Did you celebrate Hitchcocktober? Well, regardless, we're talking about 2012's Hitchcock, the quasi biopic and behind-the-scenes look at the making of PSYCHO. Topics include previous nominations for Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren, whether or not the film's nominated makeup looks like the director, and our favorite Hitchcock films.

Oh man! The Hitchcock Universal Studios Thing was easily my favorite thing about visiting Universal Studios when I was a child. We did it once and then I made my mom take me through it again (while my dad and brother split off to go on some roller coaster).

Amy Patrick

I am famously older than the hosts and the Alfred Hitchcock experience and the movie make-up show were my two favorite parts of the old Universal.

Shadow of a Doubt: Hitchcock’s own favorite of his movies and a creepy masterpiece. Notorious is also great - Ingrid Bergman at her peak and Cary Grant doing Bond before Bond.

David Upton

The snaps I gave out when Chris said Notorious is his Hitch fave: loud and proud! That movie is just exquisite.

Amy Patrick

Unrelated to anything AND I truly hate to say it but Helen Mirren and Vin Diesel have amazing chemistry in their one scene in F9. I’ll show myself out.

Hearing Joe talk about Scarlett Johansson entering butt first made me wonder which films have the best 'with, and, butt' credits.

I was really interested in this one when it was about to come out, a fairly rare instance (way rarer NOW) of me being primed for a biopic pump (...or something), but the result was just on-the-nose and banal and...yeah, IMDb trivia page is a pretty good way to put it too. More importantly, to one Joe Reid, I must say that not only is the Hitchcock exploratory mission (which doesn't have to be a whole concentrated thing - I've seen 30-something Hitchcocks, and those were spread out over yeeeeeears, plus that's not close to complete), but...we start each Patreon podcast with a bit of Shirley, so perhaps THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (her feature debut and a dark delight, in my book) should be high on the to-watch list if you haven't seen - and hey, the "you" can be "the royal 'you'" to whomever. Also, TO CATCH A THIEF isn't near the top of the shelf, buuuuuut I had a good time and I do think that Grace Kelly's best performance in a Hitchcock is in that one.

I love an episode about a bad movie. Always a lot of fun, and it is inspiring me to watch some more Hitchcock soon.

Liesl

I would have listened to much more of Chris saying the lyrics to "All Star" in his Hitchcock voice!

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

I am choosing to believe that Selena Gomez was telling Taylor Swift about Meryl and Martin Short, and Taylor totally knows who they are—she gives off big try hard theater kid energy.

The Hobbit movies and Peter Jackson's career make so much more sense when you know that del Toro was supposed to do them, but then didn't, and the studio basically held Peter Jackson at gunpoint and made him do them. You can also see the studio's hand all over the "make the dwarves fuckable!" and "add a love interest!" and "add a visibly older Orlando Bloom as 'young' Leglolas!" And they kept wanting MORE, so it went from one, to two, to three movies from a book a fraction of the size of LotR. It was basically the worst time of Peter Jackson's life, and I think explains why he does dad docs now. Still and all, they really weren't as bad as some people like to say. There's a good single movie that could be edited from the three mediocre ones. It was also extravagantly gay: Ian McKellan, Lee Pace, Luke Evans were all queening it up down in NZ. (There are also rumors Lee Pace and one of the dwarves had an affair during filming, but I won't name who, because I don't think he's out, and it's just a rumor.)

2012 Hitchcock came out when I was almost an adult and even then I was like “is that it?!”

Elliott Sainsbury

Here to say Psycho II is worth a watch! Not perfect, but a great 'reformed villain' performance from Anthony Perkins and a demented return for Vera Miles, who is totally on one.

Carly

Picked up my library reservation for the book of 84 charring cross road! Your influence stretches across the pond

Sarah Lang

Trying not to jinx it for Joe, but Criterion has a fantastic NOTORIOUS dvd that would make a GREAT gift. Just saying!!

David Kirk

Chris knowing the lyrics to Smash mouths All Star made my day.

HelenB

I'm sorry, WHAT happens in The Shadowboxer??

Chas

I recently watched The Birds for the first time and the lesbian subtext/vibes between Annie and Melanie jumped right off the screen and slapped me across the face.

Josh Parham

Another 2012 movie I would have loved to see make the Makeup shortlist is Holy Motors. Also loved the idea of imagining THR roundtables with classic Hollywood actresses.

Emily Sabo

For me: 1. Shadow of a Doubt—saw it for the first time in the past few years 2. Rear Window 3. Rebecca 4. The Trouble With Harry 5. The Man Who Knew Too Much (Doris Day edition) I got to see a screening of the Lodger (one of his silents) with musical accompaniment and from the early days he definitely had an “it” factor

Brandon Skidmore

To the question of what director would you to to see make a biopic of another director: I would like a Melvin van Peeples biopic about the making of Sweet Sweetback’s Badass Song directed by Spike Lee
