No it’s typically just the badge in terms of uniform changes. At my school the head boy and girl got other privileges such as sitting on a chair with the teachers in assembly (the rest of us had to sit on the floor)

That’s just how I was taught! But it’s interesting to note that in many parts of Asia, offering your left hand is considered quite rude because that hand is traditionally used for personal hygiene after bathroom visits.

Hate to say it but I think the picture of the Head and Charlie shaking hands is the wrong way round as they are shaking left hands (there may be a reason). Charlie's face when the Head puts the badge in, is a picture.

Yep! I don’t know if it’s considered rude in Europe/US exactly, but I think everyone still universally offers their right hand to prevent an awkward dance where one person puts out their left and the other puts out their right at the same time and then you realize somebody needs to switch but then you both switch at the same time so now you have the same problem, then some awkward laughter, then maybe the same problem a couple more times till everybody gets it figured out. 😉 I’ve always wished we had the same convention where everyone universally moves to the right to get out of each other’s way in a tight hallway for this same reason. 😆

I’ve been seeing the left handed handshake a lot in other shows lately actually. I don’t see anything wrong with it personally and I’m 50. It wasn’t common but looks fine to me. Honestly I didn’t even notice.

My apologies Alice but I had no intention of suggesting it was rude; it isn't. I'm of the old school and left hand shaking just seems odd. I am so in awe of your drawing. The images are so expressive and make the stories so much easier to follow. I cannot find words of sufficient quality to describe Heartstopper. It is so brilliant and well written. It is definitely an ‘old school’ thing. I forgot myself that it was a thing, but I remember my father mentioned that years ago when he used to be in the military and travel around the world. I don’t know how true this is, but he said to me that in the Arab world, it was considered an insult because that was the hand they used to, well, wipe themselves with. I think another commenter said it was the ‘dirty’ hand? That’s the reason. At least that’s what my father claimed. I don’t know how true that is. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it. Someone’s always going to find something to be offended about (not referring to you, Robert, just in general).

I am so stuck on the last panel of Charlie getting pinned with the Head Boy badge. His face...I don't know how one picture can convey so much emotion, but you can literally hear the "oh, shit this IS real" and the "they heard me, and, they chose me...ME!" thoughts that are whirling through Charlie's head. There is also something about Charlie's overall demeanor, with his new haircut and wearing his sports coat and running his confident yet open and vulnerable campaign that feels so grown up, but then we also get a touch of that wondrous, hopeful teenage anything is possible vision as he glances down at his new title. It IS a new era for Charlie, and it's also a new era for Truham, and everyone in that audience knows it. (I can also already see Charlie back at home standing in front of his bedroom mirror, looking at that badge in awe while also knowing he is fully ready to tackle this new responsibility!). WELL DONE, Charlie!
