It's that time of year again! We are putting out the call to determine the Garys' picks for best films of the year! In the Google doc linked to this post, submit your votes for your ten best films of the year in ranked order -- so, your best film of 2024 is your FIRST choice, your #2 film of 2024 is your SECOND choice, etc. As previously mentioned, we are allowing the ballot to stay open through MLK weekend, so that Garys can catch the films that expand into more theatres over that weekend. This ballot will be open until NOON EST on TUE JAN 21.

The top ten vote earners will then be on a final ballot (to be posted WED JAN 22), and then all you Garys will vote for the winner on a preferential ballot, just like the Academy! The results will then be announced on February's SUPERLATIVES Excursion episode! For now, submit your picks and advocate for your favs in the comments!

I’ll likely be switching around my 5-7 right until the deadline. As of now: 5. Kneecap 6. A Different Man 7. Between the Temples Also it’s been a strange and awful year so I’ve decided to not feel guilty for ranking Saturday Night number 4. The “theatre kids but they’re way nicer than theatre kids are in real life and also it’s television and the 70’s” nonsense stole my heart. But also I fully forgot until two minutes ago that I might be able to see All We Imagine as Light and a little film called The Brutalist before the 21st so that would require more rethinking as well.

Still need to watch more but All We Imagine as Light and The Seed of the Sacred Fig haven’t left my mind since I saw them.

FYC: M Night Shyamalan’s Trap. Trap, in other words, is as much about the difficulties of staying present in the moment as it is about being a serial killer on the lam and that, actually is a twist worth savoring -Alison Wilmore One of The Best Films of 2024 The Ringer The Atlantic Critically Acclaimed Network

Shoot, I forgot His Three Daughters counts as a 2024 (Letterboxd filter be damned!). Hopefully it doesn't fall one vote short of making the second round!
