This episode, we baked the pies and then we STAYED home. Where do you all land on the forgotten and ill-begotten Labor Day?

This film shows reitman works best With Diablo Cody even if Juno is a wonky debut by today’s standards

As a cishet man, we do not talk about Commando. Though it's kinda fun because it's just REALLY DUMB and not trying to be poignant like Stallone got obsessed with at the same time.

Mark C

Talking about potential ten timers, I believe Kidman has passed 10 and we haven't given her the honour of a quiz (unless I've missed something?)

Joel DeJong

Gotta hop in here to say Commando is maximalist Schwarzenegger fun. I've got a soft spot for it, especially after watching it with the We Hate Movies commentary. Big dumb action fun, in my opinion. - sincerely, a straight guy 😅

Movies That Made Us Gay

When I showed up opening day at the ArcLight Hollywood (RIP) paramount was giving out Pyrex pie cookware!

Bobby Scanlon Jr.

So randomly, I relistened to episode 53 “Random Hearts” this weekend. This tepid movie from ‘99 also stars Brooke Smith, putting her 6 timers count to 4 movies. The only two movies I could see that she’s also starred in are 94s “Vanya on 42nd Street” and 01s “The Man Who Wasn't There” from the Coens. Catherine Martin forever!

James Sykora

As a straight guy who loves action movies, we absolutely do talk about Commando, not with the reverence of the Terminators or Predator, but because it is so ridiculously over the top and stupid. It has some of Schwarzenegger's best kills and best post-kill quips. His character's name is "John Matrix!" I'd say the Schwarzeneggers we don't talk about from that era are Raw Deal and Red Heat because they're just kind of nothing.

John Ananias

I just want to say that, being as it's the one straight-up box office play in my roster, you've made me far more invested in the success of RED ONE than I should be.

Marie

Saturday Night innocent, pretty entertaining movie

Kevin Breslin

There at least 2 Friendlys on Long Island. Long live the brownie fudge sundae

John Ananias

(a) If we're casting Dan Hedaya in THE LORD OF THE RINGS, he's playing Gimli. (2) I will bypass the baffling notion that GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE is better than BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE and get to why I'm really here....ENOUGH SAID, BEFORE MIDNIGHT, FRANCES HA, these are outstanding pictures with outstanding female-lead performances (I watched FRANCES HA instead of a Presidential debate a few years ago, one of the best decisions I've made)...but as has been pointed out on previous episodes, THE HEAT is great and the ladies leading it are great in it and would have made for great/more fitting Actress in a Comedy/Musical (MIDNIGHT is the most Dramatic of the BEFOREs, for cryin' out Linklater!).

Lance Hunter

Here for the entirety one-sided Chris Feil/Finn Wolfhard beef.

As a former New Englander living in Cali a) Friendly's and Ninety-Nine are the restaurants I miss the most and b) Down With Applebee's

Molly Fromkin

Chris’s insistence on referring to Tobey Maguire as Homer Hickam makes me so happy

Frank McCormick

"The Labor Day of the Mind" HA! Also, am I the only one who either didn't know/forgot this movie came out, and assumed it was one of those "Mother's Day"/"Valentine's Day" anthology movie things? The whole Friendly's discussion segment warmed my cold, dead geriatric Millennial heart. There is one left in my area of southern New Jersey, but I haven't been to it in years. I really must go now; SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FRIENDLY'S! (BTW, I have a vague notion that Friendly's bankruptcy might have been a private equity thing, but I'm not sure.)

MJ

I’m not straight but people still talk about Commando. Alyssa Milano as his daughter, Predator costar Bill Duke in an awesome fight scene, Rae Dawn Chong… It’s a good time! And certainly on a tier w/ Conan.

Brady Thomas

Just chiming into say that I remember going to a Friendly's in Northern Virginia as a kid! I recall mostly being delighted in the color changing straws at the time

Stephanie Radcliffe

All I could think of when Chris and Joe were talking about the sensitive little gay-coded boy was "The kid from Marriage Story probably one day (he's obsessed with Halloween and loves his mother)."

Molly Fromkin

I grew up in various unFriendly southern states but we visited my mom’s family in the Boston suburbs every summer and I have the fondest memories of lunch at the Framingham Friendly’s with my nana. I still remember my last meal there, a grilled cheese and a Forbidden Chocolate cone. This is all to say that Joe is correct, a milkshake + icecream is FAR too much dairy for one meal, I have to imagine there would be disastrous gastrointestinal consequences even for people who aren’t super lactose sensitive!

Liesl

I intended to post that Dylan Minnette played Jack's son on Lost, but looked it up to verify and he played a metaphysical projection of Young Jack Shepard in the afterlife so Jack could let go of his daddy issues and move on, so Chris was right on the first try and my memory is a lie.

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

Friendly’s was a big part of my childhood here in the Boston area. There are still some, but not near me—there was a Hep A outbreak in several Friendly’s locations a few years back and the chain never quite recovered ☹️

Brianne Archer

I never saw Labor Day but my first real job was as a server at Friendly’s in Ohio. Shortly thereafter they closed all the stores in the greater cincinnati area, but not the dayton locations. so mine closed but i could get to one in about 30 minutes. Ice cream was a pain because servers had to scoop their own, we had no separate ice cream staff.

Aditi Dubey

My straight boomer Indian dad *loves* Commando. I've never seen the Conans or Predator or Terminator but I watched Commando half a dozen times with him as a child.

Matt

I live in St. Louis, and there are several Friendly’s that seem to have popped up in the area over the past few years.

TheRealestXtina

Thank you for extolling the virtues of Friendly’s. This is important work. I grew up on Cape Cod and we didn’t have a ton of chains, but we had Friendly’s and they raised me!

Jessy Wheeler

I miss Friendly’s, when I was a kid that was where we went for special occasions. There aren’t any near me anymore but there’s one left where my mom lives. Rest assured she is doing her best to keep it open with her undying love for the Fishamajig!

Seth

straight male Gary checking in: Commando is a second or third tier Schwarzenegger. Also I will think about Dan Hedaya as Saruman the rest of my life

Harry WS

starting the petition for 2025 may miniseries This Had Emmy Buzz: The Slap

Brandon Skidmore

I’ve never heard of Friendly’s but now I’m desperate to try one. I don’t think we have them in the South.

Laura

I love how when you were trying to describe Friendlies, all the references were so American as to be as inscrutable to me (New Zealander living in the U.K.) as Friendlies itself!

HelenB

Absolutely dying at Chris' various Dan Hedaya impressions. Also, can confirm, The Ringer's straight males do love Commando.

Emily Sabo

Loved the Friendly’s discourse! I grew up in Massachusetts and used to have so many that have closed—they do have that distinctive architecture that was then repurposed into a Verizon store. And Joe, I don’t know if you listened to the Andrew Garfield Modern Love podcast interview but he spoke so lovingly of Mike Nichols that I thought of you

Chris Sullivan

I am SHOCKED at the number of straight garys who came out of the woodwork after this episode. I honestly didn't think there was a straight man alive who listened to this podcast!

Brett Jones-melbourne

#7 in the top 10 movies on Netflix Canada. Your influence is strong up North.
