i think the little heart you draw sometimes when they kiss is one of my favourite small details ❤️ nick looks so lost when charlie turns away, this feels symbolic and foreshadowing for when they'll be long distance. and nick probably hasn't really processed that yet, he's realising more and more that (in his words) he doesn't really know who he is without charlie🥺

I don’t know if this is what’s coming up for Nick right now, but I got hit by a sudden wave of sadness just thinking about how they’ve already had their last rugby game, their last rugby practice together… and they didn’t even know it was for the last time. Ouch. Reminds me of all the last things during your final year of school… lots of tears shed by my high school senior this past May/ June as she experienced many last times (last choir practice, last golf match, last scout meeting). Alice, this is so real!

I think Nick is really thinking about that last comment, "I liked playing it with You", him specifically being the only reason Charlie joined. I can't figure out exactly what he's feeling or thinking right now, I believe it could be or is a mix of different things. Such as, the last year or so of them playing rugby together was all at Charlie expense just to make Nick happy. Maybe he feels he pressured Charlie into a sport he didn't really care for just to be liked or noticed. I feel it is most likely in relation to his chat with Elle earlier about uni, all the things they would do together, will Charlie still like them when they go long distance? Will Nick even like them, will Charlie be okay without Nick? "What other things did he do just for me, maybe there's other stuff he doesn't really like" are thoughts I can imagine Nick thinking in this moment. This scene is becoming increasingly interesting

The sadness in Nick’s eyes is heartbreaking 💔 think he is really contemplating how much life is going to change and how much he is going to miss their life together as it has become :( the closeness and daily contact - is he also wondering that with Charlie’s new found confidence and popularity he will move on without him? I have a feeling this storyline will be leading into the events of the Nick & Charlie novella. We've seen Charlie truly come into his own, but Nick isn't quite there yet. He's a huge people pleaser and tends to ignore his own feelings and needs in favour of making sure Charlie is doing okay. While that seems sweet at first and makes him look like the 'perfect boyfriend', this mindset isn't healthy and can lead to communication issues. One of the main catalysts for the fight in the novella is Nick and Charlie never having a proper conversation about Leeds and being long distance. I think Nick knows at this point that they need to talk about it, but is putting it off because he's afraid of upsetting Charlie or doing something that might harm their relationship. Nick is still figuring himself out and doesn't want to burst the perfect bubble of "we're Nick and Charlie, we'll be fine" because that means facing who he is on his own. The mantra is cute, but simply believing in a fairytale romance is not enough in the long run. I'm very excited (and slightly nervous haha) to watch this storyline play out!

First two panels are top tier kiss and so-in-love-it’s-almost-unbearable-to-watch gazes. Then the way you’re able to change Nick’s expression so quickly 🥺 I think it could be “so…how much time do you think Head Boy duties will take” or “so…how much time do you think we’ll have left for us?”.

wait hold on I did mention on an earlier page that nick would probably want to spend as much time with Charlie as possible during the last year he's still at truham, and that he therefore was a bit disappointed that Charlie would stop playing rugby, yeah? but he's trying to repress his sadness every time Charlie is around, which is probably why he acts like everything is perfect all the time during the N&C novella - he's managed to convince himself that everything is perfect too but as we've seen with charlie's mental health issues, repressing sadness will only make everything worse in the long run, and we all know what ends up happening in the novella tl;dr my brain is filled with angsty thoughts rn and I don't like it

Literally my thought as well. And if Nick gets some therapy he works on himself, but the conversation still doesn’t really happen. Therapy helps, but it’s not magically going to fix all the problems.

At first glance, those top two panels are just the CUTEST...Nick and Charlie are having a sweet, flirty kiss (and we know how "kissing is SO fun" for them), plus we have Charlie's hoop earring (doesn't it just really match with where he is in his self-confidence right now!), his curly hair being pushed up with the eye patch (goodness knows how Nick Nelson LOVES Charlie's hair), and my favorite, the heart in between them. I love the added detail that it is fully coloured and feels so full...like everything is whole and complete and "perfect"...but then, there are some subtle details that make me worry. As we look at the top 3 panels, we see Nick doesn't move much at all. I love that Alice perfectly aligned the borders of these panels so we can see this!. Charlie leans into him for the kiss, and while usually Nick would respond to such affection by also leaning into Charlie (even for a quick kiss!), here, his posture doesn't change...it's as if Charlie thinks the conversation ended, but Nick was still trying to catch up to his thoughts, and ends up kissing Charlie back reactively and not proactively. And, his little face in that third panel reminds me of when he did the uni tours and was all alone in the dorm rooms at night...it's his "something isn't right" face, but he hasn't yet been able to name the uncertain, anxious, scared, and honestly sad thoughts he has over future changes coming. In the very last panel, Nick just looks so SO tired. Is it from the party? Is it fatigue from trying to push down the inner voice whispers? Does he just want to go sleep next to Charlie and effectively procrastinate about thinking more (remember the blanket burrito with his college applications)? Sweet Nick. It's going to be okay....

When you love a mentally ill person, you are constantly balancing on a knife's edge. When things are good, you're afraid of ruining it, and when things are bad, you're afraid to make the situation worse. So you put on a mask that is sometimes difficult to take off or that only comes down for a moment. A moment that no one sees. And yes, I know it from personal experience

Yeah, but I think we have to remember that Nick’s people pleasing/masking tendencies (and resistance to introspection) aren’t necessarily all about Charlie. These are personality traits of his that predate meeting Charlie and have historically been *worse* in his other relationships, as Nick describes to Charlie in vol 5. It kind of frustrates me when people boil their dynamic and any potential conflict down to, “Being with a mentally ill person is difficult, Nick needs to walk on eggshells around Charlie because Charlie’s sick,” when there has been nothing in the text yet to suggest this is where he’s coming from right now. Nick explicitly denies that this is the way he feels about Charlie in vol 5. (This isn’t about your comment specifically, just something that sometimes frustrates me about the way some fans discuss Nick and Charlie’s relationship, with Charlie’s mental illness as the source of all problems. It feels a bit reductive and stigmatizing, and imo also disregards the wider context of Nick’s characterization - his turbulent upbringing with/without Stephane and David, an unsupportive social environment, etc.)

Absolutely. Nicks probably the *least* likely to act like this of all the people Charlie's close to. Because he's really LISTENED to him and been on the journey and understands this is the one thing Charlie's afraid of. And Charlie's one of the few people he feels able to remove the mask around, even if it's not all the time yet — he did it last chapter.

Ahh - well said - you, Alice and one page a day are killing me! I always felt like no matter what challenges Charlie faced he had Nick who had the perfect strengths to see him through. But now that Nick is struggling, he is my kryptonite and very special bean. Anxiety meter is dialing up as I wait for Charlie to notice as I feel Nick the empath would have clocked a similar disjoint with Charlie by now. Makes my tummy hurt 😢.
