Now's your time, Tori Amos Garys!

Comments

To quote one diva for another, it’s me, hi! I’m the problem, I’m a Tori Gary, it’s me

Thales

Between Interview with the vampire (I was way too young when I watched that in theaters) and Great Expectations (that soundtrack! There's a Poe song!), this podcast really became a homage to my teenage years in the 90's. Thank you, guys!

Jenny Maurer

I know joe hated bring her back but sally Hawkins kinda had mrs havensham energies?

JPB Gerald

The worst movie is Music

Robin Hitchcock

I liked the fictional visual artist's work in Exhibiting Forgiveness, which was made by the director Titus Kaphar I believe.

David Kirk

I am a English Gary, well into my Victorian literature. The 1947 David Lean version is one of my favourite movies. Lean’s adaptation is done as gothic horror. The teen Estella played by Jean Simmons is brilliant and Martitia Hunt as Miss Haversham is for me definitive.

Ooh, Feil has a Bening in the back pocket! (That is also kind of an Elizabeth Holmes? I've only heard impressions of Elizabeth Holmes, but it sounded similar to me.) Nice MARS ATTACKS! shout, too, I LOVE Bening in that - if I were to try for a Bening, I'd go for "I liked him!" or some other bllissed-out delivery from her in that.

Michael

A Little Princes is soo good. I loooove it

If we're doing a rundown of Anne Bancroft in the '90s, attention must be paid to her guest appearance on THE SIMPSONS, as Dr. Zweig in the bananas-great episode "Fear of Flying" (which also has that scene with most of the CHEERS cast, and RIP the great George Wendt). David Mirkin, showrunner at that time, loved her - of course - and later cast her in HEARTBREAKERS. He also loved to mention how Mel Brooks showed up with her at the recording and she quipped, "I can't get rid of him!"

John Ananias

Millennial who loves HERCULES (if not as much as a few others of that Disney era) here: "Go the Distance" is a fine and upstanding "I want" song, but if you nominate one from that collection of songs, it should be "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)," which is just a delight and marvelously carried by Susan Egan.

Clint

“i’m sure [miss havisham] has an old gay friend down in the gulf who’s like ‘actually, work’” lolol

Braden Poapst

The “what a dump” Bette Davis line reading is from 1949’s “Beyond the Forest”. Which of course reminds me of that time a contestant on Drag Race got harshly critiqued for not understanding the reference to this/its use in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf that Michelle Visage was trying to get them to emulate for a shitty acting challenge.

Clint

would love to visit bancroft island to see the house where she and sissy spacek did rehearsals for 'night, mother

Frank McCormick

Nothing is more 90s than that theme song. You listen to it long enough, bang-tendrils start growing on your head.

Clint

i feel like the irishman has to also be one of netflix’s most expensive awards campaigns. the teaser tv spot during the oscars a year ahead and the insanely elaborate nyc subway ads always stayed with me… plus, wrangling scorsese/de niro/pacino/keitel must have been…not cheap.

Rob

It’s hard out here for a Pip, on Bancroft Island…

Emily

I listened to this soundtrack nonstop in high school (and I still have the CD!). Also - is it just me or are the early episodes disappearing into space? Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil was referenced but I can’t find the episode.

That picture of Ethan Hawke with blond hair and dark roots from his Wikipedia page will indeed haunt my dreams. He looks like Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray there!

Harriet Ware

Cooling and Honey are the best Tori B-sides

Joy Novak

Im an "elder millenial" born in 1981. And, I love Hercules - because it really does have the best music. Go the Distance is probably the weakest of all the songs. I Won't Say I'm in Love is one of the best Disney songs of all.

Joy Novak

I loved great expectations when it came out when I was in HS. I was an English nerd, but didn't really like Dickens so appreciated the changes. Ethan Hawke was my main boy celebrity crush at that time, the soundtrack rocked, and I actually really loved the art. I haven't rewatched it since the early 2000s, so I have no idea how I'd like it now.

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

Thank you Joe for turning me on to Merman! What a great song! Currently listening to a playlist of Tori Amos b sides.

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

Also Mitchell Beaupre is a Heartbreakers apologist and tried to play it on the Hackman episode of Screen Drafts.

Ethan Hawke feels like he's overdue for an Oscar at this point but he just hadn't gotten the right role. I'm really hopeful for Blue Moon but that Berlin win for Andrew Scott makes me worried.
