On September 10th it will be the 25th anniversary of the first "Bobbins" comic being published. I'd like to celebrate this with a fulsome programme of events but as always, I have had no time to prepare anything and as a result, this epochal moment will pass with only the sound of a damb squib being stamped upon. I've not even started the commemorative jigsaw puzzle design.

At best I will write an essay, an essay overshadowed by a powerful awareness that a. I was very lucky and b. promoting my work has never been harder so c. I should have done better on this special occasion. But at least I remembered it was the 25th anniversary before it happened, unlike the 10th anniversary or the 20th. It's progress!

Fortunately, ChatGPT can step in here and help me out. But what to do? First up, a new Scary Go Round adventure with all the things long term fans like! I don't really remember what they liked, but I'll guess.

[I preface this by saying that at first ChatGPT claimed Shelley Winters wasn't a character in Scary Go Round, but then when I insisted it was, the AI remembered, and apologised. Weird times.]

Me: I am the creator of the webcomic Scary Go Round. If I was to make a new story about Shelley Winters and Amy Chilton, what could it be about? The story should be sexy and dangerous.

ChatGPT: Title: "Sinister Seduction"

Synopsis: Shelley Winters and Amy Chilton find themselves entangled in a web of intrigue and forbidden desires when they stumble upon a secret society in their town of Tackleford. Drawn into the dark underbelly of the town, they discover an underground world filled with seductive characters, hidden desires, and dangerous secrets.

As Shelley and Amy delve deeper, they uncover a series of mysterious disappearances that lead them to a charismatic and enigmatic figure known only as "The Temptress." This seductive mastermind uses her allure and charm to manipulate and control those who fall under her spell.

Driven by a mix of curiosity and personal stakes, Shelley and Amy must resist the temptations that surround them while navigating through a labyrinth of dangerous encounters and deceitful alliances. As they inch closer to the truth, they realize that their own desires and vulnerabilities may be their biggest obstacles in unraveling the mystery.

"Sinister Seduction" is a thrilling tale that explores themes of desire, power, and the blurred lines between passion and danger. It showcases the strength and wit of Shelley and Amy as they navigate through an unpredictable world, testing the limits of their friendship and their own identities.

Me: I love this! Please could you come up with new catchphrases for Shelley and Amy? They should be short and snappy.

[ChatGPT took three whole minutes to spit the following heartbreaking works of staggering genius out]

ChatGPT:Shelley Winters:

"Adventure awaits!"

"Danger's my middle name!"

"Rule-breaker extraordinaire!"

"Chaos is my playground!"

"No fear, all fun!"

Amy Chilton:

"Brains and brawn!"

"Outsmarting danger, daily!"

"Calculating moves, winning grooves!"

"Fearless and focused!"

"Master of clever escapes!"

___

Now while the plot is merely scanty, the catchphrases are terrible. But the joy of ChatGPT is to think of it as an idiotic collaborator who will just try and try and try but never outshine you. So my new catchphrases are:

SHELLEY

1. "Immolation awaits!"2. "Dwaynger's my middle name!"3. "Ruler-breaker extraordinaire!"4. "BeOS is my playground!"5. "All fear, no fun!"

AMY1. "Brains and bran!"2. "Outfarting danger, daily!"3. "Calculating skives, winning jives!"4. "Fearful and unfocussed!"5. "Master of furtive masturbation!"See, this is easy. I will return with more of this new, SGR25 event, soon, as the work of creation truly begins.

Make the SGR 1000 piece jigsaw a reality. Take my money!

Jack Christmas

From one point of view, it's your work's anniversary, so really you should be the main/only recipient of the celebrations. You should get a big cake with 25 candles, or a weekend at Center Parcs perhaps. From another point of view, I have it on good authority that "multi-series crossover where all the characters are toddler-age and attending the same nursery school" is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

John Bowers

These catchphrases are not exactly fire, but they do have a smoky demeanor.

Richard Kirk

"The Temptress" and "Sinister Seduction" ? It's going to be Daisy, isn't it? ChatCPT has the hots for Daisy.

RJ Dial

Here at SGR +25, would love to get your take on the future of comics with the advent of AI art tools. A longtime friend who was a US nationally syndicated cartoonist took his catalog of B&W daily strips from the 1990s-2000s and 1) had them colorized to his specs almost overnight, and 2) using his prior work as the basis, can make all new work using just prompts. (Midjourney AI). To say he is floored and stunned is an understatement. This is a sea-change that is the introduction of the sketch tablet x1000. He's still unsure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.... and so am I.

Steve Jeffery

A shout out to BeOS, I like it! Meanwhile Amy's last contribution has me worrying about details in past panels I may have missed. What naughtiness were you sneaking by us Allison?

Sean Kinlin

I also do not recall any such activity on Amy's part, but I think that means she's very good at the furtive part.

William Cole

The day some bag of bolts can out-write Johnny A. Is the day I shuffle off this mortal coil! Congrats on 25 years!

Steve McSheffrey

For the anniversary I would take a text piece with short blurbs of where you see the characters being in their lives right now. Wouldn't even need art. I'll get you started: Desmond The Fishman is hiding under deep cover to stay out of the clutches of Gorton's black ops division.

Alaric Shapli

Should I take "Shelley Dwaynger Winters" to be canon?

Paul Robertson

Ahhhh, they're the taste I remember!

Marc Arsenault

Yeah. 2 and 5 on your revised Amy catchphrases ring true.

Michael Crees

Hmm, I am inclined to wonder if ChatGPT is actually aware of any of your work.

Nathan Myers

Shelley and Amy are supposed to be subject to "temptations" of The Temptress? It is when we see actual, unfiltered output from ChatGPT that it is hammered home how it really is just stringing together random words.

Chris J. Zähller

To say that ChatGPT is aware at all is to misconstrue its nature. It is a predictive program; given a phrase, it predicts which words would most likely come next, based on the corpus of text it has previously digested. It does not understand the meaning of words, as such.

Michael Crees

Then I am forced to assume it has not consumed and digested Mr Allison's body of work.

Daniel Schultz

Didn't ChatGPT give you basically a Steeple plot?

Richard Kirk

IMHO: AI don't know nuffin'. Get it to do the shit jobs. Colorising is just the sort of thing they do. AJ could try training it on his sketches and his final versions, and see whether it can turn A into B. A lot of the work is making a sketch into something with uniformly thick black lines separating blocks flat colour. I find it amazing that we can scrape enough of human responses to write dialogue; it works but treat it as a drunk friend who knows all that is on the internet but had no morals, and will make up stuff if that pleases you. It's not evil - just a bit too keen to please. As for everything else - people are just going to have to learn that you can't believe anything, which is what the web has been telling them for years. ChatCPT seems to like Daisy, so there is hope.

Richard Kirk

25 years. There should be cake. Cake such as God has not seen...

Hank Heyming

"Calculating moves, winning grooves!"

scarygoround

It knows enough about Scary Go Round that I could ask it who Shelley's best friend is, and it knew. it's probably trained on Wikipedia, the SGR Wikia, old interviews - not the comics themselves. If the Oh No Robot transcripts still existed, it could probably do a lot more damage.

Michael Crees

Bard seems to know pretty much the same, given the correct context.

Mo Holkar

This feels very heartfelt and personal, thank you [your name]

So close, and yet a million miles away

Matt (not that one)

Congratulations on the anniversary! I've adored SGR in its various forms over the years, and it's wonderful to see how you're a Big Time Comics Man now. You've earned it!

Matt (not that one)

I think you've just exposed another weakness of ChatGPT. Everyone knows Shelley's middle name is Endeavour--except the robots. Excellent vigilance! So long as we keep remembering middle names and counting fingers, AI will never fool us.

Andrea Burgess

If no-one uses the word "busfuckers" in anger, I ain't buying it. (Happy 25 years, by the way!)

Richard Kirk

I have been reading the Burgess Shale of the 1990's Bobbins strips. There is Robot Daisy in that. Maybe that's why ChatCPT has been strutting its stuff lately, with the cyber-reek of After-Compile cologne.
