We've got a new kind of excursion for you this month! We all love those early morning Oscar nomination announcement presentations, so why not look back at an entire decade's worth? (Thank you, YouTube uploaders who keep these available-ish at our fingertips!) Topics include Joe's nerd lists, surprise reactions in the room, speed racer Mercedes Ruehl, and "selling mountain" vs. "selling toy."

I own The Nasty Girl on laserdisc. Good movie!

I loved this episode and honestly I miss the announcements the way they used to be. Admittedly I wasn’t watching them live but watching them all when I became knowledgeable was still a delight

Robert Anton

Look, I think we all know that if anyone deserved a nomination for Private Parts it would have been Paul Giamatti. Loved this episode.

Here's my thing, as someone who usually refers to the Oscars by the year of the ceremony: Referring to them by the year of the films, usually fine - but some have taken that ball and run with it to the point where they'll say, for example, "when Whoopi won her Oscar in 1990" or "Pacino finally wins his Oscar in 1992," and that's simply incorrect; the nominations and wins occur the year 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 the film in question, that's just when that happens. Plus, if someone looks up "1991 Oscars" on IMDb or Wiki, they won't find the list of winners that includes Jonathan Demme and Robert Richardson, they'll find the list of winners that includes Kathy Bates and Kevin Costner; I've listened to many a podcast where that kind of protracted confusion ensued and I was going, "No, you want the NEXT year!" I find it simpler to either say "the [year of the ceremony] Oscars" OR, better, "the Oscars FOR [film year]."

Also, how come Kathleen Turner hasn’t won an honorary Oscar? She should.

I love this topic! I still talk about the E! guy who in 1996 pitched an absolute fit that Box of Moonlight had been shut out. As if it had been winning precursors like Fargo or English Patient. Can't remember who it was but I don't think he was asked back.

“The Sweet Hereafter, a movie that is a stone cold bummer… [that] is very good.” - Joe Reid It is, and this probably says more about me than about the movie, but every few years I will hyper-fixate on it and throw it on multiple nights in a row, like an emotional steam bath to purge the toxins.

Nicholas Crouse

To me at least - it sounds like Kathleen says “very good” after they announce Laura Dern!

Just proves y’all can’t get too nookiest or cranniest in an Excursion. Loved this. I was a regular shmoe who got up early, heard the top five, and waited for the paper THE NEXT DAY to see the whole list. But also remember Joe Garagiola on the Today Show asking why they make these announcements “so darn early” in ‘91. The reporter stared blankly for a second. “So we can have it on our show.” Today I set a record for chanting “Baby Geniuses.” And remembered that JULIA AND JULIA (co-starring Sting) was a big deal “shot entirely on video” movie that got probably deserved hand waves. Little did we know.

The Great American Pop Culture Quiz Show ended for a number of reasons, but deep down, I think it was mainly because Dave Cole and Dan Cassino got tired of arguing with me about Oscar year designations.

Benji Black

I just look at it as by the standards of the academy defining things like Logan and Joker as adapted, Barbie is adapted. If you want to make an argument that needs to change that's an argument to have but that's the precedent they have set.

Re: Sarandon pronunciation. She got the last name from being married to Chris…so how does HE pronounce it? Have they both stopped correcting people, because I swear he does the emphasis on the “ran”?However now I doubt myself! Dig up that interview Chris.

Brandon Skidmore

Yall I forgot what Chris said is the name of the Gary league on movie fantasy draft

Jenny Maurer

If I may: the ice storm is technically a thanksgiving movie

JOE! As a football diehard I thought you would know that the NFL classifies the winner of the Super Bowl as the previous year’s champions. For example, the KC chiefs won the Super Bowl in 2024 but they are technically the 2023 Super Bowl champions. Whichever team wins the Super Bowl in February 2025 will be the 2024 world champs. But I’m not too surprised that a Buffalo fan is confused on how football champions are crowned… Zing!! 😂😂😂 JK! Love you both 😊

Kyle Simon

Where can I find the links to the announcements? (I’ve googled, but apparently not well…)

GirlDicta

I love the justification of covering this as if we don’t all want to hear Joe and Chris talk about the most obscure Oscar esoterica

I remember the ‘Ralph Fiennes’ pronunciation debate so vividly, my personal favorite moment being Mike Myers as Linda Richman in the long-running running SNL sketch ‘Coffee Talk’ getting ‘verklempt’ and advising the viewers to ‘talk amongst yourselves’ then suggesting the topic, “Ralph Fiennes’s name is neither Ralph nor Fiennes. Discuss.” 🤣

elizabeth Fitzgerald

My first year of college was the titanic nom year and I was also in the computer lab that morning checking out noms !
