And Gabrielle's big head strikes again lol. She still reminds me of a kid sometimes. She's so mature in times of crisis but in these little moments... I appreciated the Toothpick Xena though.

XENA WITH THESE LOVE CONFESSIONS? Lowkey I'ma need her to chill on a few of these because she's setting some pretty high expectations. That fight sequence at the end had to have taken like a week to fully film. I know Lucy was dreadddding those days haha. But her catching that arrow from behind her head is a top 10 moment for me. Not to mention how absolutely terrifying she looks when she tells them there are thousands more like her.

One of my favourite episodes ever. It always makes me cry when Xena tells Gabby how much she means to her.

So love this episode. As for how romantic this is, I think the fact they had to keep it all subtext, in a lot of ways, makes it more romantic. Because it had to be all meaningful moments between them instead of physical love.

Kel

Oh and one more thing...your discussion of how they both put themselves last made me realize that that is what Xena is doing by choosing Gabrielle over the greater good. Fighting for the greater good has been the path Xena's been on to make some sort of amends for her past and find some sort of redemption. She's willing to sacrifice that for Gabrielle. If she had let the army attack and saved Gabrielle, it would have been another huge weight on Xena's soul. God I love this show and the layers of the love between them!

One of my favorite episodes! I remember how much it meant to me back then. I was in my twenties and I had just come out. Even if they kept it subtext the show was so important regarding representation. I‘m 52 now and I feel all warm and fuzzy watching it. I still love them SO much 😭

Xena is faced with the prospect of choosing between the greater good and Gabrielle. That’s pretty much the antithesis to the entire show. “The mission or the love” is how I refer to it. Of course they would always choose each other, but they don’t make it easy for them to. I love that so much about it. Oh and so true, Hunter. Even “explicitly canon” cannot match up to this. This is what love and romance is. I don’t know what people are looking for when they say it’s not explicitly canon. R.J. Stewart: “Xena clearly allows the circumstances of personalities in her life to dictate to a certain extent who she is. She'd like to be stronger. One of her great attractions to Gabrielle is that Gabrielle doesn't." The reason why Xena and Gabrielle works so well and is so beloved in the LGBTQ community even to this day is because they're rooted in reality and authenticity even when they live in an environment of the mythical and fantastical. What they have between them is rooted in so much feeling, emotion and action and it's really difficult to come across a canon WLW ship that isn't just ticking off representation boxes because they have to. The thing is is the XENA lot didn't have to. In fact they were told not to. But they did it anyway because they wanted to. Because they knew it was right for their characters and their relationship. Their natural progression. That's why you see a real relationship and partnership there. It's because they refused to just make it a "give the queer fans a bone to chew on" type of thing that so many TV shows today do because they don't really care about it. They don't care about WLW/queer representation. They don't care about queer female characters and queer narratives. They don't care at all. These people cared. These straight white men cared. You watch the way they talk about these characters and their relationship together and it's just something that I still have great difficulty finding today. The sincerity and conscientiousness with which they represent Xena and Gabrielle and the intimacy of their relationship. It's astounding. I will always be so fucking grateful to all of them for just the simple fact that they cared to represent the truth of women loving women. For just the simple fact that they knew what representation is and they endeavoured to showcase it in a time when it was much more beneficial not to. When it was in their best interests to not do that. Yet they did it because they knew it was most right for their characters. Two lead female characters. The only two lead characters credited in the main titles. And they still made it a love story. Think about that. Dancing between the lines of maintext and subtext because you HAVE to and not because you want to is so much different to forcing and contriving two female characters to have a queer relationship just because it ticks off the "representation" boxes people want ticked. You know, I often think about what it would be like if XENA had been created for and aired on network television or on a streaming service in this day and age and I physically visibly cringe every time because I know it would be awful. These men had it down no problem in a day and age when it was severely censored. You've got to respect them.

It took 300 Spartans to hold back the Persian army amd they all died doing so yet 1 Warrior Princess can do the same and survives! I love how they waited for so long into the fight to break into the classic Warrior Princess theme, which gets used vary sparingly at this point in the show which is a shame since its so powerful. But even better than the action... the romanciest romance that ever did romance! Ye Gods! 💕

This episode was a very dangerous episode. Renée ended up hurting her other ankle when a one of the stunt guys fell on her when they dropped in from the roof. Then that guy ended up braking his leg a day later. And when they did the scene with the fire stick they used real fire and forgot to switch to a prop stick and burned or almost burn Renée.

When Gabrielle is hallucinating, because of the fever, she is speaking to Xena, recreating in her mind the moment from Sins of the Past where she was trying to convince Xena to let her travel with her to Amphipolis. BUT here she says something that we never heard in Sins of the Past or after in the show until this point. She said that she has the gift of prophecy! So, if this writers were recreating the same speach from Sins of the Past and we never heard Gabrielle saying that she had the gift of prophecy, why is it here? Well, for one simple reason. This episode was written by the couple Gene and Noreen and this was their first and only script for Xena. When a newcomer freelancer writer do an episode for the first time, the producers send them some key scripts of previous episodes for them to have an idea of what the core of the show is about. Sins of the Past was one of the scripts sent to them and, in fact, originally, that line is in first draft of Sins of the Past. Gabrielle was suposed to have the gift of prophecy but that idea was cut out very early on during season one development and that line was cut when that script was rectified before shooting. However, the script that was sent to the writers was not the reviewed one. And without knowing that this writers created that scene where Gabrielle dreams with Xena being killed by a warrior that jumps from the roof during the fight. It was a mistake that no one at the time of the shooting got. But it worked for the episode.

2 Girls 1 Episode

I can't remember if i mentioned it here or in our season 3 recap (spoiler haha), but I love this also because they spent so much time not listening or trusting each other and going against each others wishes, that Xena decided this time to listen to Gabrielle and trust in the greater good. - Tash

Xena is the most wildly romantic television show I've ever watched. I think that's partly because it's a fantasy show, so they can regularly have these over-the-top scenes of extreme peril and self-sacrifice for each other that would seem absurd in a more "realistic" show, but also, as you say, it's because they weren't allowed to express their love more directly or, God forbid, show them going to bed together as the culmination of their feelings. They had to find more subtly emotional ways to show how Xena and Gabrielle feel about each other. In this respect, Xena reminds me of classic Hollywood films from the 1930s and 1940s, of which I am a huge fan. They faced insanely puritanical rules about sex (like even married couples had to sleep in twin beds), so the filmmakers had to find other ways to portray the intimacy of relationships. I still find a lot of those old movies, and Xena, which faced similar restrictions, to be more romantic than most modern films and TV, where having a sex scene too often get used as an easy short cut to depict romance.

P.S. I love this episode so much!

I have that script. I wasn’t sure it was real but hearing this story, I guess it actually is. That raises so many questions for me about what the planned progression of Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship was meant to be compared to the one that they went with but never intended from the beginning. I would assume Gabrielle was supposed to be younger but they had to scrap that when Renee got the role. Not being able to pass for a teenager at the age she was. 23-24.

Girl4Music

Omg… that was one unlucky shooting then. Here’s me thinking the only slight with that was the hair on Lucy’s hand as Xena and Gabrielle held hands. Glad it turned out as well as it did considering how bad it went.

When the Xena show was beeing designed the producers wanted Xena to have two companions. One was going to be Gabrielle, an inocent and light-hearted young girl, who loved philosophy and studying myths and that has the power of premonition, and the other one was going to be Pan, a nymph of the forest, that would have some combat skills to help Xena during the fights. I don't know the real reasons that made them discard this early ideas but I assume that if Gabrielle could predict future events that would detract Xena's achievements as the hero. As for the character Pan, it was never introduced in any script or outline, so its idea died very early on. But I know that, when Hooves and Harlots was beeing written, the producers were considering having Ephiny to be the third element. However, when the producers saw the great chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle in the first 5 episodes shot for the first season and saw how good an actress Renee was and how physical she was, they clearly saw there was no need to add another character to their dynamic.

What is interesting is I have never seen this episode has the final of a "trilogy". However, I do think this episode is highly needed due to events that happened in "Maternal Instincts" and "The Bitter Suite". I honestly believe fans needed 1 more episode to see the love between Xena and Gabrielle and how real that love is. I also believe that it was a way to let fans realize how much of a loss it would be if Gabrielle was no longer a part of the show and a part of Xena's life. I do love this episode!

Girl4Music

And thank god they they didn’t. Thanks for all that ☺️

Gabrielle, keeps bringing up China because if Xena had been killed, she might always feel she killed her herself.
