Joe doing a Borat impression while apologizing for the audio quality: "Im sorry about MY WIEEEEFi"

David Upton

“If there’s anyone out there that says they love this movie and can accurately tell us everything that happens in it, please make yourself known” THAT’S ME, THAT’S ME!! We had very few VHS movies when I was a teenager and this was one of them, so when I got my own tiny boxy TV, I watched this a LOT. Basically part of my induction into loving movies! Totally get the critiques, but it’s a nostalgia comfort watch, so was SO psyched to see this come up on the feed today.

Great episode! Similarly to the duo from Blank Check, have you guys ever thought bringing the folks from Fighting in the War Room into the Oscar Buzz dome? Would love to listen Matt, Dave and David's opinions on some fun movies!

Yessssssss POPULAR “Gwyneth” shout out! Mary Cherry 4 Ever

Great episode. I saw sliding doors shortly after it came out and I was very sold on it. As was my mum. But I had totally forgotten the plot. Miscarriages and death! I don’t remember any of it. Actually I remember Gwyneths English accent is good for a PR in London. So she has a pretty posh upper middle class Home Counties accent but there are London English dialect words and pronunciation dropped in there. Think Keira Knightly’s IRL accent. American actors often go too posh and sound like they’re in The Crown or Eliza Doolittle cockney.

Garnier Fructisse poster. !!!! ☠️☠️☠️☠️

Carly

For some reason out of all her 1998 movies it was Hush that I loved the most 😂

TheRealestXtina

Not me confusing this movie with Bounce for a minute and expecting a Ben Affleck appearance. So happy that one half of my other fave pod is the guest, been waiting for the return of Bobby for a long time!

A *59-second* plot description a few minutes after Joe Reid says, "I don't know that this movie had Oscar buzz?!" This episode's throwing knockout punches!

Steven Bertozzi

I loved this movie growing up - esp talking about its similarities to Next Stop Wonderland

Towards the end of this episode I thought to myself, "I wonder if they'd ever do a reverse IMDB game?" AND THEN CHRIS SUGGESTED THAT VERY THING!! I shouted "holy shit!" at my phone. And then I tried to use this newly discovered psychic connection with Chris to assist with the Imelda Staunton known for, a thing that definitely makes sense when listening to a podcast that was recorded days or weeks prior.

A Sliding Doors fan here. I watched this in the theater in 98, and we also had a VHS copy that was watched on repeat. I rewatched it within the last few years and it still gave me all of the '90s joy... though I do agree that the miscarriage at the end is heavy-hitting. It's one of those perfect Rom Com/Dramas of its age: highly rewatchable, 90 minutes, and easily digestible. It's a movie that doesn't expect to be anything other than what it is. And like the Jennifer Aniston Rom Coms of the same era, they are leading vehicles for these types of actresses but also not an acting stretch for them either. Perfect popcorn movies. I remember her accent was a big deal. The way she said "book" - people couldn't believe she did the accent so well. It just conjures up a certain time. I wanted Blond Gywneth's career life, start my own business, design my office, and take off whenever I wanted to go to the shops??!! The late 90s were a beacon of hope for me as a college student. This is what my life COULD BE!

... Also, I feel like this movie was a feeler for "Could John Hannah have a second phase career as a heartthrob/leading man??!" Would have loved to see that happen. He's great in this.

So…. Am I the only one who owns this soundtrack on CD on purpose? Also jt was a whole thing that she I think only wore Cavin Klein in the movie?

Chrissy

omg the #PoopGate discussion 😆. Who Weekly deserves the Pulitzer for their reporting on that

Hayley

Lovely to hear Bobby on THOB! Gwyneth in her pink dress is a cornerstone of my Oscar origin story. Also the episode audio really wasn’t bad!

John Ananias

There are SNL alums whose "Known For" doesn't need to include SNL - but Cheri Oteri's not one of them. That is, by the way, not remotely a knock, I love Cheri Oteri. Anyway, I was sitting here going, "She's in DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD, is THAT here?" so I guess it could've been worse?

Frank McCormick

Gwyneth Paltrow as Sharon Stone in that SNL sketch might legitimately her greatest performance. Besides the clapping for Gloria and "Isn't he creepy?" just the fact that she never leaves because she can't let anyone have the camera to themselves, even unto the end when the world is ending and she stays to get on the ground to scream into the dropped camera: *chef's kiss*.

A movie that Had a similiar consept before this movie was a movie by kieslowski named blind chance. Its more of a straight drama about hos much control we truly have over our lives.

I watched the movie roughly 1 million times in college so have very fond, nostalgic feelings for it. My best friend loves it, especially John Hannah and breaks out the ‘junior Prozac’ line in a terrible Scottish accent to this day. I definitely got the blond Gwyneth haircut.

Rob

Great episode - well done on working around the sound issues, because I could barely tell (except maybe during the 60-second plot description, and on that AMEN for Bobby sticking to the time! 🎉) This movie was clearly a bigger cultural deal over here in the U.K. - it was in the top ten highest grossing movies of the year, and the Aqua song was a number one single, so the video (with plentiful shots from the film) was constantly on heavy rotation on music channels. It’s a movie I have a real affection for, way beyond its actual merits.

Lance Hunter

They call it out in the episode, but the descriptor "two-shelf movie" is pure perfection.

Tales From a Costume Designer

This came out when I was in middle school and I immediately became fully obsessed with it and I honestly still rewatch it 2-3 times a year. Maybe I forgive it all its faults because of my intense nostalgia and the fact that I know every line by heart. I am one of those people who loves this film and can tell you everything that happens in it!!! From Gwyneth's blonde bob and insane accent to the hot Scotsman of my dreams, John Hannah. He introduced me to my love of the Scottish accent just a few years before Moulin Rouge! made me fully obsessed with Ewan McGregor. The one thing I will never be able to get past is WHY are these two women fighting over *THIS* guy????? There is nothing remotely good or redeeming about Gerry. What a horrid man. Having a podcast myself and knowing the tough chanelleges of editing and sound (the amount of late nights I have in Adobe Audition 🫠) I think you did a phenomenal job editing it to a place where I barely noticed any issues and then as the episode was ending, I thought to myself 'didn't Joe say he was having audio issues?' Great job 👏

Truth time: I'm sure I'm an outlier but I've never been a Notting Hill fan. I find Julia Roberts kinda boring in it?! It's never been pinnacle RomCom for me.

Charles

Sharper is very fun, but caveat that I saw it in a theater. Also the Presumed Innocent show is good and they are almost certainly going anthology with season 2 (no spoilers, but season 1 ENDS).

I would've been 6 when this came out so I must've been like 7 when my dad bought the VHS and gathered the whole family together to watch this for some reason. I remember way too many details having only seen it once over 20 years ago but for whatever reason my dad loaned the VHS to my grandfather immediately after we all watched it and for the next several years various people in my family (myself included) would ask to watch it and my dad would say that my grandfather still had the VHS. At some point he told us he lost the tape which was sad enough to be a talking point but not sad enough to just buy a second copy. My grandfather has now been dead over 10 years and the house he lived in is long sold and I have no idea if that tape was ever recovered or if anyone thought to look for it before the house was sold.

I love when either Joe or Chris get stuck on mainstream comedies. I'm stunned I nailed the cheri o Teri known for. Also the comedy central movie hall of fame is always fun to talk about.

Matthew Holsapple

Joe talking about "Popular" loving Gwyneth and all I can think of is Jennifer Love Hewitt's friends in "Can't Hardly Wait" saying "And you're totally Gwyneth."

Marie

Unironically would listen to a backwards IMDB game episode

Brady Thomas

Has anyone seen the musical "If/Then" that ran on Broadway with Idina Menzel? I ask because it's a musical that has the same premise, and it also sort of gets criticized for having a better premise than plot

Omeed

As far as romances that have won best picture, I think Everything Everywhere All at Once counts. It’s a secondary part of the movie, but laundry and taxes!
