The internal conflict is strong. I am excited to see how Alice builds the tension and I love angst in my stories. But I never wanna see my babies in pain. At least I can have faith that Alice will work it all out

Yikes - this is the pity party couch 🛋 😳. They need to switch to drinking water. Nick is clearly not all right and Elle is so not all right she can't see it. I don't really see her and Tao as endgame, she is continuing to deal with massive life changes but with a clearer independent vision than Nick has.

Everybody around them sees that they are Nick and Charlie, that they are endgame, but it’s probably difficult to hear when you struggle and you have concerns… this is them who have to work hard to be Nick and Charlie in the long run

First, as a parent of a current freshman in college, I just had a front row seat to all of the stresses of senior year in high school. I assume that the final year of sixth form is the same vibe. Can I just say, those kids really go through it?! On the surface, they get to enjoy all of the privileges of being the top dogs at school, but beyond that there is so much uncertainty. There's applying to university -- a process which includes trying to decide your entire career path at the age of 17, taking exams (whether they're A levels or SATs/ APs/ IBs), writing essay after essay, and then so much waiting. Then there's the worrying about how your university options correspond to those of your friends. And the difficulty of making decisions that you know will alter the trajectory of your life. Obviously, there can be excitement surrounding all of this, too. But the anxiety is so real. So, I love how that is captured in this scene! And I love that both Nick and Elle are feeling it. That is REAL LIFE. The second thing I want to say is that as much as we all love that "Nick and Charlie" label, I can imagine that if you *are* Nick or Charlie, being reduced to that tagline would feel a bit reductive. Saying "oh, you're fine because you're Nick and Charlie" doesn't allow much room for individual struggles or feelings. It simplifies their relationship, as if it's all sunshine and rainbows, when we know that it isn't. It's love and work and communication and support... but it's not always as easy as "Nick and Charlie" sounds. Again, that is REAL LIFE.

There is that hesitation (again) in Nick’s words and “looking past the present moment” expression captured in that first panel…the questioning (of exactly what Nick isn’t even fully aware of yet) bubbling to the surface. The fear, the yes, we’re Nick and Charlie, together, and it’s so amazing! I love Charlie! But I’m having to make big decisions for just Nick…how do I do that and also be Nick and Charlie together forever. God, I’m going to miss him. And he’s doing so well. Charlie’s Head Boy. He’s good. We’re good. I’ll be good…i am good…and all this happens while Elle is having similar questions in her head (while hot dog Tao talks to his new bff the parrot…did they get a name yet, lol?) Growing up sucks sometimes ❤️

Elle’s quick, light-hearted response, and her look over at Tao, suggests that she was asking more to reassure herself of her own long-distance situation than to get into a deep conversation with Nick about his (which is totally fine! We all do this and need this from time to time). My current and previous relationships have been “model couple” situations, and I experienced that kind of feedback a lot. All well-intentioned, but it does make it hard to open up about relationship struggles. It almost feels like people are relying on you to be the steady couple, and there is pressure not to let the conversation get too deep. N+C are lucky to have such a healthy relationship, and their friends look up to them for good reasons! But they will each need a friend who is able to go deep with them, because every relationship has challenges and requires growth. (Or they need more long car trips with friends where they get tired enough of each other to start speaking bluntly, like the uni visits!) I really feel for Nick here. 💚

This is what I was thinking!😬 I went back and looked at the timeline for the N&C novella which starts on the last day of school so the argument shouldn’t be coming until the summer, but i’m wondering if we will see some sort of time skip or montage situation from Alice to get to that point because this definitely seems to be foreshadowing!

Spoileralert we know what will happen. Only thing I'd like to know if this comic is going to end where Nick&Charlie begins or if we go a bit further into an epilogue. Have to say I am undecided which I would prefer. The beautiful open ending of Nick&Charlie or simply more of them.

Ooh, this is so interesting to look at from Elle’s perspective. If Nick had admitted to feeling anxious, I wonder if she might have shared some of her anxieties too. It’s interesting because her saying “you’re nick and charlie you’ll be together forever” isn’t just about the pressure that puts on Nick here — it also shows that their friends have an idealized idea of their relationship. So if Elle is having doubts about whether or not she and Tao can make it, she’s less likely to voice that to Nick if she’s putting his relationship on a pedestal. And it also might make her feel worse about her relationship in comparison, if she thinks N&C have been totally unaffected by the long-distance thing while she and Tao might be having a harder time.
