This page feels like the aftermath of the election. That has taken up so much time and energy and support. It has resulted it such confidence and growth for Charlie and important culture change for the school touching the lives of many. Nick has been a powerhouse of support behind Charlie, perhaps feeling a little lost in it all. Seeing the two of them alone with that huge crowd down the hall feels like a refocus. Nick confesses he hasn't had chance to talk to Charlie...maybe in a long time...and Charlie is now looking right at him. Perhaps no more corner time for Nick and time for the couple to shine together ✨️.

I love that they have finally escaped the party and are alone, but I'm also feeling a bit sad for Nick in the 2nd and 3rd panels, and in the previous few pages in general... as much as Nick loves to see Charlie's confidence blossoming (like we all do) I can't help but feel Nick is perhaps losing some of his own confidence, feeling like he is now the 'quieter' and perhaps 'less interesting' half of the couple... spending most of the party away from other people and letting Charlie do his thing.. and like he's said before, feeling lost when he's not with Charlie and that he isn't too sure who he is without him 💔 . Having said all of that, by the 5th panel I think Nick (and all of us) knows what is in store next, and that little smile is returning... 😊 Cant' wait for the next page!

Clearly Mr Farouk's belief in Book 5 that 'a lot of the younger boys will be inspired seeing Charlie as Head Boy' was right and the amount of his vote confirms that bullying is seen by many as a problem in the school. I agree that Charlie is probably in the ascendancy in their relationship but he still very much loves Nick.

I would say that Charlie hasn’t really seen himself as popular in the past, even though he has a wonderful friend group and people seem to like him. But a solid piece of data like 82% is enough to overcome his anxiety and natural self-effacing tendencies.

Charlie looks so calm and centered. Nick’s internal struggle is evident from his expressions and reserved actions, but his connection to Charlie is still so evident. Growth comes from that place of discomfort, and I think Nick is about to experience some necessary growth.

This page hits me on two levels...the first is the obvious affection and respect Nick and Charlie have for each other softly portrayed on this page. I love seeing CHARLIE pulling Nick out of the party (it was Nick at Harry's party doing the same!), and then ,the next 4 panels are all just cozy and warm (the parrot omg is killing me!) with a little touch of sassy Charlie that always makes Nick just melt. You can see it in that last close up of Nick. He is SO proud of Charlie (82% of the vote?! Those poor other 3 candidates, lol!)...But, then the second level hits, and I get a similar ache like when Nick was clearly (to us!) falling for Charlie but still trying to figure out what was actually happening. And now, we see Nick, with these internal inklings reminding him something is off. He's never really been questioned or had to take a stand about who he is or what he really wants as an individual, either from himself or even externally from teachers or classmates/bullies (other than David, but when you grow up with an asshole sibling, you tend to wall yourself off from their BS taunts)...this is a new, somewhat fuzzy place for Nick, and I love that Alice is exploring this aspect of mental health in its silent struggle. From the outside, Nick looks "normal," like he has everything together, but on the inside, uncertainty is brewing. Even though he likely cannot even name IT yet (am I jealous of Charlie? Clearly no. Am I proud of him? YES! Am I happy? I think so, yea, I mean, look at me and Charlie! and the questions he avoids: What do I want to study at uni? ha ha, you know, let's worry about that later), I suspect he feels kind of numb, with a little imposter syndrome...It's really hard to feel not right, but also not know why you don't feel right, especially when most everyone else thinks you are alright. Nick needs to find HIS voice...the one giving those inklings inside him🫂

I agree RCM. I don't think Nick is jealous of Charlie at all. There has been some discussion that he is second place in the relationship right now, that he is not achieving enough. I don't think that is the correct lens to look at a healthy relationship. Equality doesn't mean the same. Couples bring different strengths to a relationship. What may be missing is communication. It is the special thing they always had. As Tara noted, they talked about their feelings. I wonder if Nick has felt he needs to take second place on this due to Charlie's mental health struggles. When someone you love is in a dark place, that uncertainty and feeling that something is off can continue even though the person is in recovery. The page of Nick visiting Charlie at the hospital really threw me for a loop. Has Nick talked all this frightening time through with Charlie? Or is it weighing on him as well as other challenges in his near future?

I can see the seeds of the Nick and Charlie Novella growing, how Nick might latch on to uni as something of his own sans Charlie (when he sees Charlie growing so clearly into his own self) and how that will leave Charlie feeling left behind. I wonder if Nick is sensing that this role, fabulous as it is, will take a fair amount of Charlie’s attention and time that was formerly his. He’s totally supportive but there’s also an unacknowledged loss. Their roles are changing. Poor Nick doesn’t have the tools to process that Charlie now has through his therapy, and it feels like it’s all getting quite heavy for him to carry. Moving into carer/supporter trauma (2nd hand trauma), and role-adaption territory. Time for an upgrade to Nick 2.0!
