Turbulent Brilliance excursions are all about the ephemera, and this month we're talking about a beloved pit stop in awards season: the "and I'm an actor" mini-speeches that open every SAG Awards ceremony. We look back at all the best and worst examples, memorable bits, and ones that warm our hearts. We're This Had Oscar Buzz and we're a podcast!

Honestly i thought I got my money’s worth from the Phantom episode alone but damn do I love this episode. Every time I think something is too niche and no one else will give a damn, I am pleasantly surprised!

Frank McCormick

Perhaps the most deranged Excursion idea yet. Very THOB, though! Can't wait to listen.

Did M. Night Shyamalan decide to film Trap in Hamilton, Ontario because Eugene Levy called it the Pittsburgh of Canada…?

Does anyone else get teary during the I’m An Actor montages? I find most of them very moving. Also, I like how Jodie Foster referred to her real first name during that first audition. We forget many actors have stage names!

Chas

I too need a good Scientology expose to obsess over for a week instead of *gestures everywhere*

Gordon

Joe accidentally saying “Avatar” instead of “Aviator” now has me desperately wanting an Alan Alda Na’vi performance

Wasn't Harrison Ford eating while Jessica Williams was giving her "I'm an actor" speech? Either way, it was a very funny moment. An amusing Halle Berry story: my husband and I competed years ago at a trivia night, and the event came down to a tiebreaker between our team and another one with the tiebreaker question of what movie Halle had won her Oscar for. We watch the Oscars every year and knew the answer immediately. Someone on the other team loudly proclaimed "Better get another one!" in complete confidence that they had the correct answer upon turning it in. Their response was Swordfish and we won.

Laguardia and Performing Arts are now one school! (i am a grad of nyc performing arts school and must flex!)

(Stares out window longingly) when will Steve Coogan be in a coen brothers or Paul Thomas Anderson film ?

I...was fine with JLC's little "nepop baby" pseudo-dig aside; Bridges' nod to nepotism was more endearing, but I have found the whole "nepo baby" discourse such an aggravating non-issue-being-treated-as-though-it's-a-Major-Societal-Problem that I really like seeing someone like a JLC toss out a little cutesy dig kind-of-whenever.

Dusty Meatballs

Very fun episode. Next time more clips is my only suggestion

Kara Hogan

I went to Fordham LC (which is near AMDA) and SCAM-DA was a big recurring topic throughout my four years - I believe they’re not accredited, so you don’t get a degree like you would from like Pace or Marymount Manhattan

Kara Hogan

ALSO I’ve been saying FOR YEARS that Halle Berry should pivot to a Nicole Kidman prestige TV angle and do a Big Little Lies-esque mini series - the market’s a bit over saturated now but it feels like that would be great.

Amy Patrick

I learned SCAMDA from the Queen Nicole Byer. She constantly shades them AND talks about how they have begged her for money and to use her as an alumni on materials and she refuses.

Brandon Skidmore

I’ve never understood the Nepo Baby outrage. I work for the same company my dad works for. He helped me get a job there but I have climbed the ranks in the company based on my own hard work and experience. I think the same is true for a lot of people and a lot of industries. That old saying “It’s not what you know it’s who you know” and all that.

German Munoz

Loved this! What a fun idea for an excursion. I got totally obsessed with these after the Jamie Lee Curtis one (I thought it was funny and charming! 🙈 Haha). Congrats on knowing exactly what your Patrons are likely to obsess over too! 😁

Elliott Sainsbury

This kind of minutiae is why I love this pod!! Would love more of the same, and jonesing for another watch-along like The Eyes of Laura Mars ep. I genuinely screamed out like Tashi Donaldson when I got Movie 43 correct for Halle's filmography.

Carrie Williams

If it’s not Parker Posey in 2025 my Party Girl heart will will break

Gosia

Loved this episode! You mentioned suggestions on future topics and I always wonder about actors having ‘with’ or ‘and’ credits

Clara Bush

Loved this ep, but would love to hear more of the clips/know where to find them so I can rewatch alongside you!

Joy Novak

Catching up on this very late, but I really do enjoy this deep dives on aspects of awards shows.

Also, right before Joe suggested pairs, my immediate dream intros were Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons - but I think they can do it without it being a bit. Unless looking adoringly at each other while the other goes is a bit.
