I always felt like the friendship bonds are a bit more like Nick and Tara are a bit closer and then Charlie and Darcy seem to have gotten rather close, too, which is why I love Nick‘s declaration of love for Darcy. In Germany there is a saying: Children and drunk people always tell the truth. Nick‘s reaction seems so genuine. Good for him, articulating his feelings. Just holding space for Tara being so happy and supportive of Darcy, as she immediately replies "I was waiting for you to say that." I mean, how much love and affirmation is wrapped up in that sentence, and Tara's smiling, encouraging face reflects only validation and respect. Be still, my heart! AND LOOK AT DARCY (who just went through who knows what kind of hell at home tonight), look at THEM now, BEAMING, literally aglow, as they ask Charlie and (a very tipsy) Nick to use they/them pronouns FROM NOW ON!!! I love it! Charlie doesn't hesitate at all, "Yeah, of course" and his warm smile shows how much he knows this fits them...it's so Darcy, and just so right. All this felt safety, love, affirmation, openness...this is what it means to have chosen family, and I am here for every single bit of it (one of my favorite things about Heartstopper!). I welcome our good friends, the Heartstopper leaves, that are falling again, mostly for Darcy but please also be for this long night to end sooooooon, lol...and then, there is Nicholas Nelson who I am betting will NOT be drinking again anytime soon, poor love. He probably sensed all the excitement in the car arousing him from his drunk stupor on his favorite napping spot of Charlie's shoulder. I love those groggy eyes in panel 3 trying to focus in on what is happening so he can participate too, lol, and, because he is our gentle, loving, people pleasing golden retriever, he goes right into affirmations of love and support, his usual modus operandi, but in the best way possible, and literally lunges himself forward to REALLY emphasize to Darcy how cool THEY are and how much he loves THEM. Such a sweetie, even drunk, for his friends. I love the oscillatory lines around the speech bubble which match his alternating partly passed out, partly alert movements...Nick looks like he had to shut his eyes in that last panel JUST to let his brain catch up to the sensation of his sudden body movement (It probably feels like a G-Force level movement to him). For some reason, I read his "Darcy" as a slurred "dar-thy" and it is so indicative of how this night got away from Nick. He started out just wanting to have a little fun, and let off a little steam, but a combination of pent up stressors and emotions mixed with shots and beer and beer and shots and vodka drinks and...oof, it all caught up to him, and people may be angry, but he LOVES his people, no matter what. I agree with everyone, there is a very good chance he might be sick, and while I don't wish that for Tara's cute little Fiat 500 (she already had to clean up after that killer Halloween party..), it might do Nick's body good to get some of that alcohol out of his system...if not, to get him some food, water, electrolytes, and a bed, ASAP...and I think Charlie feels all of this. Nick has been a wee bit unpredictable tonight (with New Guy and all) and Charlie is literally sweating right now over what Nick might do next...question something, vomit, pass out, cry...the "oh shit" concern is all over Charlie's face. That's fair, Charles...but right now, I'm going to leave this page happy and CHEERING for Darcy. They deserve the world...
