EVERYONE. REMAIN. FUCKING. CALM.

I think the way they trapped Herc was actually really dumb. But I do love Callisto and Iolas going in the past. But what a twist of having Callisto be the one to kill her dad and her family. It could be up to the audience on what they may think of it, but what do you think? Was young Callisto seeing herself and assuming it was Xena.

Might I just add, Conquerer Xena is THAT bitch. I love when they put those two in a different universe and they don't know each other. It always pulls at your heart strings a bit. Although in the others they always seem to make it back to each other, but in this?!?! Bro.

Let's remember these shows can't even get a simple "10 years ago" timeline right, you think they can manage time travel loops? Just don't think too much into it. And damn watching any Herc episode reminds me how much better Xena is. But thanks for checking these out. The first time I watched season 3, I had no clue there was an important bit on Hercules that would have explained some important stuff on Xena.

Tash, the correct term you’re looking for is a bootstrap paradox. It essentially means that there is no one true answer to the way things play out because the timelines are being messed with. It’s not that it creates alternate timelines as such - although the Conquerer Evil Xena period is considered an AU - it’s just that because things are meant to be the way they’re supposed to be, there will always be a scenario where it will still end up being that way regardless whether it’s “created” or not. If you’re into quantum physics you may be aware of the Copenhagen interpretation of even the Schrödinger's Cat thought experiment. It essentially means that a quantum system exists in superposition - so it is said to be in a combination of all possible states at the same time until it is measured or observed by consciousness. So because no one was around to “measure” or “observe” those states collapsing where they did, it didn’t happen and it also did happen. I know. Very confusing. But that’s why we shouldn’t ever mess with time.

Girl4Music

I mean I don’t think they did half that bad with the time travelling stuff. It’s just they started involving alternate universes and that’s where it got sketchy because there was no real need to do that. Bootstrap paradoxes always answer themselves.

Girl4Music

“Was young Callisto seeing herself and assuming it was Xena.” Who knows what Young Callisto thought. That child’s mind was fucked after that so it could even be said that she hallucinated it. As Tash said - memories change with time and the way Hudson plays Callisto is in a way where her mind never got to mentally develop properly due to the immense trauma and torture she was undergoing. She could have been experiencing severe PTSD for all we know. She was fucked, One thing is for sure though, it brings a whole new context to the phrase “You made me.”

I gave up worrying about the Xena timeline by season 2, because the writers don't worry about it either. Same thing with time travel rules. Since time travel itself is a fantasy, I just go along with however they they want to do it and enjoy the episode. No point in getting stressed about the specifics.

And whether or not time-traveling Callisto did kill her own parents, Xena still doesn't get off the hook. If she hadn't sent her army to destroy the village, none of it would have happened in any timeline. And btw, am I the only one who gets so bothered by young Callisto having blue eyes? Not to mention, I don't think she looks remotely like a girl who would grow up to look like Hudson, but I really get distracted by the blue eyes, lol. Maybe that's not Callisto at all! I know! Maybe it's her sister that previously she talked about dying in the same attack, but who somehow doesn't exist in this episode. Maybe the reason I don't worry about time travel and timelines is that I'm too busy worrying about blue eyes and sisters?

Girl4Music

This was wild! How do you hide something like this in Hercules when it clearly belonged in Xena? You would never know this whole other side to Callisto without it. You would have never had gotten an entire new area of Xena fanfiction titled “The Conquerer fics” without it. You would have never seen Gabrielle get crucified by Xena after an extremely homoerotic moment with her. ‘Armageddon Now’ is one of those crossover ep two-parters that just didn’t belong to the Hercules IP at all and yet it is in Hercules rather than in Xena. Just WILD. I think they did this because they knew by this point that no one was here for Hercules. They were all in on Xena and so had to have Xena characters in Hercules. And they were smart for doing that because it’s easily the best 2 eps of Hercules that there is because Kevin Sorbo is barely in it, Iolas takes front and center - and as I mentioned - Callisto gets a whole ass other side to her character that helps you understand her more as a character. That she’s really just severely depressed and damaged beyond all belief as she’s still suffering from her trauma as a child and hasn’t really grew up yet as a woman and therefore doesn’t have a grasp on reality. They hide all of that in Hercules because Hercules needed that boost through Xena by that point. Sad. And not to mention that iconic line from Evil Xena: “A hero? Me? Well, maybe I’ll even find true love, huh?”

Leslie M

"The ep that launched a thousand fics." I think the most extraordinary thing about this episode is the immense amount fan fiction it spawned. I wouldn't be surprised if there is as much Xena "Conqueror" fic as regular timeline fic. For a single episode that wasn't even on the Xena show itself, it sure caught the imagination of fans. I wonder why? [Snickering heard.]

This two episodes were written by Paul Robert Coyle who started as a freelancer on Xena (Ten Little Warlords, The Execution and A Necessary Evil and a couple more) and then became a producer of Hercules and one of the main writers. He was more of sci-fi type of writer and he created pretty good ideas and mythologies for both shows but here some mistakes were made, especially in the second part. From what we learned on Xena, the attack at Cira was at night and during Xena's army attack Callisto lost her father, mother AND sister. The sister didn't appear here and was not even mentioned. Although, I understand this was a problematic time for the producers because, due to Kevin health issues, they had to made huge changes and this two scripts were written in a very short time to compensate all the other big plans they had for a mid season crossover that was just not possible to produce.

André

The producers made it on purpuse to call some of the Xena audience to Hercules. They had planned huge crossovers (mid season and season finale) for this season of both shows but they didn't happened because Kevin Sorbo got sick and was almost absent for 3 months.

André

Oh, and Hudson stunt double was, I think, seven months pregnant when they filmed this.

Girl4Music

Thank the gods for that. I couldn’t stomach seeing Sorbo that much in my beloved Xena.

Girl4Music

“It’s blue eyes, the leather…”

Girl4Music

It was that huge homoerotic moment right before Xena sent Gabrielle to die on the cross. The fans envisioned Dom/Sub and here we are. However, I much prefer Queen Gabrielle/Queen’s Champion fics.

Girl4Music

Geez these producers had to jump huge hurdles and get insanely creative to get these shows to keep going without their leads or a loss less without them. I applaud them for their sheer determination to not have either of these shows shut down prematurely despite the circumstances.

Girl4Music

Another thing you have to admire these producers for. Not laying off (punishing) pregnant women for being pregnant.

I mean I don’t care so much about the timeline/AU mess up but the added depth of Callisto being the actual cause of her parents deaths and that she put Xenas face and name to herself. Would have been so interesting. Doesn’t absolve Xena in anyway just would have added a complexity to Callistos character, otherwise personally this is a nothing burger ep that actually adds nothing to the Xena story in my personal opinion. - Tash

HiCo

I am beyond happy that you included this two parter in your watch. Imho part 2 especially is something special and there is so much to unpack here. It's a rare treat seeing you both be surprised by an episode involving Xena! Those scenes with Callisto in Cirra... I don't care if that timeline got undone they are heartbreaking and I think about them all the time when Callisto appears on Xena. The look on her face when she sees her mother and father again after all those years and for a moment she is that happy little girl again. Her desperation and furrow brow of worry when they don't heed her warnings. Then the scenes in the barn. Ye Gods! Her realisation at what she did to her father and the wordless head shake to her mother. Then cradling her child self repeating how sorry she is. That is the Callisto I can't unsee whenever she is doing evil things. My heart just breaks for the tragic nature of her life. On the Lord of the Rings soundtrack there is a mournful track called Gollum's song with the lyrics "you can never go home" and that's Callisto. Even with this chance to undo things, she is so broken she screws it up. She can never go home. Damn Hudson is amazing. Then there is the two evil Xena scenes. I knew a certain Hunter would like seeing! Just like the Xena Scrolls sparking their own sub-genre of fic, the brief glimpse of the alternate timeline Conqueror Xena has it's own healthy sub-genre too! As for the time travel aspect, I've just learned to take it all with a pinch of salt and enjoy the ride otherwise you end up with a headache. They just say down and said, let's copy to main idea behind the first Terminator story and have fun with some alternate timelines that need to be fixed. Part 2 also helpfully has Hercules removed from most of the story, making it easy to fast forward past Sorbo too which is very polite of it. I'm usually quite harsh on him because *waves hand at twitter* but will point out that during S4 of HLJ he had some serious health problems. He had a stroke and like XWP S2 they had to work around the loss of their lead actor for a brief time and write episodes putting less strain on them when they could come back. I'm not 100% certain if that is what was going on here but it would fit by writing his scenes as separate from everything else for the bulk of the story.

2 Girls 1 Episode

My thoughts definitely wouldn’t get Xena off the hook cause she was still the cause of the raid and women and children were still killed. Just would have been an added interesting layer to Callistos story if the person who had physically killed her parents was herself. Cause personally I don’t think these eps add anything to her story we didn’t already know, and really only give us conquerer Xena which they could have put actually on Xena instead, but that’s just me. - Tash

Girl4Music

But do you think fans would have tolerated seeing Xena crucify Gabrielle in her show?

Girl4Music

Well, according to Schrödinger, she did kill her parents. But also, according to Schrödinger, Iolas also saved Alchemene. Time is just so bizarre dude.

Girl4Music

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it but there is an amazing character study video by The Bitch Of Rome called Child Of Cirra that really goes into just how tragic Callisto’s life story is and that even though she had to take accountability for her own actions, you can see they come from a place of severe depression and mental damage. It really shows you another side to her character that you don’t get to see in Xena for the most part.

André

This episode show us that if Hercules never existed Xena would never be good. Not even Gabrielle could turn her away from her dark side. What you guys think of this?

Leslie M

...and the endless opportunities for Conqueror kink that provided.

2 Girls 1 Episode

Didn’t say they should put the same storyline just said Conquerer Xena could have existed like this in an AU of Xena. They would have changed the circumstances and written it better and you would have got more of this characterisation. It could have even been a destroyer of nations flashback in a similar way. - Tash

Kel

Oh I know now that was the plan. But as someone who was watching it back in the 90s (and I was even an adult back then so can't explain it as a kid who didn't get it), I didn't realize that I was supposed to watch these episodes, so don't think they did a very good job of marketing it as such.

Girl4Music

Hercules never turned her good. She decided to turn good on her own. But Hercules gave her the opportunity to choose. Somebody else would have to do that for her to make the decision to turn good and it’s simply that there wasn’t anyone in the AU. That’s how I see it. Gabrielle couldn’t reach her because she was already so far gone.

HiCo

Just the sort of long form video I love that tells a mini story. Exactly captures how I see Callisto whenever she appears. 💔

In response to Hunter's question, yes, the actress who played Hope here is the same actress in Maternal Instincts.
