This is the episode. This month's exception is David Lynch's tribute to Los Angeles, Mulholland Drive! Topics include Naomi Watts nearly cracking the 2001 Best Actress lineup, how the film's fans interpret or "unlock" the film, and how Lynch's films are surprisingly consistent (if modestly so) at receiving Oscar nominations.

I am not a Lynch person at all so I thought i was free of it after 4 months on Blank Check. But I always love you two so this will end it better than the month of TwinPeaksReturn, lol

With regards to the pilot version (which is pretty widely available at this point, pretty sure I watched it through the internet archive within the last six months or so and I know I've seen it on youtube intermittently as well,) one of the hooks was going to be that Adam wound up living in the same apartment complex as Betty and Rita so you can imagine the complications arising out of that going forward. Also worth noting that the Lee Grant scene wasn't in the pilot version but seems to have been shot at the same time so I'm guessing it might have been used in later episodes. Ditto for the Patrick Fischler scene.

My two favorite lynch projects are probably the first season of twinPeaks and the elephant man?

The gayest thing I've done this year so far? Audibly gasping in my kitchen when Joe said he hadn't seen "Talk to Her."

I agree about needing to draw the line somewhere re: the 1st half being a dream, esp. when the narrative kicks off with a head hitting a pillow. It just feels like Lynch’s intent, even if the ambiguity would be interesting in its own right.

I have always been under the impression that “lone director” referred to the movie’s actual only nomination at all…how is it “lone” if a movie got other nominations and even wins? What even are the rules around here?? 😆

Forbidden Zone has really cool production design and music but is transgressive in a way that does not hold up from a modern perspective (lots of blackface and pretty transphobic as I recall)

Chris isn’t wrong that Tsai Ming-liang movies are very vibey, but more so than most of them What Time is it There? is actually fairly plotty. Lee Kang-shang plays a watch salesman who’s dad has just died and whose mom isn’t coping well. He then meet a woman who’s going to Paris and sells her his favorite watch. He then becomes pathologically obsessed with setting all the clocks he can find to Paris time as a way to feel closer to her. Which of course makes selling his watches harder. It’s very much a comedy and a lot of the movie is elaborate Keatonesque visual gags.

How could you forget 2001 (!!)’s Down/The Shaft where Naomi faces off against a killer elevator?! A hilariously fun watch!

Shrek is a good movie you haters!

Listening to this episode and hearing you talk about LA while the fires are going on was difficult. Sending my deepest sympathies to anyone affected right now.
