I remember right at the start of drawing this part of the story, you said this was just a progressive part, that nothing dramatic happens. So please just follow your heart on this. See with this and the previous pages I don’t really think of Nick’s reaction being too unrealistic. Charlie did join for Nick, but he also did well in the sport and seemed to have fun, especially with Nick. I always thought that rugby gave Charlie new experiences as well. So I think it would make sense if this hasn’t come up before now. I know Nick will miss Charlie playing rugby too, but I also think maybe it’ll be good for Nick to have this independent experience again, such as Charlie will with Head Boy! 🫶🏾

And... Alice's hmmm throws me back into therapy lol. Nick's face before he says he will be fine seems like a throwback to when he talked to Charlie about wearing a mask around other people and not being his true self. His comment about not keep making Charlie do something he doesn't want to do is revealing. But Charlie holding Nick's hand and leaning in reminds me of how Nick did the same when telling Charlie about Leeds being his first choice. Is Charlie going to focus on Nick and force out some of these feelings Nick has been struggling with? There is no one better to love and support him ❤️

I know Nick is smiling here and it seems like masking, but he is saying the exact truth. He WILL be sad, and ultimately, he WILL be fine. I don’t see him hiding his feelings here, just expressing them in a way that also honors Charlie’s feelings. Smiling and saying, “Nah, it’s fine” (a la pre-therapy Charlie) would have been masking. I know this won’t be perfect for Nick and there are about to be awkward growth moments that he would handle differently looking back, but he’s doing really well here.

i love how it's clear that charlie knows nick as much as he does because he sees what nick's doing by saying he'll be fine, but at the same time i don't think nick even realises what he's doing or even feeling here! when it's so normal to tell a loved one something that you know they want to hear, it's almost more difficult to even feel what your own feelings are on the matter. so charlie's question surprising him it's such a fascinating observation!

This is such a subtle but pivotal moment in any long term relationship. 🥹 Thank you Alice for never shying away from the tough topics. When you get together at a young age it is easy to be in each other's pockets. But as you grow and become your own person, it is important to communicate and tell each other that you can have your own hobbies and some different interests and be equally in love, if not more! In fact, it is so nice to see that both Nick and Charlie realise who they really are and what they love doing with the love and support of each other and their friends!

Nick may also be struggling with some unacknowledged resentment, even jealousy here. This new role for Charlie is already making changes to their relationship. Charlie is stronger now & is stepping away from needing Nick’s protection - which has been a role Nick’s played for Charlie right since the beginning when he rescued Charlie from Ben. Nick’s proud of Charlie but I think there’s a bit of negative emotion too, hence the mask…

Nick knows he's going to be playing rugby away from Charlie at University in a year, so logically this makes sense as a little practice transformation. Charlie already makes music without Nick, and they are both leaders. Charlie is Head Student, Nick is Team Captain. Both are now very popular. This is a change in their status to "more equal". The real sad part is not being able to spend as much time together in Nick's last year of High School, and foreshadowing the physical separation when Nick goes to Leeds and Charlie goes to Oxford or Cambridge a year later. But this doesn't mean that their separation will be final. It only means that they will be challenged to find a way to manage their time and their relationship to keep what they have together if that's what they want to do. It's only the shadow of sadness, not the confirmation of sadness yet to come.

The similarities between Nick's faces on this page and page 1414 are striking. It's good that Charlie has got him to at least acknowledge that he'll be sad, but he needs to allow himself to feel that, and not laugh it off. That it's okay to not feel okay, and to grieve the fact this era of their relationship is ending (well, they both need to do that). And for Nick it's also about acknowledging what lies ahead for him when he goes to Leeds and starts the journey of really finding out who he is without Charlie always by his side, and that this will sometimes be scary and terrifying. And I guess maybe there's an element of them both not wanting to burden the other. I can see Nick not wanting to put a downer on things when he thinks they should be celebrating all the cool and positive things in Charlie's life right now. And of course we all know Charlie does something similar in the Novella.

It's ok to be sad, sometimes (as strange as it sounds) it's even good to be sad, and acknowledging it is important. While I want to say Nick will just seep this aside and be fine, I can see it contributing to the questioning Nick has coming up of who is he without Charlie. But Nick is also right about how he will be fine, because he still has his passion for rugby, he still has Charlie and soon he will know who he is better, even if there is some sadness between now and then, it eill be worth it.

The fact that they are having these tender, inportant conversations . . . while dressed as a pirate and cowboy . . . is so hilarious and also so true to the teenage experience. I keep giggling when I remember that Hotdog Tao is still wandering around somewhere in the background. 😂

I don’t know how/if the Nick and Charlie narrative will be different in the comic, but I love that this is slowly setting up the reason Nick gets so excited about uni.

Hmmm...indeed! I love how we start with the ever so gentle, and so needed, close up of their finger hold (Alice, I hope you take the time to marvel at your artistic skills in drawing their hands, especially in the last two volumes, because damn🥹)...it seems like Nick is the one looking for grounding as his hand has the finger that is softly bending, kind of like he is hanging onto...something...Then we get the next two panels that are close ups of Nick, with a darker background which makes me really pay attention to the details of his expressions, and the first one HURTS. His eyes (including his pupils!) are wide and dilated, and to me, they capture a flash of the really vulnerable, insecure side of Nick (the one that he hides although I'm not convinced HE is really aware how much it even exists inside him yet). Charlie just put into words how Nick is actually feeling, and I think in that first close up, Nick really hears it. But, then, he falls back into his comfort zone of, " I'll be fine...just worried about you." As we have often seen, Nick is incredibly gifted with an empathy and understanding for others (and their issues and struggles, especially Charlie's!), but not so aware of his OWN self and his own issues and struggles. I suspect for most of his life he has actually felt like he WAS "fine." And honestly, he probably was, but somewhere along the way, fine became more of a "numb," not to Charlie or to his friends, and not numb to being able to give or receive love, but numb to his own inner voice (who seems to be whispering more and more to try to get Nick's attention). Something is brewing, softly but steadily, inside Nick. I think Charlie saw a glimpse of it too, but, it's not loud enough yet...and then we end the page with their hair having its own soft, gentle connecting touch as it always tend to do❤️‍🩹

Nnoooooo the rugby player in me is refusing to acknowledge the possibility of attraction on field! Team romance was always a huge no no and very much a spoken rule! I know this is a high school team inside a comic but gah my brain still thinks of all the ways it messes with the team dynamics when relationships aren’t parked at the door 😅 this is a very cute conversion I am loving every moment 🤗
