I love that we're delving into the Nelson family history and dynamics a bit more. Chosen family is incredible, but the family you grew up with will also leave its mark. I think a lot of Nick's issues come from experiencing his parents' divorce at a young age and growing up with an absent father, an emotionally unavailable older brother and a mum who's trying her best but has her flaws too.

Tbh i would be here for it. Yes, he‘s a jerk but i don’t believe that’s his personality. I think it’s the broken heart because of the abandonment from their dad. Like Nick said in season 3: “there is a real family which want spend time with you.” Maybe David will realise family is more than parents although his mom is the best.

Absolutely agree Merel. Nick is where he is for many a reason. I suspect David is at an emotional bottom after his break up and we have seen him hurting from his father's absence. It is no mistake he is at his mother's house. They all may be ready to reach out to each other for some healing.

"I guess we'll see" carries so much resignation and quiet defeat...it's so hard to hear. I'm glad Alice chose to not show Nick's face here though...all we get are panels where it's him "going through the motions," after just feeling very intense emotion seconds ago...which is what we have been seeing for MONTHS with Nick...he is able to shut all that anger down by the time he finishes pouring his tea (what am I supposed to do? I saw mum's face...why can't David go live with dad, oh, that's right..Dad wouldn't follow through as usual...I wonder if David is even upset that he and Jess broke up. I would die if Charlie and I...Charlie...I have to tell him this, but I don't want to make him feel sad...okay..."hold Henry while I pour , will you, Mum?" oh, her face...she looks so tired...) His numbness to himself has grown so much that he can repress all this so quickly really makes me worried. And I think Sarah, distracted by David herself, is also talking to a Nick who she thinks is doing fine. I suspect she hasn't seen a lot of Nick ALONE lately. He has been WITH Charlie round their house for months, and we all know Nick is happier and more secure (even Sarah said it once, more himself👀) when Charlie is with him. So, I suspect Sarah is judging Nick's response (or Lack of!) on just this one very moment, so it doesn't seem so off to her. Then, Nick gets external reinforcement for "putting the family first" as he goes up the steps and sees the sweetest, most tender family moment captured on the wall. And, he continues on, stoic and expressionless both in the panels and in his world...(I still don't think here he is fully aware of the mask he keeps putting on...I think he still thinks he is doing the right thing (for others, that is) , but is pretty unaware of the pressure building internally (missing/leaving Charlie and finding his own personhood) and externally (with the unwritten personal statement and the WTF do I do for uni)💔 I love/hate this storyline...it's so good, Alice (and HBD!🥳)

Love that you're delving into nick's family dynamics because while his mum can be amazing she's also still human and learning and clearly the divorce had a lot of impact on nick himself (and his brother) and it doesn't surprise me that Nick unconsciously felt he had to supress his personality partly because how he grew up with fighting parents, a neglecting father and a defiant brother. Nick is certainly not happy but, he is kind and so mature beyond his years. We are learning of David's issues with relationships (including with his brother) . Hopefully, while David is home, he won't be able to ignore witnessing the loving trusting, tender, and lasting relationship Nick and Char share. Maybe, just maybe, some of David's hardened and icy personality will begin to chip away and he will let Nick, Char, and his mum show him how love really works. There is hope for David!

First of all, happy birthday! One of my other favorite queer authors (Paul Monette) was born today. He died in 1996, but I feel like you are carrying his torch and that he would be SO, SO proud of you and would have loved the webcomic and show. Anyway, onto the page. The picture really made me sad. At one point, I think they were really close, but the divorce ruined that. I love Sarah, but that doesn't mean she is perfect and may not have handled everything like she should have. For example, she kind of guides Nick but is definitely more hands-off than Jane. (a good thing.) . David may have needed a bit more of a hands-on parent. (I could be wrong, lol.). I'm really hoping that they can develop a nice brotherly bond. It may take a bit of struggle, but that is kind of the Heartstopper way. And I don't think that David and Nick need to be best friends, but I'm really close to one sibling, but not quite as close to the other. (but no hard feelings or resentments; we are just very different.). It is still really wonderful to talk about family stuff, laugh, and commiserate, with both of them and get their perspectives, and I want that for Nick. (and grudgingly David.)

Nick sees that picture and knows it’s his mother’s hope. He knows how much it must hurt to feel like her babies wouldn’t welcome this kind of togetherness now. He really is pulling a Charlie this year, keeping his own feelings (relatively) quiet in order to let everyone else’s worlds be “perfect.” But Nick is Nick, not Charlie, and I think instead of turning his feelings in on himself like Charlie did, he’s going to blow up and release those emotions on someone at some point. I kind of like that David has returned as an optional recipient of this! Who knew that David’s presence could come in handy one day??

Also, because turning his angst onto David, may seem more justified than turning it onto Charlie. It is WONDERFUL everything Charlie is doing. Plus, with the job, he is setting himself up for university. However, Nick has to learn that it's ok to be a bit upset about it, without him being a bad person and to talk to his friends (Tara , especially) about it. Not that I think David doesn't deserve some pushback, but I'm wondering if it may be for something that isn't even that offensive.

Maybe blowing up at David (who is the safest recipient, because Nick won't care if he hurts his feelings or ruins their relationship as a result) will lower the temperature inside Nick's brain and he'll be able to talk to his loved ones the way he should have been doing all along, without fear of exploding on them. If it has to happen, I hope it serves as a portal to better communication with the people he loves going forward!

I feel Nick's voice is tired, frustrated and resigned when he says I guess we'll see. There are years of hurt there that need to be addressed, and likely that hurts Sarah as much as it hurts Nick, if not more so. And seeing the picture that shows once they were happy together hurts so much, because it highlights everything that's gone wrong, even if we don't know for sure what happened. Ouch. I hope sarah does actually have a plan and isnt just leaving it to wishful hopeful thinking. Davids behaviour has been seriously toxic up til now, and hes getting to the age where if its not properly addressed hes going to get stuck in some terrible behaviour habits that harm people for life. And, sarah needs to be a proper mum, not just a nice mum. Id like to see her take homophobia properly seriously, it is a hateful belief not just banter. I think Nick needs to find a way with this also, not just tolerating being put down all the time, and being a nice guy keeping it together. Bullying within families is domestic violence, if kids dont grow out of it as children and keep on with it as adults, thats abusive.
