IT'S HERE!! Sound of on your thoughts on what films fall in which categories, films you'll be most excited for future episodes, and any films that missed a mention on the episode!

Love these annual episodes! ❤️ Can we talk for a second about the disappointing lack of interaction between Rachel and Bowen and the gathered audience at the nominations announcement? Were they given rules to not react? Because the complete absence of applause for nominees or any kind of publicist gay gasping really was a total buzzkill. This is why the Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams year will forever be my favourite. The Riseborough gasps! The year of dicks! The ostrich! The no comment! (Not to mention Allison’s pronunciations!)

Justice for "Insert Film Title Here"

I just realized I forgot about a ton of movies that I really loved that I should have put on my Superlatives list (I guess it pays to revisit my Letterboxd before voting, lol), like My Old Ass and Woman of the Hour. Boo :(

Tami Hillberry

Chris! I paused the episode to come thank you for your Nightbitch comments. I'm a (reluctantly suburban) single mom of a 2 year old, and I couldn't agree with you more! We WANT to go to the movies, and even though Nightbitch wasn't perfect, I found myself sobbing seeing such an honest and relatable experience of motherhood on the screen. I am fully aware that this maybe wasn't "for" other people, but I'm also crushed that women who are less plugged in to the movie scene won't see it just due to lack of awareness/promotion. Anyway, just wanted to say you were not condescending at all, and it made me tear up hearing your super respectful take on other demos and movie representation.

Chris, I hope you and yours have an upswing soon. You and Joe and the show are super important to me and have gotten me through some tough times. Sorry to hear you’re having your own now. Sending good vibes! Take care and don’t fret about the schedule. We’ll be here to listen to whatever you put out.

Chas

I was living, laughing, loving Chris’ takedown of We Live In Time. A truly awful schmaltzy mess, with pro-life overtones tbh. Im also going to be using “miserableist” in every conversation about this movie that I can.

Molly McNeeley

Now that I have to stop avoiding Nosferatu if I’m going to watch all the Oscar nominees, I wonder if I could ask my fellow Garys for your input about it? I’ve got a low tolerance for horror films, and I guess I’m wondering just how horror-y it is. Like, I’m fine with horror-adjacent movies that feel more like action/drama/thriller, but slasher films and such are a hard no. I’m just trying to gather info about what to expect so I can decide whether to use my Regal Unlimited pass or pony up $20 to stream it on a TV with the lights on.

Sam Hetherington

I saw Nightbitch at a local festival with low expectations and I was baffled by the reception it got through the season. My audience ate it up and every parent I know who’s seen it loved it. I think if you meet the movie where it’s at, you’ll have a great time. I hate the tone I’ve seen repeated in reviews that it’s “just another movie about how being a mother is hard”. Well guess what, Mimi, being a new parent IS hard. I think it takes familiar themes and puts them with characters who constantly surprise in small ways. It’s also very funny. I think it’s ripe for re-evaluation. Honestly it could have been a word of mouth hit if people actually had the chance to see it

Nina

Looking forward to the Babygirl episode and hearing you gush over Harris Dickinson

Jenny Maurer

I did want Natasha lyonne to get some nomination love too

Braden Poapst

Also speaking of Ms. Folie a Deux herself, happy LG7 aka Mayhem reveal day to all who celebrate.

Jenny Maurer

Also also: Pamela Anderson is pretty post left red pilled so I’m not fully comfortable with her being wholly reclaimed

Amy Patrick

I want to second Chris’s recommendation of Dahomey. It is interesting as both film experiment and documentary. It is very much worth your time.

Gordon

Speaking to categories we went 5/5 in, I managed to get Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Animated Feature, International Feature, and Production Design, which I feel pretty good about all things considered (even if Animated and Production Design were pretty easy to get right)

J Kyle Wilsor

Just sending love to Chris! I’m sorry it’s been a rough time for you. I hope you’re prioritizing yourself, and selfishly, I hope that the podcast is a way of doing that, but if it’s not…just be good to you. 💜

Clint

wait, speaking of tiff 2023…what happened to kristin scott thomas’s directorial debut north star, starring scarjo and sienna miller?

Riley

Sought out both Dahomey and On Becoming A Guinea Fowl in part because of how much you two advocated for those - completely adored both. The former is definitely in my 2024 top ten, and the latter will certainly be a big contender for me in 2025. Bless local film festivals and special screenings for allowing me to see them!!

Keegon

Kathy Bates getting into Supporting Actress for Richard Jewell was the first nomination announced the year of the Jlo snub. That's my go-to chaos announcement and probably the one y'all were pushing out of your memories.

Alex B

There were a lot of movies brought up so my bad if I just missed it, but Hit Man deserves a mention I think. Oscar hopes died with the Netflix acquisition, but shoutout to Glen at least making a Globe nom

Stuart K

Love the housekeeping note on y'all keeping better track of your bets. Idk if this is a thing you care about but as someone who uses your festival episodes as 'must watch' lists here are all previous films that were mentioned by either of you (for good or bad reasons) from a past festival that are still not out. 2023 Sundance Magazine Dreams (coming in March) A Little Prayer (sources say it came out but I beg to differ) Fairyland (no release date) 2023 TiFF Gonzo Girl (no release date) 2024 Sundance Love Me (coming this week) Ponyboi (no release date) Freaky Tales (coming in April) 2024 TiFF The Life of Chuck (coming in May) Eden (no release date) The Friend (coming in March) On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (coming in March) I'm Still Here (coming in February) Misericordia (coming in March) The Penguin Lessons (coming in March) Patreon Awards Race Check-in Dated 7/19/24 Ella McCay (no release date) Mother Mary (no release date) Without Blood (no release date)

Barbara Anderson

I just figured they stopped doing best song performances because nothing this year could compete with “I’m just Ken”.

Eurocheese

Thank you both for another amazing year and bringing us all a little joy every week. :)

Hayden Claborn

It was actually based on your guys recommendation I went to go see The Fire Inside in late December and really enjoyed it. I also respectfully disagree that Joker 2 is better than the original. I honestly think the negative reviews of Folie à Deux are too kind. The film supremely lacks ambition and it's "interesting ideas" aren't really that compelling, at least to me. And this is coming from someone who called 2019's Joker the worst movie of that year.

WerqShop

"Kandy Muse coded"

Riley

also this was briefly mentioned but I think Challengers is another great example of the “resume building” type of narrative. It definitely helped build Luca’s reputation, alongside Queer. I also think it was a big step forward for Zendaya in terms of her star power in that movie and also her role as a producer! And I think it could be a big stepping stone for both the boys!

Martin Schneider

Am I the only one who finds the omission of The Order here baffling. I might have nominated Hoult in that and it's in my Top 5 for the year.....

Marie

don't mind me as I lost my mind at the realization that the bikeriders came out in JUNE 2024?!?!?!?

George Wishart

I have zero idea wtf Bleecker Street was doing with their HARD FEELINGS campaign. I’m a DGA member and get invited to a ton of FYC screenings. I get a bunch of digital screener links. I didn’t get a single thing about HARD FEELINGS. No screening invites, no links, nothing. I live in NYC and make a point to see as many awards movies actually in theaters. I was looking for HARD FEELINGS showtimes since November, assuming there’s gotta be some qualifying run. I didn’t see any sort of release until Jan 10th, past the voting cutoff date for DGA nominations. I don’t blame the voters for not nominating anyone from that film. I blame Bleecker Street for their, IMO, lackadaisical campaign.

Hayley

Don’t worry about the schedule, we will be here regardless. Take care and we love you, Gary 🤍

Elliott Sainsbury

The Garys love you, Chris! You guys are the hardest-working podcasters with so many episodes and bonuses. The Movieline ep was one of the best ever. Hoping you're finding time for yourself among the awfulness of 2025 so far. Want to shout out Thelma as deserving of Best Picture, not just the June Squibb of it all! If you haven't seen it because you think it's going to be a "Nobody"-style throwaway comedy, it's so smart, touching and beautifully shot and directed. And a beautiful post-credits scene! Also needed more talk about The Room Next Door! In my top 5 Almodovar, one of Tilda's best performances and deserves noms for editing (so thrilling toward the end), costume (though that branch as we know doesn't go for contemporary) and either Swinton or Moore. Throwing out Drive-Away Dolls as a long-lead buzzed movie and, dare I say, The Pool Man before anyone actually saw it? Dying for a The Deliverance ep on Halloween, if only for the Glenn Close sound drop and prosthetics convo. Before anyone saw the movie, the news of Mo'Nique and Lee Daniels reuniting definitely ignited some buzz.

Emily Sabo

Sending love your way Chris and Joe! Your podcast is a bright spot. I’m interested in a discussion of Blitz, which definitely seemed to entirely disappear.

Rachael Sevilla

I love the podcast, but I must express some disappointment with your lack of discussion about Lesley Manville getting the "and" AND the "with" credit ("and with Lesley Manville") in QUEER. THOB is my #1 place for hearing about credit decisions. I guess I will just have to wait for its episode? At least Jason Schwartzman's performance was mentioned - as were all 4 of the wildly different movies he was in for 2024...

Kara Hogan

My favorite stat of the 2024 season that I love telling people is that The Substance made more at the U.S. box office than Saturday Night! Which, if you’d told me that in May 2024, I would not have believed.

Kara Hogan

Re: Mothers Instinct, I was in London in early July and there was a huge poster for this film in the tube station by my hotel, and I kept having to explain to my non-Oscar/film appreciator sister that this was like a white whale for me of wanting to see because it had been released everywhere but the U.S.

Gordon

I don't know how much actual *buzz* it had but considering it showed up on that shortlist out of nowhere I think there's potential for some kind of episode down the line on WALTZING WITH BRANDO (if there's ever a way to watch it, that is)

Annaliese

chris giving the last showgirl the lashing it so richly deserves made me so happy, he’s truly one of the best doing it right now

Jesse

Everything is wrong about Back to Black except Marisa Abela’s performance—there were moments I was convinced I was watching a much better film just bc of her

Mac

Love hearing you guys talk movies when you take the gloves off! Thanks for another year!

Harriet Ware

Teared up at the end 😢 Sending love to Chris and thank you both for bringing joy to Mondays and making it look effortless!

Traci

Thank you for an amazing episode! Sending good thoughts to Chris ✨✨✨

Molly Fromkin

I feel like such a dumb bitch this year because I hate most of the front-runners (not That One though! There are dozens of us!) and I LOVED Mother’s Instinct! Watched it back to back with Eileen. The Anne Hathaway Wears Amazing Midcentury Fits and Acts Bonkers double bill. The way I was ready to go buy a pack of cigarettes after that…

Brit

Thank you for everything you both do!! Take care of yourself Chris!! ❤️❤️❤️

Priyanka

feel very seen w chris’s read of didi. so over “sons realizing the women in their lives may happen to be real people with feelings” as a story. joan chen though!

German Munoz

Chris, so sorry to hear it's been a tough time for you. The last year and a half has been the most challenging of my life, so I can relate! Hang in there. Glad you're setting some boundaries and prioritising your wellbeing. Thanks for sharing this you guys, I know it can be daunting. But we don't care about the schedule! We care about YOU TWO! 💖 Sincerely, A Gary

Michelle M

Kneecap seems right up your alley Joe, would love to hear what you think after you see it.

Leeya

Loved this episode and love listening to you two. Thank you for all the fabulous content this year, despite everything terrible going on globally and personally. You’re a bright light!!

Clint

chris, totally deadpan: “firebrand, a movie about jude law having a gross leg…i liked it.” 🤭

Carly

Joining the chorus to say your well-being comes first - the schedule can wait. You’ve given me so much joy during crappy times x

Brandon Skidmore

Is there a world where Sebastian Stan ends up being the surprise winner? Now that he is no longer competing against himself with 2 movies could all of his support just move to The Apprentice and he walks away with the win? Or do you think the DJT of it all will keep people from voting for it?

Faith Hicks

Just finished this one, thank you so much for this wonderful podcast! Chris, very sorry to hear life has been so difficult, take care of yourself. Joe, delighted to hear you pronounce Blusky the same way I do. Thanks again for this space that feels bright and hopeful during dark times. <3
