Classic behaviour from someone who likes control 🫤 Nick was trying to show concern, but David weaponized it to hurt Nick. I doubt he even realises he is doing it! One thing I love about Alice's Heartstopper (and I think she spoke about it in an interview) is that there is rarely if ever a redemption arc for such characters. What Charlie said in S2 to Ben...I hope you become a better person but I don't want to be around when it happens. Same with David. Sure, he might have abandoned issues bcoz of his Dad (slS2 & S3 showed it a bit) and now Jess. But that doesn't give him the right to be horrible especially to Nick.

I appreciate the new pages but I just can’t take much more of this story arc with Nick. Why the torture of him? No Charlie time, Charlie not noticing the pain Nick is in and now this? People can swear up and down David can have a redemption story but not every person can be redeemed. His favorite past time has always been the cruelty to Nick and also recently to Charlie. Estranged siblings often happen. I’m just truly unhappy with this storyline. The pain of Nick is just a lot. I’m probably in the minority needing some bit of happiness and a Charlie cuddle for Nick.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not entirely sure yet! What I do know is that some of the motivations/emotions/actions in the N&C novella literally don't align with the Heartstopper version of Nick and Charlie and wouldn't make sense to include in the comic as they'd simply feel out of character.

thanks for speaking on this. I think it makes completely sense. I enjoyed N&C novella but I can very much see how it’s a stand alone somehow compared to the comics. I see how it wouldn’t fully make sense with how the storyline is going so I am excited to see where you take us with Vol 6, I admire you being bold to go with your guts and making it your own as always even with the pressure from fans, I can imagine comes along sometimes. I hear you, I find it hard too but I think this is one of the drawbacks of choosing the Patreon one page a day. It might feel really drawn out, but it’s not actually been that many pages, and Alice has told us just how long Volume 6 will be. So yes, this is a tough stretch for Nick, but if we were reading this in a completed graphic novel, this would have a much different feel. I know it’s so easy to analyze each page in detail when we only get a page a day but things could still be a lot worse for Nick, there is no over the top drama, just lots of little things that indicate a tough stretch for Nick, which I think is perfectly realistic in life.

And while I do not condone or appreciate David's behavior and want to fully bubble wrap Nick because he is also in a really fragile place right now, I cannot help but think about how David got here....to being this dolt of a guy who cannot even bother to look up from his phone when asked a "I'm concerned about you, are you okay" question by his caring brother. I need a Nellie growl and Henry glare stat! BUT..."What happened to Jess? " David cannot even acknowledge the possibility of answering, of owning his hurt. They LIVED together, for goodness sake. There had to have been GOOD times. ..you know that has to hurt now, somewhere in there. It has to hurt just like it hurt when their dad left. David was at a really sensitive age when the divorce happened, where maybe he felt like HE did something wrong, that HE wasn't good enough to make his dad stay, and, as we have learned, Stephane has reinforced time and again that neither of the boys are WORTH his effort to visit, to show up for birthdays, to call...David clearly has a proclivity towards being a schmuck, and add in an unresolved feeling of avoiding thinking, like ever, about the rejection by his dad, so we have a hurt little boy who has grown up pushing everyone else down, especially NICK, in an effort to claim for himself any nugget of attention that Stephane might happen to share ...and oof. We have current David. Hurt people hurt people. I don't know if he can change. I hope so, but I do know that it isn't Sarah or Nick's job to get him there. David will have to decide he wants a relationship with Nick, and then do the work. Sarah is, however, responsible for protecting Nick from any imbecilic, homophobic, nastiness David throws out...that's the line for me. I want to understand David, but he better get his act together and leave our golden retriever alone...

Nick has such an empathetic character and does know that family gives a shit. The walk up those stairs after looking at the family picture when we did not see his face must have taken metaphorical years. I suspect his own turmoil makes him sensitive to what the loss of Jess must feel like. I predict words of comfort forthcoming which may not be immediately received well by David but may lay the groundwork for detente. Hopefully that in turn helps Nick's own healing.

could you slightly alter the motivations/actions/emotions to fit this version of nick and charlie? my initial thought process was that since charlie has been busy with school and work, and unable to be with nick more than he usually is, nick sinks into himself. as a way to keep his mind off of his true feelings, he applies to unis (leeds) and starts to slowly become obsessed with the thought of college. like in the book we know that nick is constantly bringing up leeds and going away, what he’s gonna decorate his dorm with, what classes he’s gonna take, going shopping in preparation for moving out and setting up his dorm. so we can possibly get to see the start of all that bc it’s a way for him to put his emotions aside. and apart from nick, we already have established that charlie is worried about nick moving away to college away from him and the fact that they would have to go long distance. i’m sure charlie’s gonna start to have thoughts on what it means when they’re apart when nicks at school, and what that ultimately means for their relationship being long distance. plus this comment that david made about relationships eventually ending, will start to have nick thinking on the same wavelength as charlie. so that right there could be what leads them to the story of the nick and charlie novella itself. plus this puts a different spin on why nick and charlie are feeling a certain way, why they do/say the things that they do, and even what their motivations are. i’m sure there’s a way to go about it while still making it feel in character. but whatever you chose to do, im excited to see!!

@Maddi This is definitely possible (and I hope to do something like this if we get a final season of the show) but the other thing with the comic is that I don’t want to have to spend 150 pages re-telling a story I’ve already told before! I only have a certain number of pages left and I want to use them all to expand and deepen the Heartstopper story, not lead towards a story I wrote 9 years ago pre-Heartstopper.

I can imagine it's a tough line to walk. There are lots of people who read the comic but haven't read the novella, and you can't really explain the entire N&C storyline in a couple of pages like you were able to do with This Winter.

I love the novella, but I also wouldn't mind if it existed in a slightly different timeline from the comic. It can be its own thing. You shouldn't feel pressured to write the comic in a certain way just so it fits with the plot of a story you wrote years ago.

Jasollie you’re right that it would be better if it was the complete book. I think part of my problem is I was in a relationship 30 years ago where he started to pull away from me and didn’t see what it was doing to me. The hurt on Nick’s face, Alice is so brilliant at how she draws it. Then David, who I will argue to my dying day is not redeemable, comes home with his evil attitude and words. Too many stressors can send anyone into a tailspin and maybe I’m just too sensitive.

I guess another possibility is he entered a relationship for the wrong reasons. Perhaps he didn't love this Jess but she had a crush on him and he loved her attention or loved the fact he was in a relationship and they went through the motions for a while until the relationship inevitably broke down. Just as Nick is in a relationship that is unusually mature and serious for his age, perhaps David has only ever had short, high-school style relationships that don't go anywhere. Perhap he hasn't found the right person yet (assuming he's alloromantic) or subconsciously entered relationships for the wrong reasons and not yet found or let himself experience the kind of intimacy that comes with it.

I think Nick already came to realise that David's behaviour was a result of his own internal problems and stopped taking it to heart. Unlike David, he's also found a sort of acceptance that their Dad isn't likely to be a father to them. We saw this at the Spring-Nelson dinner. That said, Nick's under so much stress and struggling right now, David's mere presence is simply a big annoyance in his life he can REALLY do without. But like you say, let's hope David is the catalyst that helps all the surprised anxiety about his future that's been bottled up be expressed somehow
