Hi Alice!!! I just wanted to say that i love heartstopper!! It’s my comfort book/show🥹❤️🫶

Summer Hales

He just doesn't get it. 😔

Samu

Noooo

Thira

”Not cool!” we all say in union

Sakura

That’s the thing about schools they welcome everything else but not actual groups that would help..

Philippe Vallotti

If we did that we should do it for EVERYONE so it's best to just do nothing and let everyone be miserable ✨️🥰

Leland

Boooooooo (not to Charlie - Charlie is right)

milo !

happened at my school unfortunately 😖 poor charlie

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

The headteacher ended up disappointing us. BOOO indeed. It's okay, Charlie. Don't give up. Try and try again. You know this is important and is a really great idea. You can do it!

abbie

poor charlie, he just wants to create a safe place for everyone.

Chris Mackenzie

Misogyny with a little dash of gaslighting on the side… jerk! Probably thinks that fights at the school are ‘boys being boys, nothing to see here’.

Barb

Charlie's dissappointed eyes🥺...he was so eager with this goal🫶🏻

Ania W.

Shame on you, Mr. Headteacher. Boooo indeed 😡 Have a nice day Alice😊

Desi23

Ohh my boy! He is really sad right now, but he has a support team next to him to cheer him up!

Maisie

Booooo indeed :(( oh this is so sad. You have got this though, Charlie!!

OSM

Don't give in Charlie. It's time to gather all the local gays for a fight

Katie H

The teacher not taking ownership or responsibility to make a change is really upsetting, but it happens a lot 😟 I'm proud of Charlie for standing up for what he believes in🫶

Loveislove

Wow - way to identify all the school's weaknesses. What exactly is going to change in a few months within a school year - more staffing? That's unlikely. But attitude and student mobilization can. Something tells me this head teacher is about to be challenged and I think a possible leader is one Nicholas Nelson.

Dionne Lakey

Hmm how about the current resources used to combat bullying and sexual assault in UK schools that are insufficient and ineffectual - are instead funnelled into these groups. Maybe getting the students involved in issues that affect them is better than what hasn't been working so far.

2catlovers

This is where Charlie needs to say “86% of this school wanted me as Head Boy so that I could help reduce bullying. Therefore, the majority of students want this as I specifically campaigned on my own experience of bullying as a gay student!” - and then he needs to start the club with or without permission from the head.

MJ

🫂❤️ I do feel for teachers who don't have a lot of resources, but wait and see won't solve anything! There won't suddenly be more resources or time without any intentional changes. I'm interested to see how Charlie overcomes this! ❤️ 🍂

EllieRLM

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !

eva cuervo

Excuses, excuses and more excuses....and unfortunately It is real.😡

Merel

Oh Charlie :(( He had everything worked out to the details, of course he's feeling down 🫂

Charlie

Sadly this seems all too real. 😢

Sarah Jacobs

Ugh this is so real and so awful and such an accurate representation of old boomer thinking. Charlie, don't stop fighting my guy ❤️‍🩹

Sulagna Maitra

Politics 101- who gets what when and how? 😔 Scarce resources, many demands. How we prioritize and what we fund shows what and who we value the most 🥺 I love that Charlie wants to protect everyone ❤️ The way he say- "maybe we should! Misogyny is pretty rampant" 😅

Merel

"What's next? You want to make sure EVERYONE feels welcome at this school? Pffff..."

Emmy 🩷💜💙

YOU KNOW MAYBE WE SHOULD MAKE EVERYONE FEEL WELCOME!?!

Caitlin

What a let down for Charlie 😔 A part from sports, my school had no extracurricular clubs. Do UK schools tend to have these now? And are they usually supervised by teachers? I suppose they would have to be

Loveislove

Charlie may be momentarily down for now but has more spine and spirit than Mr. Maybe - he'll be back. It's frustrating when the people in power are bystanders. Charlie just needs a moment to regroup with a plan and allies.

Merel

Charlie looking progressively more defeated on this page... I can't handle his sad little face 😭

Rosie💕

poor guy; he’s like a tiny deflated balloon in that last panel

Stephen Berry

Time for Charlie to play politics!!!

Nikki

Maybe Charlie should just create an Outcasts club - for everyone who feels like their needs and identities aren’t being acknowledged by the school! Queer people, bullied kids, nerds, video gamers, drama geeks, science geeks, list goes on… Charlie will get his moment, I’m sure 🤞☀️

Merel

If the Headteacher first says it's impossible, then why is he willing to revisit it in a few months? He just doesn't feel like dealing with it right now. You can't let this 16yo be the sole champion of change at the school, do your job!!

Harriet Echo

FFS. But also realistic representation of what would occur! Absolutely adoring Charlie more than ever rn. You’re our hero!!!

Nicky Van den Bosch

Ugh! This is some bs excuse of the headmaster "where do we draw the line, bla bla bla"! There are enough teachers who are willing to put the extra time for these clubs in Heartstopper! Get the teachers behind you Charlie and the headmaster will have to fold! You got this!

Ada Suzany

I believe in Char, he will find a way to make it through

Chris

Sad faces 😔 too much to handle I can’t wait for some improvements for them they deserve it so much

Loveislove

Absolutely Charlie needs to recruit teacher/adult support for this. The head teacher is counting on Charlie giving up so he doesn't have to bother doing anything or ruffling any feathers. He is, in fact, bullying Charlie. This is how the school culture is the way it is. However, if Charlie were to reveal this roadblock to certain teacher allies - he is going to find very different attitudes and energies.

Oscar Viklund

Skip the teachers bit - problem solved!

Justin S.

Wondering where you’re taking this story bit, Alice! Charlie will figure out something … time to use your voice!

Diana

Thinking this results in Mr. Ajayi and Mr. Farouk coming out at school...

Adam

He needs to float the idea to other students and get thoughts from them and make it into a movement. If nothing else, they need to at least offer sanctuary spaces for kids. He definitely shouldn't give up because a teacher who is part of a bureaucracy is likely told by people above him that it can't be done.

Elspeth Fougere

🤮 old men like that.. sure we have all these clubs, fund teachers and equipment and projects and space and time, but we cant do your club right now. This is so so so common in so many schools! 😭😫 Not good enough!! 💔

Audrina

BOOOOO indeed 😭

Audrina

Charlie's sad little face 😭

Ann-Marie Still

Time for Charlie to enlist Mr Farouk. One look from him in the headmasters direction and the LGBTQIA Society will be up and running in no time.

Ciara

His poor little face, definitely time to assemble the troops and fight for it!

Allison Drevich

Alice, in an interview you were talking about Volume 6 and saying how you were concerned "nothing" would happen, and it wouldn't be as ...exciting (paraphrasing, can't recall exactly what you said)? This storyline is so huge! And purposeful! Ugh it's so good and I can't wait to see where you take it. You're amazing.

Jenny Delcher

In my old school in France (some 35 od years ago), we could create any club we wanted, but they had no budget and they were managed by pupils. Some clubs had only 1 pupil, but all were given a space in the school during lunch breaks.

Lolli98

Charlie 's sad little face in the last panel breaks my heart.😔 He put so much effort in his Pride Club plans! And what does Mr. "I don't want to put any effort in changing things for the better" do?! He is disillusionating Charlie!😡 But he is not gonna give up. Time for his friends and Nick to encourage Charlie to ask the good teachers for help!

Crow_pose24

Poor Charlie, he's putting so much effort in finding ways to keep his promises... His little face breaks me, I want to give him a hug!

Nathalie

Okay this is a really random question but I was wondering if nick and Charlie sometimes stayed over at Charlie’s house bc we only saw they at nick’s but I guess bc Charlie has a single bed it is nicer at nick but idk

Jeffrey Ricker

I know that in this instance the teacher is using that last reason as an excuse, but here in the US teachers (and elsewhere, I wouldn’t be surprised) take on a lot of extra work that they aren’t compensated for. It’s a real problem and contributes to burnout. (The rest of his argument, of course, is 💩.)

Caiterz

Such BS!!

ucfnurse

Adversity builds ideas and a movement!!!☺️😊👏❤️🩷🧡💜☀️🌈🌼💥✌️🕊️☮️

Kristen

Gosh Headmaster…why don’t you TALK to your staff…you might find they WANT to do this and I’m pretty sure, the children’s wellbeing is your responsibility…so let’s revisit now! Poor Charlie! Don’t give up Char!

Kaila K

Do it anyway, Charlie! Guerilla style! They can't stop a group of people from hanging out together. Mr. Ajayi would totally support that

Chloe ♡

teachers always try and make it about everyone else….. go charlie! don’t listen to him you will get that club created!

KimS

Where is Darcy’s anti-homophobia cheese when you need it?!

Faye

If it’s because of girls not having anything they would if the club was allowed but Charlie don’t give up on it!

toneelspeler

really love the double parallel drawing of charlie in the last few panels!

Jordan

Charlie is always the most empathetic and kind sweet boy - to recognize that misogyny is also a big problem. Ally to everyone 💜

mikecamer

C’mon, Charlie! Utilize your safe space in the Art room at lunch to make this happen with Mr Ajai’s help.

Beam Bugge

boo, everyone throw tomatoes at this guy

Steven

As much as I hate it, and don’t care for this teacher, he’s, unfortunately, got a point as well. It would require resources that for so many schools ARE often stretched thin. On the flip side, isn’t this a private school? Resources are usually much better there. Either way, I bet Charlie finds a workable solution to the problem.

Brittney

Keep fighting Charlie, don't give up! I also love how Nick already knows something is up

Carrie Lindley

I wonder if the head teacher’s hesitation is really about the logistics he cites here (and his own personal biases), or if he knows there will be pushback from parents, school governors/ board members. It will be much easier for Charlie to overcome the opposition if it’s the head’s own personal decision. If the community is stacked against it as well, then the head would be risking his job (which I’m guessing he won’t do). Good luck to Charlie! And if you have any helpful tips, Alice, please share… because if I knew how to solve that kind of opposition, there wouldn’t be 92 books banned by my school district. 😡 Ultimately, my daughter set up a way to provide access to banned books outside of our schools. It’s obviously not the same, but it’s better than nothing. Charlie could always start an off campus pride club, but hopefully that won’t be necessary!

Steven

Okay, thanks. I wasn’t sure in the UK. So, the resources thing is likely a valid problem, unfortunately, though it feels more like the teacher just doesn’t want to bother as well.

Glenn

Typical beaurcratic claptrap. Anytime some new and different idea is proposed, the powers that be have to be dragged in kicking and screaming.

Sarah Duzynski

Don't give up Charlie. Truham needs a Pride Club.

Julie

Maybe he could suggest a broader scope for the club, to address the teacher’s concern about every identity wanting to have their own club. At my daughter’s school, she’s in the “Diversity & Inclusion Club”, which she says really is mostly just the queer kids. It’s a safe space for everyone, though, which I think is great.

Hannah Howden

No making Charlie feel small 😩 welcome to the world kid, change takes gumption, guts and time. We need the people who make it happen ❤️‍🩹

Alyse Nicole

Unfortunately as a teacher myself, he is very much correct for many reasons.😩😫😩 I can already see the outcry for a million more clubs after this one starts up for both the boys and the girls schools. There for sure won’t be enough teachers who can facilitate these clubs, they will start working overtime with no pay and eventually get sick of it, and then parents will complain that their kid is being discriminated against because they can’t have 5 clubs they want, then all clubs will be pulled and none will exist. There just aren’t enough resources in regular public schools for clubs like these. Ugh I’m frustrated just thinking about the logistics of this and I don’t even have to deal with it.

Nils

Hmm I know this is unpopular but I can see where this is coming from. I'm not agreeing with this but he isn't totally wrong.

Alyse Nicole

As a teacher myself, I guarantee that while they would definitely want a safe space for student created they for sure would agree about the logistics of a ton more clubs being impossible to manage.

aliceoseman

One of my closest friends is a secondary school teacher and she’s always struggled to get extra curricular clubs and activities off the ground 😞 there just isn’t the time and funding available for state schools 😞

Katrina

Booooooo! Mr Shannon You got this Charlie! Put up a fight! Do not back down! At my school we have diversity and inclusion! So I know you can do this! Charlie’s face in the last panel hurts me sm he just wants the school to be a safe space for everyone

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

It is sad to know that he wants to make a good change for the school and his opportunities are closed💔😭😔

CinD

The way his little face gets sadder each frame 😭 I know it’s definitely not going to be an easy rode but this is Charlie Spring and I believe in him, he has faced harder challenges in his past! Maybe they could do a fundraiser? Possibly using Queer Intentions?

Button

Time to rally the squad and entire school and force his hand!! You can do it Charlie. We know you have it in you!!

Chris Provan

Time to rally the troops, show the headmaster the demand for a Pride Club! How much benefit it will bring and not be a distraction for the teacher in the advisory role. You can do this Charlie! We believe in you.

Adriane Tanjutco

I love this page and how it’s opening a convo on underfunding for extracurriculars like affinity clubs

Evergreen

Uggh if I had a dollar for every time I’ve run up against the “We don’t have the resources to make our institution equitable” argument…well, then I would have a lot of resources.

Evergreen

Also youth ARE a resource! If you don’t have the staff for it, train your 17 and 18-year-olds! I will always maintain that one reason youth are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis is because we don’t let them have a sense of meaningful purpose and role in their community until they graduate anymore. Locking capable, creative, compassionate young people up in a school building with no purpose but to serve as sponges for information is a recipe for depression and anxiety. Let them lead!

Shannon Funt

What resources do you need to host a club? Can they be self sustaining (fundraisers) and self running (we’re talking about motivated teenagers)? Teachers love to connect with kids on this level/ they want to be mentors outside of the classroom - is the issue that legally they need to be paid if they sponsor a club outside of school hours? I feel like the head teacher has a really low bar for what he thinks students and teachers are capable of. What’s the worst that could happen? People lose interest and the club disbans? Another club starts up bc they were inspired and you have even more inspired youth and teachers spending quality time with each other? Feels really lovely. If the kids want it and they have a teacher who is happy to sponsor the club, I guess I don’t see the issue?

Shannon Funt

I’d love to understand more… If there’s not a teacher available who’s willing or able to put in the extra time for a club, then isn’t that just a club not being able to meet the requirement for getting up and running? (Is the school obligated to pay a teacher for being involved in a club?) If there’s student interest, and teacher interest, then what is the issue? What resources need to be available? Thank you!

rickettyuncles

My son’s high school had a GSA club—gay-straight alliance. Maybe it ought to be called QSA to sound even more inclusive, but at least the concept pushes back against the principal’s worry the club would be too specialized

Mareike

Go ask Mr Ajayi, he'll be in and support you! 🙌

Nick Orbe

Sounds like the school I went to🤬

Kristen

I 100% understand, I’ve been in the school system and teaching for 15 years. But maybe leave it up to the students who want to have a club to find a teacher willing to support them. If they find it, and it’s appropriate, then they could have their club. If they need money, they’ll have to fundraise. However, I live in the US, so I don’t know rules as red tape from the UK. I just hope the headmaster will look into it and not just brush it off. Being a teacher is hard, but being a kiddo is hard too! ❤️🍂

Scott Whittall

Well Charlie boy, there is more than one path to the final goal. As my favorite LGBTQ comedian, Lily Tomlin, says "The road to success is always under construction". LOL. You've tried the solo direct route, now it is time to enlist recruits. Every school club requires a teacher sponsor. I see a visit with Mr. Ajayi, Mr. Farouk, and Coach Singh, in your near future. And it just so happens, the love of your life is the captain of the rugby team. It always helps to have other school leaders supporting your cause. Once you have your brigade assembled, forge a new attack plan. The Head Teacher needs to be reminded of the traumatic bullying you (and others) have experienced under his watch. It's high time he supports a safe haven for any student who is in need of support, inclusion, and an invulnerable surrounding. Head up, Char. Prepare for the next battle as only you can.

arlo🧞

charlie looks so sad ☹️

Nicole

Time to make your own group!

RCM

Poor Charlie🥺...again, the Head Teacher is thinking about all the POTENTIAL issues of "everyone" wanting to (suddenly) have their own club (which IS part of his job here but leaves him in a headspace where he cannot think outside the state school system box for creative ways to make this happen!), and he still dismissively keeps his eyes closed this whole time...whether it's from fatigue from his own history of futilely fighting the system, or from having to say no to something he would like to see at Truham now, or simply to not have to look Charlie in the eye, I'm not sure. Whatever the reason, we see a progressively darkening background behind Charlie as his positivity and hope starts to wane (I so love his last attempt "Well, maybe we SHOULD!") before the reality of "NO, not now, but let's revisit" sets in. The panel where the Headteacher (I cannot remember what the final decision was on his last name) hands Charlie his proposal back is so heartbreaking💔...the view from behind the Headteacher's shoulder that Alice chose to capture here makes Charlie looks so small, as if he is going back in on himself as he (shell shocked and still processing) looks over his written proposal in a "what did I do wrong, what did I miss here" way. It's like all of his confidence gained from the support of almost the whole school's vote for Head Boy has been (temporarily) lost, and he is carrying a weight of personal and (presumably in his mind) collective let down and failure😞And, then, in the bottom panel, it's lunchtime...Nick is holding a sandwich (but clearly worried about Charlie), Tao is chewing, and Charlie is in his head...mulling over and reliving the conversation over and over...(and I'm over here like hope is not lost, Charlie! Talk to your bee hive for ideas! Start a petition, recruit teachers, find ways it won't cost precious resources...just don't give up, Charlie, don't give up!🤞).

RyGy

Poor Charlie. Come on Paris Squad! Get in there and fight for this!

Jennifer Paddock

Poor Charlie! And Poor Head - his concerns are unfortunately valid. This kind of doom loop is why I got out of teaching. You're just so hamstrung by so many rules and lack of funding and lack of support - ugh. I hope Charlie keeps fighting and finds a way!

Jenna

That’s booooshit. It could be a group run FOR the students and BY the students. All they need is a room, a space. Students WILL rally behind this… A petition. They need a petition. And yes, I feel that there DO need to be spaces of inclusivity for ANY student body who sees the need to find support or visibility among their peers, especially in high school. As long as the group does not veer into hate territory and they can partially support the group through some of their own (creative) resources. Why not?? Give them the space!!

Lodge

Mr. Shannon is such a coward.

camelotcrusade

Leaders only have so much political capital, and they won't spend it on every fight, even if you'll spend all of your own on the same cause. It's disheartening when you realize a leader you respect won't spend theirs for you, but it happens all the time in life (especially in business).

kenzie !

L Mr. Shannon.

Gregory Toner

Don’t give up Charlie you are the engine of CHANGE 💖

Larisa

Seriously booo 😑

Katie🐝

NOOO if anyone can make it happen it’s our Charlie boy!!

syd

BOOOOOOO

Norah Streeter

Is this typical in the UK? I teach in an American high school and we have a Black Student Union, Gay Straight Alliance etc etc

Martine Scarabea

As a teacher I can relate - sadly... The situation is the same here. I agree with everything you wrote. I actually wanted to run a club for queer kids at secondary school and was told it's not possible 😓

Alyse Nicole

As much as I love that idea, in most places that is illegal. You can’t have children facilitating children and it’s usually mandatory for there to be at least one staff member per a certain number of students (the number varies) when on school property. That’s US standards anyway. Not sure about the UK but I assume it’s similar.

Murgy

I'm getting the feeling that Charlie is about to do something about it without the head's help to prove him wrong. Perhaps at the prodding of Nick or Tao. Because it is important not just to Charlie, but many people at Truham. Don't give up Charlie. Still expecting to see Ms Singh verbally eviscerate the Head at some point.

Evergreen

It's so true. Making this type of student leadership possible would mean changing how we as a culture think about the ability of teenagers to safely do certain things unsupervised, in a safe space - especially when there are well-trained, responsible students involved as leaders. I know it's pie in the sky, but it's a dream I have. Maybe someday...

Dave

Our schools are over stretched and under resourced. School some kids I know go to have a gay headmaster and so he’s happy to take any heat for letting them have their own little queer club. Other schools not so much

Dave

The big sigh, the justification, this will be so familiar to a lot of us. While schools are overstretched and under resourced, clearly homophobic bullying is a massive problem at Truham. But Sir, if we make things better for the queer kids why can’t we make them, better for all of us? Well quite

Neenie

I felt a little bad about my first reaction being “booooooooooo” until I saw that is Alice’s as well. The change in Charlie’s face from “I can handle this” to “disappointed.png” is devastating

Neenie

Nice point about the perspective. I noticed it but couldn’t quite verbalize.

David C Witkin

"Maybe we should" is the only correct reaction to this kind of institutional cowardice and inertia. This is the time when Charlie and his friends will learn the lesson that administrators, bureaucrats and even teachers who know them personally will actually betray them in order to just get by and not rock the boat. This is the time when Charlie and Company will learn that their own best advocates are themselves. It's time they united with their friends on the issue of Social Group Clubs and stood up for themselves. Even if it puts the timid, do-nothing Administration to absolute shame!

K Lyn

Maybe we should is so Charlie. And me hard core relating right now 😅

NellieSayzBork

Time to rally your fellow students, Charlie! Maybe a walkout will show the faculty that you see their homophobia and won't stand for it!
