We're back for another Exception episode, this time getting sucked into the black-and-white town of Gary Ross' Pleasantville! Topics include: Joan Allen's performance that almost earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, Nick At Nite, piercings, late 1990s movie where a naked lady gets drawn, Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire in the moments right before superstardom, and Fiona Apple.

So excited for this one! I remember being obsessed with this unique movie and listening to the soundtrack all the time.

The going to ten but resetting the number back to zero for the winner sounds fun. Or if you wanted to play to a number maybe 15 if 10 sounds too quick of a turnaround? Would you also do a bonus covering the Criterion movie that was purchased? Great ep! ❤️

Sarah Lang

Oh Chris, how could forget our trivia triumph of Joan Allen in Tucker: The Man And His Dream!

So in 10 Things I Hate About You, David Krumholtz actually had the penis drawn on his face when he was wide awake and talking. Which is what made it absolutely hilarious I think!

Amid listening to the top 5 Fiona Apple talk in this ep, it made me do two things: 1) I paused the episode and listened to extraordinary machine in its entirety. Great record. 2) I felt compelled to come here and share The Spotify Game. My spouse and I play it a lot; it’s basically the IMDb game, but guessing a given musician’s algorithmically determined “top 5” songs on their Spotify page. Hints after two wrong guesses can be album names that the songs come from, years, playing clips, and other free-for-all-of-hints based nonsense. Would LOVE to hear a Turbulent Brilliance ep that is all Chris and Joe playing this.

As someone who loves this movie and also went to Catholic school (very here for Joe’s Catholic anecdotes), I’m compelled to share that for a meditation class where we had to come up with our own meditations/zen moments for the class to participate in (almost like nap time, but for teens), I chose the Pleasantville score as my music. Everyone else chose classical music or Gregorian chants lol.

Omg, Chris's similarity to Paul Lind is finally addressed!! xoxoxo I thought it was just me!!

I need a full episode of you two discussing Fiona Apple, please and thank you.

Stephanie Radcliffe

I was screaming in my house "He's from Another World!" while Joe was looking up the SATC episode, thank goodness we got there eventually.

Chauncey Telese

I'm shocked Joe didn't bring up She's All That when discussing Paul Walker.

Also i could talk Nick at Nite with them for hours.

‘Fetch the Bolt Cutters’ kept me sane during the pandemic. Epic.

When you said Reese's and was a surprise, all I could think is that neither of you must have been the type to repeatedly watch The Man on the Moon like my sister and me.

Joy Novak

I'm get so happy whenever Searching for Bobby Fisher is even mentioned on a podcast.

Also, yes - as a preteen girl when Man in the Moon came out, Reese was on my radar very early. That movie stuck with me. I'm still nostalgic for the London twins and am scared of plows.

Jack Greenwood

My favorite franchise is the hunger games and I feel attacked this episode 😭
