You could say that all Exception episodes are time to take out the trash, but here we are with the Exception-iest of recent years, Ridley Scott's House of Gucci. We discuss our thoughts on Lady Gaga's performance, the "Stella Adler, Circle in the Square" promo cycle, the hype around the film's trailers, and the film's nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE

Molly Fromkin

“Slowly swallowed by the foreskin of a turtleneck” I laughed so hard I woke the cats up

Pella's Window

Hot take: the whole ski sequence of this movie is just a legasequel of Wham's "Last Christmas" music video.

My hottest House of Gucci take: Jack Huston's character is the secret hero of this movie. Technically the real person he was playing is apparently a straight man, but the character in the movie is very much played as the long-suffering gay underling rescuing this precious institution from the heterosexual foolishness that was on the verge of killing it.

A movie so cursed Jared Leto playing live action Wario is the best thing about it

Jenny Maurer

I really dug coda but I was hoping Jane campion would get some Oscar wins

Re: Best Makeup/Hairstyling nominees for this year, I must say...no, COMING 2 AMERICA is not a particularly good movie, but it wasn't nominated for Best Picture, it was nominated for Best Makeup/Hairstyling, and I'd say THAT was deserved. Speaking of another movie featuring Jared Leto of the House Gucci, SUICIDE SQUAD, let's bear the actual category in mind (though SUICIDE SQUAD shouldn't have won that, but now I digress).

I feel like nobody ever talks about how the choice to put Heart of Glass as the trailer song was so clearly paired because it’s another “H____ of G____”

To me, Pacino gives the genuinely 𝑏𝑒𝑠𝑡 performance among this scattered cast, I think he's quite good, but Gaga's is the 𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒆, which is to say that, for a picture that does not wrangle its tone and deal with its expanse particularly well, she walks in the scrambled worlds of it pretty successfully, sort of credible as this material goes but with that extra brio that you want to see. Leto...no; I can squint and turn my head to picture having a giddy time with what he's up to in this, but I sure did not actually have that good time and I felt a real "phew!" when he didn't get that Oscar nomination.

My third comment on this one, sorry about that, BUT I felt I had to chime in to say that both of Feil's late-in-the-game Salma Hayek movies were 2006 titles - 2006, the Oscar year of "and from Canada, WATER," lest we forget.

Chauncey Telese

I did crack up at them naming Robert Rodriguez movies and forgot the Faculty.

Stephanie Radcliffe

My favourite thing this movie inspired was Anne Hathaway on Colbert impersonating Gaga doing the "Father, Son and House of Gucci" bit. Perfection!

Juliana A

Chris' THE LAST FIVE YEARS joke was a personal attack 😂

Rachel Pepe

I still watch the Star is Born trailer at least once a year

Chrissy

Yassified Fredo!! 🤭

Hayley

“Through all the, you know, journalistic, investigative reporting that I did to prepare for this role”. - Gaga to Stephen Colbert on how she found out Patrizia’s family was connected to crime.

Emma ✨

Saved this for the Monday morning commute and cannot agree more on the impact that first trailer had on my brain. I remember feeling SO ALIVE and watching it at least three times then sending it to everyone I know

Riley

didn’t get mentioned in the supporting actor race discussion but I do have a theory that Mike Faist in West Side Story would’ve been an Oscar nominee if the season was just a bit longer, felt like he got momentum just a bit late.

Emily

I actually really liked Adam Driver in this (at least the earlier scenes)- but I think he is in a different movie than Gaga & Leto. He gets a bit lost by the end.

Bira Glass

Joker: Folie à deux *must* be a frontrunner for the THOB new year's 2025 ep.

Marie

Hijacking this commentary to say I would LOVEEE an episode on category fraud

Emily Sabo

Loved the episode! I remember seeing the promo shots for this—and thinking it was the happiest Adam Driver had ever looked and so I’ve always been curious about what his filming experience was like if it didn’t translate into the finished product.

Iconic trailers to me: the VICE trailer set to “The Man” by The Killers is pretty rad (ofc situation where trailer is way better than the movie). I saw GLASS ONION in a crowded theater and it was everyone’s first time seeing the PLANE trailer - the hoots and hollers when that title was revealed.
