Oh, this could be a disaster. Its clear that Charlie isn't interested even if the guy didn't know about Nick, but he is going to flirt anyway because its possible he thinks at this age anyone in a relationship for that long will be dying to try something different. But we know that's not Charlie. Frankly the guy is just asking for trouble. In most other stories I would assume that he is going to kiss Charlie against his will just as Nick rounds the corner, but given Charlie's history I hope we're not going down that route. Though perhaps Nick seeing Charlie sock him in the jaw might alleviate some of the worry he has. I hope it doesn't go like that for Nick's sake, and at the moment seeing Charlie talking with him might just be enough to cause the talk that needs to happen soon. Nick needs to see the value of himself soon.

Sometimes it's nice to know people are interested in you. It doesn't change anything about your current status (unless you want it to) but it can change how you feel about yourself. Okay okay....hear me out. He's just saying the band is really good and he wanted to learn drums. From Charlie's POV, this is just a friendly compliment to him and the band. No indication of being hit on by the guy. We know he may have other motives based on what we, the audience, know. Now Charlie is unaware of what this guy said to Nick so he couldn't possibly be upset or think any ulterior motives may be at play here. Again, don't want to speculate on what may happen next but to me, putting myself in Charlie's shoes, this is just a pub patron giving a compliment, that's all. Great point!! Just positive reinforcement of his drum playing abilities. I guess if I was trying to flirt, I would have focused the compliment on just Charlie. Like, "you were good" or "You are great drum player". So because of the wording choice, and knowing that Charlie doesn't know what's been going on inside, my first instinct is to just take it as a compliment and not an attempt at flirting. Charlie's response is ambiguous but his facial expression does indicate that he may want to cut the conversation short. Not because he's picking up the flirting and rejecting it but because he's focused on helping the band and getting back inside to Nick.

Nope. Just look at the body language. Even Charlie can see that he's flirting, and being hella creepy. And every musician has heard about the phenomenon of "groupies", who will do and say anything to sleep with the band. Give Charlie some credit! Plus, Charlie is bound to remember that saying him playing the drums is "so cool" is one of the first things NICK ever said to him, so anyone else who flirts with him using that line is trespassing on sacred ground. Looking at Charlie's body language, it's clear he's totally creeped out AF.

It took me a minute to decide if it was the grrr duo who messed with Nick's head earlier peeking out of the doorway together in this first panel...(but I think the girl here has darker hair and a lighter color top so I am guessing just another random crowd member). It does feel like they have plotted how the guy who is crushing on Charlie (despite knowing he is in a long term relationship) should approach Charlie. (And Nicholas Nelson, that is a big hard to miss doorway so I hope you are NOT getting another drink!!!) . It's interesting how this guy who WE know fancies Charlie but Charlie has no idea (yet) has such bravado to come up, pay a general compliment, then lean in literally to be all casual, and offer a loaded, "I've always wanted to learn how to play... the one instrument that YOU play...blink, blink, blink". Two things stand out to me. One, you can tell Charlie appreciates the compliment for his musical prowess, but that is it. There is zero emotion/vibe/mood emanating from Charlie other than being nice to a fan (as is Charlie's nature). I think it crosses Charlie's mind that this guy's wording/body position could be fishing for a flirty response, but EVERYTHING about how this page is drawn tells us that is not happening. The panels are so structured, with clear lines and demarcations (showing the secure relationship boundaries that Nick and Charlie enjoy), the lighting is consistently the same (reflecting no evidence of fluctuating emotion here, just a random guy trying to be so cool and about to spill his beer), and by the surprised turn of Charlie's head, it's obvious that Charlie only noticed this guy when he spoke to Charlie...otherwise, I think Charlie would have walked right past him to go back inside and look for any remaining band equipment (well, mostly for Nick too because I am sure he is ready for a hug first just as Nick needs a recharge!). There are no bubbles, no leaves, no sparkles, no any kind of emotionally charged doodles, there is no blushing, no anything that implies ANY kind of interest coming from Charlie. He is not even on a page that would consider anything about this guy...not even drum lessons, lol. Second, I think into the very looming future about how many times both boys will have to navigate similar situations over the next few years. Let's face it, they are both amazing, wonderful, kind people who of course would attract unwanted suitors (especially those who think they have nothing to lose so why not try?!)...they haven't really faced this before at their mostly Truham/Higgs parties, and the first time this happens is always "a thing" to learn to navigate as individuals and as a couple. Except now, it feels like a heightened level because Charlie already had a slight panic moment when a girl seemed to flirt with Nick (although he recovered quickly with that cutest Nick Nelson golden retriever exclamation, "That's My Boyfriend!") AND, more of my concern, is our dear Nick Nelson, who has been struggling for months with deep unspoken anxiety of losing Charlie and deep fears of not being good enough, smart enough, capable enough, worthy enough for uni, for his dad, for his Char, and for himself...and tonight, full of beer and shots and emotions and people who have stirred the pot, bringing all those questions into the forefront of Nick's mind...yikes. My heart rate is high with worry...another great page with a story in a story in a story!

Charlie is trying to shake the guy off the same way he tried to shake Ben off. My guess is this guy won't take the hint the second time, and Charlie will have to push him away, just like Ben. If Nick sees any of this, it could lead to a proper full-on Nick Nelson smackdown like in the fight with Harry at the cinema.

An ideal outcome of this scene would parallel Charlie confronting Ben at Harry’s party (but obv, whatever ends up happening will be best for the plot, this is just wishful thinking). He doesn’t need Nick to “save him,” although it’s nice to have the backup sometimes, but in the state Nick’s in it would likely escalate more than it needs to, and I wouldn’t want Nick to be seen as a violent / jealous person, when really he’s just anxious and insecure and agitated. Charlie is perfectly capable of standing up for himself, and it’ll show his growth over the last 6 volumes ! And hopefully later on, N&C can have a laugh about BOTH of them being hit on in the same night

Now, I am not saying the guy isn't flirting. I agree that he is, all I am saying is that Charlie doesn't have the knowledge of the inside conversation to be upset with the guy. Saw some comments about how Charlie should angrily turn him down or get angry with him for flirting. Again, Charlie doesn't know what's been happening inside. To him, he's just some guy saying something nice. I also don't believe that Charlie is completely oblivious to the flirting. His facial expression and his body language indicate he doesn't want to keep the conversation going because, IMO, he's focused on getting back to help the band pack and get back to Nick. By saying what he said and turning away from him towards the van, he's turning the guy down. We know the intent of the guy because as the audience we are aware of what's been happening and what this guy said to Nick. Now, is it right for him to flirt even though he knows Charlie is with Nick? Absolutely not!! But he's still gonna shoot his shot. Lastly, I am genuinely curious. How old does the guy look? Young adult? Teenager still? He looks, IMO, closer to his early 20s. Charlie is too young for him even if there was a small chance in hell.
