It's so special how you Alice draw the light. The most beautiful was the little glowing Christmas tree lamp in Charlie's bedroom, but here all those stars and little lamps are glowing as well. It's very special and so warming 🙂 And drumsticks sticking out of Charlie's pocket are so cool ❤️

Looks like we have two simmering situations and it will be interesting to see if they deviate from the tv series. Darcy's storyline is a little behind in the comic but things are obviously not going well at home. Elle looks unhappy. She was also looking unhappy way back at Halloween when she was talking to Nick about leaving for uni as she looked at Tao. Perhaps she and Nick will have a chat about their similar circumstances. Always worried about the demon alcohol and how it may loosen tongues. So much is going on with our gang right now and I am here for it!!

I look at a lot of photos on Google! Lots of photos of pubs for this scene 😂 Sometimes I take my own photos to use as references too - I did that for a lot of the Paris backgrounds!

We have such a classic pub holiday vibe here with the hanging lights and Christmas decor creating such a festive atmosphere…the band is getting set up and testing their equipment, and l love how Sahar is adding to the mood by encouraging Charlie to wear that reindeer headband which is sooo adorable! (Bonus I love how Charlie’s standard band attire IS a short sleeve shirt now…his comfort on stage is so healing!) Nick is being his usual caretaker self and getting drinks for everyone, and as an aside, Aled looks suspiciously animated about the arrival of the drinks, but maybe because I’m currently rereading Radio Silence so I’m a little too focused, lol. It does makes me worry that this is the third time we have heard about Darcy being late. She must really be going through it at home, and that breaks my heart…Tara’s disappointed “Ugh” reminds me that Darcy hasn’t really shared about her struggles either (and by saying either, I’m looking at you Nick Nelson). But, all the other myriad of background folks (bless your heart Alice…recreating this scene each upcoming page has got to feel as cumbersome as it initially felt and probably was drawing all that architecture during the uni trip 😅 and we thank you in advance because it really is all so worth it!) bantering and laughing and enjoying themselves sets a tone of excitement and ease🎄🎉 But, Nick still has everything bubbling right under the surface…and it’s been coming out in his sleep, and we all know that alcohol of any amount can bring emotions to the surface too. I think back to a melancholy Nick, sipping or drinks, sitting on Tara’s sofa, watching Charlie at the Halloween party, and thinking about how hot he was/is and about how much he loved him and didn’t want to leave him, and Nick’s buried emotions have been pushing at him more and more recently between David and the essay and memories of little Nick👀 Start playing some happy carols, Queer Intentions! We need you🤩🙌

On the previous page, Alice commented that they thought “green” and “dragon” both had thematic relevance to what will happen in the pub, which had me worrying about Nick and Charlie, but this page makes me wonder if we’ll see that play out more with the other couples as well. Both Tara and Elle look like they have a lot on their minds. Alice, this background is so festive and beautiful. Thank you for taking so much time with the little details. I’m sure it’s tedious, but they really do make the story feel so real. ❤️ I can’t wait to see this scene play out.

Are you older in your second year of 6th form than other countries are in grade 12??? Nick’s birthday is in September, and in Canada since he is in our equivalent of Grade 12, he would be turning 17 and would turn 18 his first semester of uni. This implies that you graduate high school later in the UK??? So he’ll be 19 in university??

In your final year of school in the UK (Year 13, the second year of Sixth Form), students are 17 turning 18. Nick turns 18 at the start of that academic year, on September 4th. I hope that makes sense?

Yes! So in the UK the cutoff date for schools is at the beginning of the school year in September , but in Canada it’s Dec 31st. So everyone born in 2000 for example is in the same school year no matter when they were born. But in the UK if you were born in August vs September 2000 you are in a different school year?

Yes, correct. We have the same school year in Zimbabwe that you have in Canada. Here in the UK it takes a while for me to adjust to the year starting in September and people born in the same year being in seperate school years.

I have a “not from the UK” question! If Nick is the only one over 18 (not sure, but Nick is the only one Tao mentions), are the rest of those drinks sodas? I understand that in the UK, people ages 16-17 can drink (but not buy) beer or wine with food as long as they’re with an adult, but a couple of those drinks look like cocktails (which I think wouldn’t be allowed?). So I wonder if it’s all just actually soda except for the obvious beer glass. This is just pure curiosity on my part. Is Nick buying booze for everyone, or is he the only one drinking? Or have other members of the group (specifically Elle and Tara here) already turned 18?

It's all alcohol - it really depends on the establishment. Many places wouldn't allow someone that young to buy a load of alcohol drinks (because they'd guess they're being bought for under-18s), but other places would let them get away with it. Nick seems to have gotten away with it this time!

Thank you for this reply! Alcohol laws are so strict where I live that this is totally new to me. It’s not like teens don’t find ways to get alcohol here, but it would be so hard for them to drink openly in a pub or restaurant. I think the UK has a much more reasonable way of handling this.

Just watched all three season a little over a month ago for the first time (and second and third ect…😂) and then read all the books and just joined Patreon (first one) a few days ago for all this content. Ah Tao, focusing on how he can use his best mate's boyfriend :P And yes, Alice has drawn themselves into a pickle with the backgrounds, but we all appreciate the effort put into each panel, and I'm sure we'll be combing through them for any cheeky references in the posters. Its fun to see festive Queer intentions and I suspect the antlers might get a little out of place if Charlie gets too into his drumming. I hope Darcy is ok, though given how they were when last we saw them, I fear a certain mother might be meddling again.

I love your drawing in this one alice! I guess social/public backgrounds take a bit of filling in but it really works! I especially love the shimmery/christmas possibly mesh over shirt the pianist/punter is wearing in the first block, i absolutely adore how free that scribbly drawing bit is but it works so absolutely beautifully! I cant believe youve been doing this comic for so long, and still managed to keep such a loose style, that must be so hard to keep, not trying to "perfect" it, but the looseness nd freedom in your sketching is part of what makes it so relatable and approachable and satisfying to look at, it invites us to use our imagination more and gives us permission to fill in the blanks and invent parts of the story for ourselves! And I love having that permission by n author, to make the story up myself a little bit as well! Thank you Alice, you are so so talented as a storyteller, just the right amount of story, challenges, love, and ease shown 🎈 this is why its so delightful for me ❤️

i'm just guessing here, i might be wrong but they do break up in the nick&charlie novella at the end of the school year because of distance (and get back together).. but so does nick&charlie because tao&elle did so maybe it's a build up that tao might feel anxious about elle leaving soon since he'll be staying a year longer at truham while she's off to college🥹

The more I think about it I would prefer a Tao/Elle break up at some point in the story.. They are a cute couple, but I don't feel they would be perfect partners for life. I think it would be a great storyline to include a breakup and show how to handle it in a healthy way (even if it will be hurtful).

It's december after Nick turned 18 in September. So Taras birthday in June will be in 6 months, because it was her 16th birthday in Paris, when Nick was still 16 as well.

It is the only couple in HS where I wouldn't be totally heartbroken if they aren't end game. I really like them, but could go either way. And I agree with normalizing a breakup, as most teen couples aren't Nick and Charlie.
