We hope you are all taking care of yourselves! Did you have any other movie chain pre-roll memories we didn't discuss in this episode? Or is it all dominated by the Regal rollercoaster?

Alex B

I grew up in a Crown / Bow Tie Cinemas town and one of those used "Working My Way Back to You" by The Spinners for their chain pre-roll, and there seems to be no evidence left on the Internet of it, alas.

BB

My sister and I had so many plastic baseball caps from Ground Round.

Angela C Stalcup

Not The Ground Round!! We had the baseball hat/ice cream cup collection, too. That was good living as a kid. Joe, thanks for my first real smile since Wednesday.

My local cinema chain is called Celebration Cinema, and I'm grateful to have them! They renovate their theaters, but still install NEW ugly carpet! My childhood theater was Studio 28 (owned by Celebration) and at that theater we attended a screening of the movie Uncle Nino, starring one... JOE MANTEGNA!!! IT ALL CONNECTS, GANG!!!

Lowell Bartholomee

Baltimore was heavily General Cinemas so that’s my preroll, all the way back to the jazzy hi-hat/snare combo from the 70s.

Jenny Maurer

Sounds to Me like diner was the more mature nostalgia piece , frankly Although I’ll take yer word for it that the performances are good

Liesl

My mom and I rented Diner when I was a teenager out of sheer curiosity and because of the stacked cast. We did not make it very far into the movie before turning it off, as it was very much not our jam. I wonder if I would like or appreciate it now.

Liesl

My primary introduction to Joe Mantegna was when he played Amber Tamblyn's dad on Joan of Arcadia, very late to the party. His participation in that show may have paved the way for his current status on CBS procedurals.

Kevin Breslin

My town movie theater was United Artists until it was turned into a bank, but being in New York we were surrounded by multiple Loew’s that all became AMCs. So happy to get any discussion of “Forget Paris” one of my all-time favorite rom-coms. But how do you discuss Joe Montegna’s filmography and not mention “Baby’s Day Out” insane cinema

J Kyle Wilsor

I have VISCERAL memories of Young Sherlock Holmes!! Watched it again a few years ago. With a *very glossily* tempered perspective, it holds up! Now available on Pluto…

J Kyle Wilsor

ENVY!!! It literally is my cinematrix safe harbor. Rachel Weiss, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Amy Poehler, Christopher Walken… VA-POO-RIZE, friends!!

Joe - just announced this week, Ground Round is making a comeback (at least in Boston)

Kelly Kemp

Our local Ground Round had baskets of peanuts in the shell and you could throw the shells on the floor when you ate them. My dad absolutely loved taking business guys to lunch there. He was heartbroken when they replaced peanuts with popcorn.

Was anyone else’s introduction to Ben Foster the TV show Flash Forward lol. Aired on Disney Channel in the 90s and Ryan Gosling played his bully

Matthew

break the rules is early charli xcx, like I Love It with Icona Pop

Stephanie Radcliffe

The Eaton Centre, which is Toronto's big downtown mall, used to have a second-run movie theatre in the basement. The screens were so tiny and you could hear the subway running underneath, but they had $2 Tuesday movies and it was glorious.

BB

My sister and I were just reminiscing about our town’s (now closed) second run theater, The Elm. It was stand-alone and not in a mall. I saw so many mid-90s movies there. They had a pretty eclectic schedule, I saw everything from Beverly Hills Cop 3 to Whit Stillman’s Barcelona. My sister, memorably, saw Shadowlands there as a 10 year old?

Chauncey Telese

There's still a dollar theater in Palm Springs

Matthew Park

Liberty Hytes! Brooke Lynn’s daughter? Sister? Mother?

Chauncey Telese

Spheres biggest problem is they don't show the giant squid. Also man of the year was the what if Jon Stewart won the presidency/automated voting hack movie. Envy was black inventing Vapoorize and Stiller gets jealous. None of these are good. Also thank you for shouting out Fat Tony

Chauncey Telese

Did either of you see Ben Foster on Fast Forward? It was an early Disney Channel show.

If this a space where we can put in requests for excursions? Because, after the Up Close and Personal mention, I’ve realized that I have a desperate need for an episode where you discuss/breakdown all of Diane Warren’s Oscar nominations (and their award show performances if I’m really dreaming big)

Rachel Pepe

Diner was one of my dad’s favorite movies - so I’ll always love it. Also, if there any STL Garys out there, we all know that Wehrenberg Theaters had thee most epic intro theme song

Grace Wire

I have a general question for the garys. Am I high or did IMDB get rid of the ‘known for’ feature on its site? Has anyone else noticed anything????

If anybody is looking to watch Forget Paris, another plus for your local library is it is currently streaming for free on Kanopy, and there’s a really good chance that your library card will give you access to a Kanopy account!

Jason Feffer

This and Monday’s Blank Check Patreon both had tangents about Forget Paris and The Humbling. What’s in the water?

Every year I go to a 30-hour Sci Fi marathon that runs the gamut in what they show: old, new, good, bad, all over the place. Needless to say when the movie is not very good it’s understood that people will shout clever things at the screen MST3k style (for example, in X-Men: First Class when Magneto kills Kevin Bacon with a German coin someone shouted “That’ll leave a Mark.”) Anyway, one year they showed Sphere pretty late into the night when the whole theater was already exhausted. When Dustin Hoffman is going on for maybe the 3rd time about how humans just weren’t worthy of the great gift of the Sphere, someone in the back the the theater (in lieu of being creative) just shouted “Oh. My. God. Dustin Hoffman. No one cares!” This is my strongest Sphere memory. Thank you for reading.

I am a try hard. Saw Rain Man not that long ago. It’s terrible in its treatment of Autism but Tom Cruise is amazing. A glib yuppie barely holding it together.

Seth

Wag the Dog I remembered vaguely from when I first saw it and remembered it being a little off, and I rewatched it and while it’s very funny and well built and all the performances are great, it has this sourness that’s a little hard to stomach, for which I blame Mamet. It plays one very bad thing very casually and for laughs in a way that throws off the whole movie for me. Envy isn’t great but it’s reasonably fun. I have absolutely played it in Cinematrix, for a single-digit % score.

I saw Man of the Year in theaters. I distinctly remember that Robin Williams dances with Laura Linney to KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” And Jeff Goldblum menaces Laura Linney by saying “Don’t f*ck with our democracy!” while mid-2000s Depeche Mode is playing.
