This page feels like an echo of our chapter opener with a happy and mischievous Nick suggesting hanky panky to a nervous and distracted Charlie. But now school has begun and the election has been won and roles are reversed. In that absolutely stunning drawing of Charlie, he is smiling, open and relaxed and maybe on the verge of suggesting some intimate time with his boyfriend. Nick on the other hand, we see in a choppy series of from behind drawings, arms folded, unsure questions and general anxiety. Oh my heart - please Charlie begin to pick up on this. Nick, he is your safe space.

I find the last few pages very revealing because they remind me of something Aled said in the novella Nick & Charlie. Aled points out to Charlie that if Charlie really wanted to break up with Nick, he would accept it, but he would be heartbroken. I think the last few pages show a Nick who would probably be like Aled said.

However, it is obvious that he needs to open up to Charlie and can not keep putting it off- they have a pact - to always tell each other when they have something going on!! I guess he is feeling so many different things right now, that he doesn't even fully understand what he's feeling himself. Be he knows he's FEELING. Maybe navigating this all with a friend first would help, so he can get a clearer idea of how to express himself to Charlie. But yeah... he's not so good at that yet.

I remember in Nick and Charlie, Nick couldn’t talk right away because he didn’t know what he was feeling. It’s scary to open up to the person you’re having feelings about when you’re not sure what will ultimately come out of your mouth. I agree with people who have said it’s a smart idea to wait until a less tipsy time, and also to process these complex, conflicting feelings with a friend first. Nick needs another exhausting car trip with Tara and Elle to bring his guard down!

Charlie looks so sexy in that final 3/4 drawing! Strong, open stance, flirty grin - how do you make lines on a page so hot!! But poor Nick is folded in on himself around things he just can’t express. He doesn’t have the skills or the words, but it seems like there’s an inner knot of hurt & pain. Role reversal from earlier books. I want to hug them both… and find some way to help Nick process what he really needs & wants because I don’t think he can actually name his emotions right now. I get it - I often can’t either.

Idk why I’m not getting a sad vibe from Nick at all! Maybe I’m off base but it just seems like a low stakes scene that shows another layer of their relationship. I know Alice has it all planned out, so I could be entirely wrong, but I just see the scene as sweet.

I'm pretty sure if Nick Nelson is offering, "wanna dance or what," he actually means the "OR WHAT..." ESPECIALLY when omg, Charles Francis Spring turns around from the sink at looks at him...like THAT😍 I mean, talk about a total vibe of adoration mixed with just enough flirtatious yearning (look at Charlie's eyes and dimpled smile meant just for Nick!), and seeing the casual, confident, inviting power stance that Charlie takes..."OR" looks like the winning option! But (there is always a but), that first panel of Nick and his "..." is on this page for a reason too. I really appreciate that we are getting to see (through Nick) how mental health and a sense of self struggle can build up so slowly sometimes that you don't even know it's happening...we keep seeing little glimpses and moments captured where Nick is starting to sense that unsettling shift of energy inside him, making him feel like things are not right. But since it is a slow build and he has generally been "fine," I suspect Nick is going to have to experience a lot of these quiet energy shifts before something bigger happens and he can actually get some help. At some point, he will have to look back at his childhood AND face his fears about the future to be able to heal in the present. But he isn't there yet...so for now, Nick Nelson, go kiss your boyfriend, cause, he is too damn cute right now and he only has eyes for you❤️🫶
