For this month's excursion, we're recapping another awards show and for the first time, it's an Oscar ceremony! But it's not just any Oscar ceremony, it's the notorious one produced by Allan Carr for the films of 1988. Topics include the much maligned opening number starring Snow White and Rob Lowe, the somehow even worse "I Wanna Be An Oscar Winner" number, Billy Crystal's bit that helped him land his first hosting gig, all the winners and presenters, and everything else in between!

I had no idea the oscar winner thing was separate from the snow white thing

JPB Gerald

I guess I was getting confused because of Rob Lowe

The Reading Bee

I wonder how long it’s going to take me to get through this episode. I get such second hand embarrassment and I’ve had to pause 3 times before the 55 minute mark.

JPB Gerald

Lol i cannot believe the Oppenheimer of the game

Jenny Maurer

Honestly I wish someone took allan carr to a pet shop boys concert and a 1988-1989 rave for Oscar opening ceremony inspiration

I recently-ish had cause to send a clip of the "Snow White"-Rob Lowe number - might've been the whole opening stretch, but I had just been talking about the Lowe-Snow moment - to a friend who'd had no awareness of it. I expected a kind of "WHAT happened THERE?" reaction, but he wasn't too fazed by it; either the iimpact of it has dimmed over time or he was being kind. Like a lot of things, this Oscars is a bit overly catastrophized - but that opening IS awful. It's a crazy-go-nuts mishmash fever dream I am glad exists, but...ooh boy.

Just flagging that Chad Lowe won an Emmy for "Life Goes On."

Catch me being knocked back in my seat as I watch li'l Jodie Foster singing at the Oscars for '73 - and a couple hours before she wins (I didn't even recognize the song at first, I find the Disney ROBIN HOOD such a snooze)! (Did it bug me that the years appearing during those clips were for the FILMS and not the ceremonies? Yep! Because, for example, "Love" was nominated and then performed *IN 1974*, that's how the calendar works and that's just the fact of it, but...ah well.)

About a year ago the podcast Double Threat did a fantaaaastic interview with Eileen “Snow White” Bowman. She’s got some great stories about what it was like being in the middle of this fiasco…also sounds like she’s kept a healthy, funny perspective on the whole thing. Well worth a listen.

Coral Browne! Not Cordell! And you said it twice. She was Vera Charles, for the love of Pete! Ugh, you young gays…🙄

Another game where I had alot of back pockets lol

Okay, one more from me: I first knew of Allan Carr as a producer of GREASE and that's still what I'll remember him for most (even with decades of Oscar dorkery behind me). (By the way, it's Frankie 𝐴𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑛 who's the "Teen Angel" and Frankie 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑖 sings the titular song telling us what's the word.)

John Ananias

Nope, one more, because I haaaaave to say these things: (a) I love Robert Downey Jr. and Joan Cusack being at this Oscars, the latter as a nominee, just 3 years after they were castmates burned up in that bizarre & non-triumphant SNL season; (2) Michael Caine's anti-Bond (more anti- than knockoff) was more Harry Palmer, in the three Harry Palmer films - produced, by the way, by one of the Bond producers, Harry Saltzman; (III) Michelle Pfeiffer hanging her head down and bearing that "this fuckin' guy" smile during Dennis Quaid is...just such great Pfeiffer PFace.

Rob

The Bruce Vilance podcast has some good anecdotes, but will be a frustrating listen for Garys; they get a lot of things wrong that they could easily look up, and it becomes a bit repetitive hearing Bruce say each episode: “well, the directors do the nominating and they’re a small group who…” etc.

Julie

IIRC Carly Simon had terrible stage fright throughout her career and I wonder if that's why they skipped those performances.

I read Oscar Wars and thought I knew how bad the ceremony was but didn’t watch it til now and I can’t overstate how AWFUL the opening Snow White opening number is. No words can express how much of a disaster it is

Carrie Williams

I remember watching these Oscars and being overjoyed to see Amy Irving & Richard Dreyfus together because they played a couple in a movie I loved from like 1981 called The Competition

Sam Hetherington

I looked up the opening number and… wow. The only way that could have been worse is if Snow White had started saying “Vincent Price did the thing”

Clint

re: referencing nine…can confirm that “guido guido guido!” is something that several of my friends and i still jokingly sing to each other

So old queen ghosts in a mansion inherited by (shudder) a Brett Ratner type - there's a screenplay in there... ...also am I the only one who also thought of the OTHER Allen Carr (Allen with an E this time) whose apparently magic stop smoking book helped Ashton Kutcher, Ellen, and, like, my uncle quit?

Elliott Sainsbury

The "I Wanna Be an Oscar Winner" performance is truly one of the most dreadful Oscar performances of them all. It kept going on and ON! They really threw Ricki Lake under the bus with that styling (unless she did it herself)! The giant statuette wobbling slightly at the end destroyed me. Also - the Wikipedia photo of Allan Carr is... quite something!

Emily

I was finally able to watch that opening number & - wow - is that cringe AF! I can see what Carr was trying to do but oh boy. Even if they hadn’t used Snow White & pissed off Disney, it still would have been bad.

Nicolette Hart

There was no in memorial part. Or was that cut out if the YouTube version

Chrissy

I came into this thinking that the Rob Low SnowWhite bit was just a brief, awkward interaction before reading nominees. My eyes were opened and I truly would like to know what Glenn Close was thinking at that extravagazana of (Beauty & the Beast-inspired? Tropical club mush-mash? I don’t know) kitsch. Love that Lily Tomlin was like, “umm…ok.”

Jamie Wamie

I know it’s a awkward but I find it deeply moving when the elderly stars appear in the opening number, knowing that for many of them this would have been their last public appearance. It seems like Allan Carr genuinely adored Old Hollywood and just wanted to put on a loving tribute to it :(

Katharine White

You’re Wrong About does a great episode on this as well, for anyone who wants some supplementary listening! I ended up feeling very sorry for Allan Carr. He was kind of his own worst enemy in the end.

Daniel

I delight in repeat viewings of the Allan Carr Oscars opening number, unhinged trainwreck though it may be. Fascinating to see such creativity so wildly miss the mark.

German Munoz

I remember watching this live at home! I faintly have memories of Snow White singing about the Chinese Theatre, and my 8 year old self thinking "Huh?", lol. And my brother and I quoted from the Billy Crystal monologue to each other for YEARS! 😂 Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane.

sleightsofheart

Listening to this episode is like having the world's wildest cheese dream described to you

George Bailey doing a dick joke is just wrong.
