You asked for it, you got it (Toyotaaaa, real ones know)! It's another Listeners' Choice episode and this time, you all selected Rian Johnson's whodunnit Knives Out! And naturally, we had to have our friend and whodunnit laureate Jorge Molina join us for the discussion! Topics include the film's bustling ensemble, 2019 screenplays, and Actors Who Are Knives Out vs. Actors Who Are White Lotus. AND Jorge brought a game!!

When it comes to JOKER's Costume Design nomination, perhaps I'd be less inclined to think, "Jeez, COSTUME DESIGN? Get it outta there," if Bob Ringwood and Lindy Hemming had been (close to being) nominated for BATMAN and THE DARK KNIGHT, respectively...because if we're talking costumes for movie Jokers, we gotta talk about those long before we talk JOKER.

My dream pitch for a Knives Out sequel has always been a British manor mystery a la Gosford Park, where the cast is all southern actors (Spacek, McConnaughey, Witherspoon, etc.) doing big goofy British accents

This is my favorite film of 2019, and I hope Johnson and Craig keep on making these beyond their third. Johnson crafts these just-about-immaculately constructed yarns that go down easy & breezy, and as a would-be writer, I both admire that AND am wildly jealous of it. As a big Marvel fan and a big James Bond fan, I loved what Chris Evans and Daniel Craig did as Captain America and 007, respectively, but it's great fun watching them play in this very different sandbox (Evans does like to play the heel). Listening to this, I especially nodded along to the praise for the score, because at the top of 2020, I kept wishing that would make it into more awards races.

I remember in the days before Twitter hit the shitter, I saw someone suggest when the Knives Out sequel was announced that they wanted Marion Cotillard to play Blanc’s ex, and that there should be a conceit for the movie that Blanc’s accent changed every movie and Cotillard’s was one movie behind Craig’s. We can’t do the accent thing, but I think the idea of Rachel Weisz entering this universe would check off every other box. I hope we’ve spoken that into existence.
