Irem7

Yes Charlie, you can do it

Caro

OOOOH, the boy with glasses isn’t alone!!!!

arlo🧞

the shading around their heads is opposite, like the boys is internal and not fighting back, but charlie’s is external and read to fight. beautiful work💚

Barb

I really really really keep my fingers crossed🤞🏻🤞🏻 to see this Hey! in (hopefully) S4, he'd nail it, and his facial expressions >>>

Desi23

Charlie head boy getting ready to verbally murder some bullies! Yeah!

Jo S

Good for you Charlie! Proud of you 👍👏

laura

there’s something so emotional about charlie being someone he wished he had as a kid, he’s making the change and not letting the cycle repeat itself… i better not think too much about this or gonna start crying 😭

reece

Omg for a sec in the first frame, it looked like Christian in the sweater! but up close you can tell it’s not him but for a moment I was scared he was picking on the other boy 😭

Lisa

He’s a man on a mission. His friends have already irked him and now these bullies are taking the cake. They’re going to feel his wrath

Crow_pose24

Loving strong and confident Charlie❤️

Oliver

LETS GOOOOOO

Chloe ♡

charlie watching a young kid go through exactly what he did all those years ago and he’s about to bring the words of his head boy speech to life and sort it so no one experiences what he did 🤍

Merel

I love how the 'Hey.' is written with a period. Charlie is not shouting or getting emotional, he's authoritative in the way a Head Boy should be. I'm so proud of him.

Katya818

Go Charlie! Verbally tear them apart like we all know you can!

Roarrrry

Yes Charlie!!

Anne-Lise Torre

Oh confident Charlie 🥹 You rule my guy !

Katrina

Charlie has come a long way in many ways but especially in terms of confidence. Younger him would have never been able to stand up for someone else being bullied. That hey is so firm and shows that confidence and it shows that he is not messing around and he means it and is immediately putting a stop to the behavior. We love you so much Charlie Spring you are an amazing head boy!! I love that we get to see the boy with the glasses again he was so adorable when we first met him.

Audrina

The confidence it takes to face bullies when you've been bullied yourself.. 🥺 so proud of Charlie 💖

carly

Charlie going from having his own bullying stopped by sixth formers to the sixth former interrupting bullying oh I’m soooo proud of him :( <3

K

Yeah 🥺🥺🥺 Same boy that looked at Nick and Charlie holding hands on the first day 🥺

Merel

All of this happening in front of a sign about anxiety 😭 The details are incredible

BEL

SuperCharlie to the rescue…

Shin__

Don’t mess with Charlito 😡

Justin S.

You tell ‘em, Char!

Uh oh! Hear comes the head boy! Go get ‘em Charlie! 😏

melly2oo

The CONFIDENCE 😭🥲 go off KING 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

Merel

The tiniest bit of Charlie's Head Boy badge being visible in the third panel, indicating his position and authority in this moment... Chef's kiss 🤌

Hannah

Omg why am I crying

ACxo

The best head boy

Carly Louise

It's glasses boy! Protect him at all costs!

Beam Bugge

I wonder what this bullying is about...

Merel

Charlie becoming the person he needed when he was younger... Don't mind me I'll be crying in the corner 🥲

Claire

Go Charlie, go. Fellow students will be a lot more supported than Charlie was now. This is about to prove that Charlie is as much a Knight in shining armour as Nick is. Take note Aled.

Laura LeBlanc

Hooray!! Love confident Charlie!!

Hunter

No one gets bullied on his watch

Bela Francoeur-Schug

Alice- this feels so healing to me right now. One of the awful things about growing up in a small-ish town was the way people would treat you like someone anonymous- that they didn’t know you- when you knew that they did. Even your background characters have a history, that you recognize and trace through the story. You give your characters so much humanity and this is why we are such devoted fans.

Molly Goat

Oh heckin' no. Go Charlie!!!!!

Niamh Gibbons

Oh hell no YES CHARLIE! 👏👏

Ada Suzany

THIS IS OUR CHARLIE!!!

KayKay

Yes! I’m so proud of you Charlie! Alice this is beautiful and so wonderful to see Charlie thriving. 🥰

Jennifer Berry

yes charlie !!!! i needed someone like charlie in school .

mikecamer

Alice's ability to render subtle body language cues in a simplistic illustration style never ceases to amaze me. The posture differences tell you everything you need to know. Brilliant!

Lolli98

Oh no, the baby gay!😯 Don't mess with headboy Charlie!😠

Dionne Lakey

Oh this kid has been there since they walked into school on day one of Volume 6 and I'm so excited to get to see Charlie mentor a year 7 kid. Also, this is why Form room has a mix of all year groups in it. It's so that the older kids can all look out for the younger kids in their form. Also, reminded that older kids are the ones who stopped Charlie getting bullied when he was in year 9. Passing it forward.

Maisie

Yes Charlie! You tell them!

CinD

BE the change you wish to see in the world Head Boy Charlie! 🥹

Carrie Lindley

Step 1: deal with bullies. Step 2: comfort student. Step 3: knock on the head teacher's door to demand he "revisit" the Pride Club. Charlie is about to have himself a day!

Ciara

Yes Charlie!!!!!

Allegra2346

GET THEIR ASSES HEAD BOY

CinD

You know this scene reminds me a lot of when Harry was bothering Nick at the bonfire and Charlie told him to piss off. I just release maybe a part of Charlie saw himself in Nick at that moment… 😭

JennyB

Yes Charlie!!!!

lisa mcarthur

go char he is our head boy that care about so many people we need samething like this in real life at the schools

Diana N

Charlie is not going to let a younger boy get bullied on his watch! History will not be repeated! Go get em Charlie!

Robert

Good one Charlie. Yet another example to prove the Head wrong.

a

oh he’s not having it

Robert

I agree but it might be that they might not be bullying the boy for being gay but for another reason. That said having safe rooms is still a brilliant idea. Charlie will also know who the bullies are.

Molly

YES! Go Charlie!!!! (Also, I've been wondering if this younger student would come back!)

Nikki

I’m sure that’s the kid from several pages ago who was looking at Charlie in awe… had a feeling it might be him. Go Charlie, you absolute superhero!

Claudine

Charlie is such an inspiration. In the same environment where he was bullied so much and felt so down, now taking control and tackling bullies and trying to help students who are being bullied. He has made so much progress. We are all so proud of you Charlie!

Evergreen

I knew it would be our little friend with the glasses! 💚 I can’t wait to see Charlie in action. I love the artistic touch of the same squiggly lines coming from Charlie that are coming from the boy being bullied. Such a simple but effective indicator of Charlie’s empathy and ability to relate to what’s happening. And an indicator that his trauma is triggered by seeing this - but this time, he’s about to transform it into something that helps him help others. Such a beautiful arc. 🥹

Jessica Sloan

Ohh no you don’t! Get ‘em Charlie!!!!

Frances

Charlie to the rescue 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 I feel like a proud mom 🥹

Julie

Oh yay, someone’s about to get a (verbal) ass kicking!

Elfi

YES, GO CHARLIE!

Koko

JOOO LETS GOOOOO CHARLIE

Evergreen

Arlo, great catch! I mentioned in my comment that the two boys have identical squiggles, which shows Charlie’s empathy, but the addition of Charlie’s squiggles literally bringing light into the darkness is a whole new level of transformation! Charlie has done the work! 😍

Carrie Lindley

Also, I just noticed this bullying is happening right in front of the PSHE bulletin board. You can just see info on Online Safety, Anxiety, and Relationships in the last panel. Alice, that's brilliant. Love this reminder that a curriculum on "personal, social, health, and economic education" can only go so far. It takes real commitment by staff and students to move that content from points made on a bulletin board or in a classroom to actions in the hallways and in real life. That gap between checking a box and changing behaviors can be enormous. It requires a cultural shift... I hope Charlie can help Truham move in the right direction!

RCM

I had to break this down today because...it's all so intentionally and beautifully done! Panel 1---Charlie walks in on the HA HA that is an awful kind of HA HA...especially as its being used to exert power over another (smaller and unsupported) student. It's the type of HA HA that other students often don't know how to stop so they just keep walking by...even though one of the bullies is literally grabbing the younger student by his arm. His discomfort is evident from afar, with his drawn up shoulders and avoiding any eye contact downcast look (and I don't blame him but heart screams for him). Panel 2 and 3---I LOVE the symmetry Alice shows here...by cutting these panels from what could be an entire rectangle containing both the younger student and Charlie's reactions to drawing them in separate but mirrored trapezoids that put together create a whole, Alice really highlights the connection between the currently being bullied student (whose shoes Charlie knows all too well) and our current empowered and very angry Head Boy. The shared squiggly lines of equally strong but very different emotions emanating from both of them also shows the parallel between their stories, and the way the younger student has a darker shadow around him while Charlie has a light glow around him---perfection. The intent and detail found on these two panels is so powerful! Panel 4---Who knew how commanding a simple "Hey." would be? We don't even have to see Charlie's very fiercely set face with a 'this is ending now' look...we can tell by the shock of being caught looks of surprise on the bullies faces that they hear the meaning behind that HEY. And the younger student, oh my word, I am in tears, because his young face, popping up to meet Charlie's eyes with his own look of surprise and touch of hope, is reminiscent of when superheroes show up at just the right time in movies, and right here, right now, Charlie Spring is that HERO for him! Now to go sit and be so proud of Charlie for a bit...

Scott Whittall

There is a new sheriff in town, and he is not messing around. Once a upon a time you told Geoff you did not want to be defined by the fact that you were bullied at 14. Look at you now dear Charlie. Summoning the strength of a champion from your very own history of abuse. Your fellow classmates knew what they were doing when they voted you as Head Boy. Especially this young lad with his freckles and glasses who listened to your head boy speech with such hope.

Lisa Punky Girl

Oohhhhh charlie about to kick some booty! Meaning he's about to stick up for the kid and tell the buddies off!! If so I'm super proud of charlie and him growing into his confidence!!❤️❤️

Ann ✨

Go Charlie!!!!!!!

Vadant18

I hate that Charlie was bullied… but I LOVE that you are showing how people can experience trauma and break the cycle and become PROTECTORS rather than using it as an excuse to perpetuate it and cause others harm. Alice, you’re a gem. ❤️

Maddy

YESSSSS CHARLIEEEEEEEEEEEEE

RO

GO CHARLIE 💃🏼

Ava

YESSSSSS CHARLIE!!!!

Oliver Midson

His Spidey senses are tingling. Also I KNEW THAT BOY WAS GONNA BE IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!

Anna Deligio

I love the punctuation for the "Hey." It's firm, loud enough, and in control. No exclamation points needed. It interinterrupts the behavior and shows that Charlie is in control - of his feelings and the situation. ❤️

Shelly

I don't think I can love this page anymore! XO Charlie ( and Alice)

MissKimiexox

So proud of Charlie! He has come a long way ❤️

GWON CHAR 🗣️

Joni

Charlie. The head boy that you are… 🥹❤️

Katha

The boy with the glasses is back ❤️! I liked him since we first saw him.

Märta Birkner

So excited to have the little boy with glasses back, during Charlie's speech he looked up with such hope and Charlie is sticking to his promises. This is so healing!

Andrew Pitonack

Look at Charlie all confident, hopefully this doesn't trigger anything 🤔🥹

brie

Charlie’s about to use his teacher voice

Raychel Sherman

YES YES YES! Oh my GOD. The emotions…. 🥹😭

Charles Castleberry

Charlie may not have been into rugby, but I bet it gave him more physical confidence. Nothing like bashing into people recreationally to make possible physical confrontation less fear inducing.

Christine Sylvain

Yes Charlie!! Be that person for him that you never had! 💜💜💜

Lolli98

I don't want to start whining about season 4 again...but I'm desperate to see Joe play the confident Charlie!😭

Ri

It makes me sad realizing Charlie never had anyone to help him when he was being bullied at the age of 13.

Anne Marie

Yes, Charlie!! Bullying will no longer be tolerated here. Yes to all of this. Let’s go!!

Jennifer Cooper

That’s right,Charlie show them what you meant when you said, “No more bullying will be tolerated.”

artxsta

i love when pages, like this one, show the culmination of a character’s journey and you realize how far they’ve come. you can’t help but look back at how much charlie has grown since volume 1, the boy from nearly 2 years prior who kept apologizing for taking up space & being in the way, essentially feeling sorry for existing at all. who felt forced to tolerate unacceptable behavior because he said he was used to it. this charlie, now, as mr. farouk had said, is in a position where he can inspire and be there for others who are otherwise defenseless. his strong, commanding presence— his posture, his furious but determined expression, and his strong shoulders, and he has probably grown taller— shows that he not only wants to take up space, but is using it in his favor to intimidate the bullies, hopefully getting them to leave the boy alone. seeing charlie’s arc is emotional, especially getting to read vol 6 so soon after the new season. i’m fragile now lol

Jennifer Paddock

Yes, Charlie!!! The continuity with the boy with glasses from the morning at school after Nick's birthday and the head boy speech is wonderful. Charlie really is being the change! Talk about a knight in shining armor 🙌❤️😊

Gregory Toner

I cannot express how much I love this 💖🥹

Dean Horn

None of that indeed! ❤️

Neenie

The shading is so cool in these

Angie Michaelis

This is such a beautiful full circle moment from Charlie being bullied in volume one and from the boy in glasses watching Nick and Charlie at the beginning of this volume to this moment where Charlie can use his power for good to stop the bullies. 🥹 Go, Charlie, go! I bet our head boy will use this moment to push the headmaster to approve the pride club too. 🫶

RyGy

This is leading to a huge thing...and charlie is going to use it to push for his group.

Cliff

Is one of the tormentors the smug guy with the light hair who ran against Charlie for Head Boy?

Marilou Jaen

it's the 200pt sized "Hey." for me.

Isak

YES CHARLIE!! You’ve come so far, I’m so proud of you

Clemence

Full circle! YES CHARLIE we’re so proud of you!

Kat

Yes Charlie!!! They are so lucky to have you!!

I’m from the southern part of the US. GIT ‘EM, CHARLIE!

Brittney

Go on Charlie! Let's go baby boy! 👏👏 show them who's in charge

evie weymouth

look at charlie’s spidey senses !!!

Kristen

Yes!!!! Yes Charlie! ❤️ you are a freaking rock star!!! 🥰🍂

Samantha White

I notice that the mouth on the bully in panel 2 is the same sinister expression of other times when we have seen bullies. Most recently when Charlie has a flashback to the bullies when he is making his Head Boy speech.

Ariel

GO CHARLIE👏❤️

Murgy

Charlie: Not on my f*&$ing watch!

EC

Omg Alice! The details of the kid trying to hold his emotions in and Charlie radiating it outward… he’s no longer trying to bottle it up. It’s coming out and it’s wonderful to see how you were able to show that through your art! 😍🥹

Larisa

Head boy is in da house. Shit just got real 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Go Charlie!! ❤️

artxsta

the way i loved the shading but didn’t even notice the contrast between the two panels of charlie and the boy. just excellent!!!

artxsta

i’m wondering if they’ll get a name / become someone significant ! i’m already loving the running thread of the kid in the glasses and the introduction of a new character, however minor they may be

Lodge

So I teach 11-14 year olds, and in the US we get our own schools for that age group. The idea is, the younger students are not ready to be in the mix with almost-adults of 16 to 18. But this is an amazing eye opener of possible advantages with UK secondary schools having the whole age range. Charlie has actual authority to protect this younger boy, even without having been elected Head Boy, purely by being so much older. And he said that it was Sixth Form guys, not teachers, that put a stop to his own bullies when he first came out. 🤔

Elspeth Fougere

Yes Charlie!!! 😁✨💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

David C Witkin

Alice Oseman is an expert at using shading to show the contrasts between different characters and different personalities in the same situation. And seeing Charlie coming into his own self-assured feeling of presence and authority to protect a younger kid is very rewarding. GO GET EM, CHARLIE!!

DLDyus-Bonsell

Charlie being who HE needed is the most beautiful thing in the world 😭😭😭😭

Dionne Lakey

We used to have middle schools in the uk and in some places they still exist, but the majority are now just primary and secondary split. I feel that secondary in the uk has much less nurturing and pastoral care than primary and so it is a very abrupt transition for some of the 11 year olds coming in to such a grown up environment. I do wish there was more of an option to go to a middle school for some kids here.

Nils

I hope that Charlie is doing something good here and not misreading the situation. But I doubt it. The drawing seems to imply some sort of distress of the younger student.

chloé

i went to middle school and think it definitely did help. my area changed recently though and has gone back to two tier
