It's been a while and I'm back with something that challenges me a little bit more!
This time we've got some exploration of the daily life of Max and Mia. Aside from the fast food set, we haven't really seen much of them outside of more design-style illustrations. It's my second attempt at really trying to get the vibe of bike-riding characters right, so it's still a little bit rough around the edges!
With the help of lots of references, I've finally settled on a set of compositions to try out. After lots of trial and error trying to get the lighting to work with both the setting and the designs, we finally have 2 pieces that I'm fairly happy with!
It's been a while since I really worked with overcast lighting, and it feels a lot harder to build detail with that it used to. - To elaborate, overcast light almost always forces us to draw multiple areas at very similar levels of detail, which can make it difficult to prioritize and efficiently finish the piece, especially at a higher overall level of polish. Hence the warm lighting highlights necessary to direct attention and create asymmetry.
More to come in the process walkthroughs that will be coming soon!
There are another two pieces that sadly did not make it to the end, as I had underestimated greatly the amount of planning it takes to illustrate a believable bike workshop (in detail), and designing helmets that both, A.Look cool, and B. feel like they are proportionate! I'll put these "bloopers" up too since I always like to share about the challenging and frustrating parts of drawing in a fair manner.
In the end I'm more motivated than ever to really move ahead with designing some cool helmets for them right away, so maybe it's not all bad! :)
Thank you so much for all your kind support, even through these busy times where my pace is can a little wobbly ♥
