very different terms.

SO glad (?) someone else was also as fully scarred by that Whale makeup win presentation as I - no one talk about how bad that was!! Easily one of the worst/most egregious/offensive wins I can remember

Jessy Wheeler

I’m guessing a lot of people have either watched or looked up Drive Away Dolls since this was recorded, because it has replaced How to Build a Girl in Beanie Feldstein’s Known For.

Clairey

Hi I know this is a random thought and it's probably been said already but as a member of the millennial tote bag mafia if you guys did a tote bag I would buy it instantly! 💖

Carson Shofner

I can’t believe Margaret Bowman (Marjorie’s sister) wasn’t even mentioned! She was also the highlight of Hell or High Water as the waitress, and she’s in Waiting for Guffman, which you briefly mentioned

Michelle M

Now that Joe is on the Emmy beat also, I’d love more of a deep-dive into whether Emmy buzz/noms/wins have any impact on Oscar buzz - the Seyfried conversation made me think of it because she won the Emmy for The Dropout the year after the Mank nomination.

John Hawkes was originally a local Austin theater actor so this episode gave Texas a lot of love, which it doesn’t always deserve most of the time lately. McConaughey’s Oscar speech was so him it was hard to begrudge. But it still bugs me that he thanked himself-five-years-from-now several times but never thanked Linklater (who was sitting right there in the audience!) for like starting and then restarting his career. I can’t believe it’s his only nomination and I have to wonder if TRUE DETECTIVE hadn’t aired two months before if he’d have won for DBC.
