Nick 😭 Charlie loves you, let him help you (with this and whatever is going on in your head)

Kristen

Yikes! Nicholas…darling, you definitely need help, especially Charlie’s. He’s gonna feel bad for saying that, bless him.❤️🍂

Barb

I heard that cry in my mind😭😭😭

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

I hope Charlie can look past his hurt to realise Nick doesn't mean it. It's interesting though because Charlie would have memories of the times he himself lashed out without meaning to, so he should be able to understand it

Robby C

Oh no...this hurt my heart. 😢

Don't you give us those lies Nicholas!

carly

Yesssss so cute can’t wait for tomorrows romantic Valentine’s Day page 😍 /j

Noemiette

When you said that Nick was going to go through it this chapter, you should have specified that we were also going to go through it x_X this felt like a gut punch (Maybe more thoughts later when I'll be off work)

Katya818

From Nick’s perspective, I totally get it. When you've been emotionally neglected by a parent (regardless of how great your other parent may be), its hard to accept help when you're feeling vulnerable for fear of being dismissed or rejected. Char, be patient with him, he has some tough healing to do. Different than yours, but still difficult all the same.

Elena

Looks like the green dragon is still not over 😭 I thought we would be out of that bad stuff happing by now. 🫠😶‍🌫️

Fey 🍂

What the hell is going on here? That’s not Nick. I know he’s feeling sick, but that sounds like he’s angry. He would never talk to Charlie like that. I don’t like where this story is going at all. WTF

aine

oh

Elfi

Nooo, that's exactly what I expected! But I hoped I was wrong! 😭😭😭

Emily

Oof. I have been the drunk friend to take care of everyone else, then refuse help when I needed it. It’s never a good time for anyone 😢

Ariel

🥺😢 ouchhhhh Nick that one HURT

C 🐝

Holding on to all that hurt, his emotions have finally come to a peak 😢... I feel for them both.

Merel

I hope Charlie doesn't see this outburst as Nick pushing him away, but as his insecurities and stubbornness getting the best of him. Will Charlie recognise this as a cry for help, or will he start feeling like Nick doesn't appreciate him or their relationship? It's so hard when the person you love refuses your help and won't let you in emotionally. I can imagine this would cause Charlie to withdraw more as well. We know what's going on with Nick, but Charlie is still in the dark about a lot of it...

Reivaj, proud member of the Logan and Benji cults

It's interesting how it seems like HeartStoppers is changing the roles of the novel "Nick and Charlie", with Nick being the one insecure about moving away from Charlie. I like this, don't get me wrong it's sad, but I like exploring more of Nick's insecurities abiut who he is without Charlie. I also like Charlie being the one there to help Nick this time around. It shows how much both of them love eachother and want the other to be happy. I just hope this moment doesn't lead to a temporary break up between them. I think Charlie will obviously be sad about hearing this, but he will stand his ground here and finally have the long overdue conversation with Nick.

Beth L-A

Awww bloody hell! 😩😭🫣

hllwds

remember how people on social media kept saying that Heartstopper was unrealistic because no one can be that happy in a relationship 24/7….well, i kinda miss the times when N&C were „unrealistically“ in love—and i was happy, too 😅

Katie H

This page hurts so much and feels like a stab in the heart💔😭 Perhaps Nick is pushing Charlie away because it makes it easier than being honest with his feelings. But I have faith that they'll get through it and hopefully Charlie understands that Nick is hurting and didn't mean it ❤️

Claire

Oh -- not a surprise. I just hope Charlie just quietly waits and says that he is there for whenever and whatever he is needed for when Nick is finally ready. I like the bold simplicity of this page layout -- our boys -- seperated with that gulf between them -- of Nick's making right now.

emily

oh jesus christ

Emily

It’s the (for lack of nicer words) savior complex Nick has with his friends and especially with Charlie. It’s hard to ask for help when you’re the one that feels like they need to help or “save” everyone else. (Speaking from experience 🫡)

Katrina

Oh no 😥

Lyndris

Ok, that was one of the less appealing options I had in mind for the next page…oh f***

Lolli98

Ouch. Nick, we know you don't mean it. But rn it just f...ing hurts.😑💔

Zoe S.

Oh god what a gut punch this page is 😩

Neenie

Welp. That could have gone better

Kim

💔

Ben

Aww

Mar

savior complex + absent parent + high insecurity + high stress + high intoxication is what’s going on

Mike Maxwell

Time for Charlie to tell Sarah that Nick is drunk and sick and just head on home. This is not together time. No one in Nick's situation (been there, buddy) is ready for deep meaningful conversation and doesn't need someone watching or holding his hair back. They can talk tomorrow after the sure to be fun rugby match

Merel

I think he's more insecure than angry, to be honest. This whole scene is a metaphor for what we have seen in Volume 6 so far: Nick struggling to talk about his feelings with Charlie, afraid to let his boyfriend see the not-so-perfect parts of himself. It makes sense to me that he's lashing out in a moment of vulnerability.

Jacob Minger

He’s drunk, and having just seen his friends have a huge fight that reminded him of fights that his parents got into when he was a kid, he’s feeling a lot of big emotions and probably doesn’t want Charlie to see him like this. Either that or he’s just being supremely stubborn.

Noemiette

This chapter is making us discover the more messy side of Nick. You might not be used to it, but we knew there was more to him than just being the perfect nice golden retriever boyfriend. Right now, he had a shit night, is very drunk, puking his guts out, isnt mentally well at all, probably feels embrassed and Charlie is pushing a little (not that he is in the wrong at all, just talking from Nick's pov), so yeah he blows up. And he is 100% gonna regret acting like that. But he is a complex human being. And no human being, even the nicest one, can be lovely all the time, and not be hurtful or angry sometimes, even at loved ones

Andruwu

Oh Nick 😥💔

Lolli98

I can actually hear Charlie's heart drop on the floor and shatter into a million pieces. 💔It will need some serious talking and more to fix this. Again I am ENDLESSLY grateful for Alice we know they will have a happy future!💝 Otherwise I would lie on the floor now crying like a baby. 😭 But still my heart is hurting for them today.

Charlie

Well, that is simply not true. And I hope Charlie is well aware of that. But drunk anger is real and it can still hurt. But he’s ashamed, and embarrassed and hurting. 🫂

Justin S.

Nick!! Ugh.... my heart....

Jasollie

I can’t believe Nick yelled at Charlie like that. 😭😭😭

Zoe S.

I didn't read it as anger (its big letters, sure, but not caps, more of a snap than a shout??) but more panic and fear of letting Charlie in (mostly emotionally). I totally get how it feels to find it hard to accept help from people when you've suffered emotional abuse from someone who should have put your needs above theirs. I think Nick is scared to be so vulnerable with Charlie because of how his dad treated him in vulnerable moments in his childhood. All that being said, this page hurt

Nic

Ouch

MissKimiexox

Ooohhh.. not like the Nick we know 😬

Sarah Jacobs

Ok here's the problem that's going to happen. With a sentence like that where the inflection can be on multiple words, both boys will hear it differently. Nick may be saying "I don't NEED your help", or even "I don't need your HELP" as those are contradictory to his self sacrificing ways. Charlie, however, will hear "I don't need YOUR help", and think that Nick thinks he is useless. Ugh I'm so upset 😭

val

woah-😀

Brittney

Nicholas Nelson... why? Just why? Your boyfriend, who's so supportive and loving, wants to help you. Don't push him away... I know you're scared of everything yourself since Charlie has basically helped himself towards everything that came his way. You kept holding his hand, and now it's his time to help you. We know you're scared and lost, but I promise Charlie would never judge you if anything I think it would be the opposite which he would understand a lot more than you would expect him to, like it's safe to say, your life so far has been complicated because the only reason number one support has been your mum but then it was Charlie, and slowly all your amazing friends. Like come on Nick don't be like this please... let Charlie in

JRob

As soon as I opened the page, I was like, "yeah, knew that was coming, no mater how much I didn't want to believe it."

art

there's the anger or rage of the people pleaser

Elity

Oh, Nick.

Dean Horn

I hope Charlie handles this the same way Nick handled him snapping at him. I’m sure he will. Nick’s having a bad brain day, exacerbated by alcohol. Just like Charlie has his bad brain days. Plus Nick does have stuff going on in his head that he needs to process before talking about them. He does need to talk about them. ❤️

Elena

Once upon a time, when Nick and Charlie had a great time, when heartstopper still was a feel-good-graphic novel and everything was fine.... 🫠 and then - without a warning - turned into a trauma revealing storyline. 😭🥲🫠😶‍🌫️🫥

TT

Growing up is so hard, and as much as this hurts to see, I love that Alice is exploring Nick’s insecurities and issues. A neglectful parent leaves DEEP wounds, and he was due to have his mask removed. When you’re the one taking care of everyone else, you do fear the loss of relationships if you let them in to your struggles. If you let them see you at your worst, it may be too much for them. It’s much easier to focus on everyone else…until it’s not. I just hope he doesn’t hurt Charlie too much in the process, and I hope Charlie continues to see through Nick’s crumbling walls. 🥺❤️‍🩹

Sulagna Maitra

Nick's defensive walls 🧱 are solid and shut. Eager to see what approach Charlie takes to get through - will he take a sledgehammer ⚒️ and break them down in one go or will he take a more gentler approach and dismantle them one by one... perhaps with the help of others? 🤔

Melanie

Nick is actually vomiting EVERYTHING up including his feelings 😳

Doménica Dolly

It seems like your wording implies that he's acting this way gratuitously, regardless of the intoxication. This is his story arc in this volume, and if you look closely, it's heavily implied in the earlier pages that Nick's mental health is severely affected by his circumstances, such as going to college, thinking about going long distance with Charlie, leaving his mother home alone, not really knowing what to study, and so on. I don't think he's angry, it's all building up to him lashing out at Charlie out of stress and a self-inflicted pressure to keep up an "everything is fine" facade. I actually think it's interesting we get to see this side of him that hasn't been addressed before. We glossed over it when Charlie went into inpatient care, now it's time for us to see how Nick navigates this, alone and along side people who care about him.

Steph

“You do need help and I won’t leave you alone! You didn’t leave me alone last year when I needed help! Let me help you!” The only response from Charlie I want! I just need these two kids to talk!!! 😩

Cody

No Nick, no!!!

Ania W.

It hurts, but I know Charlie will be there until Nick comes out of that bathroom. Because he will probably hear himself in Nick's words. How often did Charlie reassure Nick that everything was okay? How much patience and love did Nick put into getting Charlie to open up, talk about his problems and get help? I really, really believe in Charlie ❤️

Paola✨

Oh no Nick 🥺💔 I just hope Charlie understands that it is not personal and supports him unconditionally as Nick has done with him. Love and reciprocal care ❤️‍🩹

Beth Yoshida

I definitely see a big fight from them coming soon but I think Charlie's response right now will be simple. Just an 'okay' but sitting outside the bathroom door to make sure Nick is okay.

J

Poor Nick, people have been mean to his relationship with Charlie, he mess up helping with Tao and Elle, he tried to help Charlie with the dude flirting and messed up making him think Charlie is mad, he probably feels like he ruined Darcy's coming out and has just thrown up he understandably (tho not a best interest decision) doesn't want help currently cause he thinks rn everyone hates him. I feel so bad for him. Charlie's face is gut-wrenching, but we know Charlie isn't gonna give up not with Nick and not with out a fight (Verbal, but i hope not) all Charlie can do is his best to convince Nick to open that door maybe just to give him the water, not go into the room to keep Nick's not wanting him in there in mind.

Beam Bugge

Ouch, having been on the other side of the locked door Charlie will definitely have some concerns… TALK TO HIM NICK ITS OKAY TO ACCEPT HELP

CinD

I feel like the rose tinted glasses are starting to come off a little more so far during this volume and in a way I’m a little glad because Nick and Charlie can not exist on a pedestal forever they are “real” people that sometimes mess up and that’s ok as long as they communicate eventually 🤷🏽‍♀️

Koko

Best response is to say: "okay". And just wait it out. You can't force help if the other person doesn't want it. Especially in the vulnerable state nick is currently in.

Jennifer Paddock

Oh this page hurts. Poor Charlie for hearing that from Nick. Poor Nick for being so upset that he said that. HOWEVER - amazing work, Alice! Nick and Charlie need this. They need some bumps in the road. They need to balance out their relationship. It can't always be one person "taking care" of the other - they both need to be able to provide and receive care. We've seen Nick struggling for this whole volume trying to figure out his role if Charlie doesn't need "saving" and it's coming to the breaking point. This is excellent story telling and I know Nick & Charlie will be stronger for it!

flynn tasker

okay nick bit harsh there buddy but we will let you off because your going through a hard time ❤️

Astrid H.

Is there a tear near Nick’s eye? 💔

James

I’m waiting for both Sarah and Tori to materialise after hearing that

Lili

Well damn 😭

Elena

As nice it would be to see Charlie waiting in front of the door for Nick to be ready to go out of the toilet, when Nick calmed down and the vomiting isn't as bad anymore, I don't think that would be a good and real reaction there. Charlie must be really pissed off by now. I think Charlie will go home now. It's enough.

Mara

Uh oh

RuthieW

People pleasers don't really know how to accept help from others. I feel this pain.

Jade

pain

Merel

As much as it hurts watching this unfold one page at a time, I really love the direction this chapter is taking. It's so interesting (and important!) to finally dive into Nick's issues and insecurities that mostly stem from his childhood. His absent and emotionally abusive father who scolded him for showing any emotions. Feeling like he had to be an easy child for his mother following the divorce, which led to him being a massive people pleaser even now—to the point where he feels he can't show any weakness or accept help from the people who care about him. Suppressing his identity just to fit in with his peers and not do anything that might make him stand out. Nick has been wearing a mask for most of his life, but it's slipping now that he is faced with the understandably scary prospect of going away for uni, being apart from his boyfriend, and having to figure out who he truly is on his own. He's trying his hardest to keep up the golden retriever facade, leading to him struggling to open up and lashing out in moments of vulnerability. This storyline once and for all dispels the idea that Nick is this perfect boyfriend who can do no wrong. Nick is human, complete with flaws and messy emotions and occasional hurtful remarks or actions. And that is what's so great about Heartstopper. The characters are complicated and layered and imperfect. In short, they're real and I love them all the more for it.

Jeffrey Ricker

Nick’s gonna remember this in the morning and be so embarrassed.

Katha

We might be out of the green dragon but this night goes on forever😔. I love how we explore this “stage” of their lives/relationship and at the same time I dearly wish for them to be happy and healthy again ❤️

JRob

The amount of "sorry" that's coming in future updates...

JRob

I'm really hopeful Charlie can keep it together enough to recognize the reality rather than focus just on the hurt of Nick's words

Anna Deligio

Kind of hoping Charlie and Sarah get a nice chat out of this whole thing.

JoJo 🫶🏻🔐🎨

Aww poor nick for being so upset that he said that and Poor Charlie for having to hear it think Nick might need Sarah now that or have some sleep and a cup of tea also dog cuddles 🫶🏻

Theaterboi27

Well, there it is.......five little yet devastating words sum it all up. The uber bright erratic spots and blotches with sharp squiggles seriously amplify the violent hurls poor Nick is enduring. But those same spots and blotches gradually wrapped in eerie darkness combined with that hopelessly pathetic expression on sweet Char's face. Not sure my heart can take this. I may have said, yesterday, I could not wait for this page. Be careful what you wish for.....

Neenie

And I wouldn’t marry me either a pathological people pleaser

JRob

Isn't that what fiction is for (at least sometimes)? We can't always surround ourselves with "reality" - we all need to escape a bit to bring ourselves back to level.

Neenie

Honestly, this party's over Everyone here should've gone home But I'm afraid of being sober

Juliana Barhorst

Just like Sarah/ Aunt Diane said, "And on those bad days you can ask him what you can do to help. You can be there for him, standing together even when its hard." I think that Charlie should wait to see what Nick needs. He needs rest. He needs water. He's probably feeling really quite a mess and doesn't want Charlie to see him that way. Even though they love each other no matter what. Also the explosive and broken bubble speaks so loudly here. Nick sweetheart please get yourself something to eat and rest up. Don't take this out on Charlie.

snavehcar

Is David going to get a redemption arc? That’ll depend if I want Charlie to stay with Nick after this or not.

Jess🍂

Big ouch right there ☹️

Melanie Jaeckle

Ugh notice how in Charlie's panel, it got all grey 😔 Now he's going to overthink

JRob

It would be so appropriate for her to give Charlie the same talk she gave Nick

Jasollie

I think the guilt he will feel at the memory of yelling at Charlie is going to add another layer of upset and grief to what he’s already going through. 😭

Jasollie

I think the best thing Charlie could do is either say okay or nothing, and just wait for Nick in his room, make sure he gets tucked in safely and then stay with him quietly, as long as Nick doesn’t object. But it can be hard not to be reactionary when a loved one yells at you, especially when this is basically unprecedented. I wouldn’t fault Charlie at all if he can’t take it and decides to leave or yell back or burst into tears as his first reaction (even though it will continue to be painful to read 😭).

olive !

AGHHHHHHH

lexi

i'm screaming at nick to let charlie in but also this is 100% some shit i'd do

Kelly

Well that’s just rude!

Heather

Narrator: He does, in fact, need Charlie’s help. 😢

camelotcrusade

It makes sense to me, though the yelling is extreme. Sometimes you don't want the people whose opinion matters to you the most to see you at your worst.

Shortpockets

Yeah … He’s full of BS! If we could just think rationally when we’re in pain … physical or emotional. He would remember that things didn’t get better for Charlie until he accepted help. I feel that Nick has had to be the adult in the household for a long time. He hasn’t had time to care for himself. We know his brother has been no help. He’s such a douche!!!

Merel

Nick rooted a lot of his identity in being Charlie's boyfriend and biggest support ever since realising he's bi, and now Charlie doesn't need him as much anymore. He is doing better and seems to be thriving. Perhaps Nick feels like Charlie is outgrowing him and will leave him behind, even though Nick is the one leaving for uni soon. Who is he aside from 'Charlie's perfect boyfriend'? His real personality has been hidden away for so long that it probably feels impossible to uncover it again, but he has to figure out who he is (or wants to be) separate from his boyfriend in order to be truly happy in his life and in their relationship. Add to that the stress about his future, this shitty night and an abundance of alcohol? I get why he feels insecure and embarrassed and is lashing out right now.

Kela87

Yeah, Alice, "ouch" indeed! If I'm being honest I would be pissed if I was Charlie, and I would definitely either go home (after announcing it loudly), or wait in his room and be pissed there 😅 Nick needs a reality check and he will not get that if he doesn't understand that he's being unreasonable.

Jordan

My automatic reaction to this was an audible gasp 🥲

Frances

I can’t….

Jordan

I hope we will see (and think we will) a little parallel to the art room floor when Nick showed so much patience and love in response to Charlie’s outbursts

JRob

He got over his "full-on has crisis" to just "full-on crisis"

Elfi

Love this summary! And I can relate to Nick so much...

artxsta

alice replied to a comment abt this a while ago, but i think this could be where charlie will start to think nick not seeking his help is partly bc of HIM (charlie), even tho it’s about nick and his people-pleasing tendencies that is forcing him to keep up the guise of being perfect, causing him to crack and deal with consequential identity issues. the grey cloud making its way back to charlie makes my heart break, but maybe once nick realizes that his pushing charlie away is HURTING rather than HELPING/PROTECTING, he might find the ability to speak up. but i really do feel for nick here, he feels physically awful and the events from this night really brought up all his fears and insecurities to the surface, causing him to repress it w more and more alcohol. poor boys, growing up sucks :( but i wonder what charlie’s gonna do next.

Jordan

The layers! That a “people pleaser” might only stop people pleasing when they realize it’s not actually pleasing the person they are wanting to please 😭

tofuPudding

Felt that...but I know Charlie knows this like the back of his hand....he understands but still hurts...but his friends, Nick and his mental state....stay strong T_T...we all know he will be there for Nick when he reaches for his hand.

Olav Gehle

I think Nick is just embarrassed by himself and feels sad about himself… but I bet he knows that Charlie will not judge him, he just wants to comfort Nick, like Nick would do for him as well. They still learn about each other.

E

Mmmkay Nick, no one believes that

Shanie_MC

Like a punch to the chest. OUCH, indeed

TT

This is exactly what I think. Charlie knows he’s struggling, but he has NO clue what’s being brought to the surface that would cause Nick to behave in such a way. It completely makes sense that it’s triggering Charlie’s issues and he might think he’s done something/is to blame in some way. Oh, this hurts my heart! I hope Charlie is able to take a step back and breathe and see there is a MUCH bigger picture to explain Nick’s struggles. 🥺💔

EC

Spoken like a person that really needs help and knows it but just goes on pretending he doesn’t. Oh Nick… ❤️

Maddy

The knife was twisted

Maddy

CHARLIE PLEASE DONT GO HOME. STAY WITH HIM.

rickettyuncles

Maybe later… but first might be more like the yelling dinner argument (in the comic they make up in a standing hug at Charlie’s)

Joni

Ouch indeed. Punch in the gut 😭

Loveislove

I am torn. I think Charlie wants to make sure Nick gets safely to bed. But he has a gentle approach with Nick which he cannot accomplish through a locked door. He can wait for Nick quietly to see if the storm passes and Nick comes out of the bathroom and apologizes or he can pass off responsibility to Sarah or David and may choose himself for many a reason and go home to wait out how Nick will respond from this in the coming days. Back to this damn emoji 😬

Meike

That day has been a loooong year…

Lilly Mae

Oof. Nicholas, let’s not project our harbored up feelings onto Charlie now 🥲 (Nick, please talk to someone)

Jordan

Same! In their world it’s December-ish so let’s hope by their Feb 14 things are looking better 🥹

Jasollie

Yeah we could even see a thought bubble showing Charlie remembering times he lost control and snapped and that could really help him. I kinda feel like though, from the size of Alice’s print, that Nick REALLY yelled this loudly and harshly and that it’s actually more extreme than the moments where Charlie snapped at him in volume 4.

Angie Michaelis

Ouch indeed. 🥺 I was so relieved to see them escape the pub, but these pages hurt in a different way. I’m worried about how Charlie will take this, especially with that darkness creeping in around him and his struggles earlier in the day. Nick is now shutting him out literally and figuratively. Also, I don’t remember ever seeing Nick shout at Charlie. (I only remember Charlie shouting at Nick during the fight in This Winter.) 😭 C’mon, Nicholas, let him in and accept some help! He loves you and has your best interest at heart.

Steph

There is no way Sarah didn’t hear that. And I really don’t think that she would stand for Nick yelling at Charlie like that. So she may come out of her room again then maybe her and Charlie can have a chat about Nicks behavior lately. Charlie could go home knowing he’s leaving Nick in good hands with Sarah. Then Nick and Charlie could talk in the morning. My predictions are almost always wrong though so who knows haha 😂

Bina

unpopular opinion but i actually think Charlie should just go home at this point, after getting Sara and asking her to make sure Nick gets to bed. Nick is in such a bad place right now and i don’t think he’s going to shift out of it until he’s at least gotten some sleep. he and Charlie won’t be able to have a healthy conversation about all this until then, so it might be wisest for Charlie to step away for now. if he doesn’t, i’m afraid Nick will just keep saying things he doesn’t mean and hurting Charlie even more 🥲

Jasollie

I keep kind of torturing myself looking back at this page and am struck by the intensity of how Nick is shouting at Charlie here. I feel like when we get these pages with fewer panels and bigger text and drawings, it’s meant to indicate the importance of the moment. And the size of the text and the wavy bubble- i fear Nick REALLY shouted loudly and angrily at Charlie here, in a way I didn’t see coming. I’m surprised bc in these difficult times for Nick, he has seemed very in love with Charlie as always and it’s seemed clear that his anxiety and difficulty is not with Charlie himself… so I’m surprised he lost his cool to this level with Charlie, because I feel like it’s not like Charlie has been pestering him or anything, I guess in that moment he just snapped because wow, he really didn’t want to keep telling Charlie he didn’t want him in the bathroom with him. I know the door is certainly a metaphor for how Nick is shutting Charlie out of his emotional life right now, but I just didn’t expect the anger. That being said, I don’t mind seeing it, anger happens, and I’m just so so curious to see how the story unfolds from here, and how Charlie will respond.

Jasollie

I fear that is a possibility but I do think at the very least he would responsibly tell Sarah so someone would ensure Nick is able to get into bed safely. But I can’t see Charlie just like literally leaving the house right now, without a word or goodbye or anything.

Brenda L

That is a beautiful side profile of Charlie. You can interpret the shock, hurt and concern he is feeling without question.

ucfnurse

Except in a few minutes….☺️😊🫶🏻💞💐🍃🌷🍶🥯🌦️✌️🕊️☮️

Cole Morin

Nooooooo 🥺🥺🥺

Maddy

Okay, but like, can we take a second to appreciate how gorgeous Charlie looks

Jasollie

I am curious if Sarah might come out again too. While of course no one likes that Nick shouted at Charlie, I don’t think it’s Sarah’s place to intervene in their conflict- but I could see her stepping in to help Nick if she’s now realizing Nick is struggling beyond just drunken vomiting and Charlie unfortunately may not be what Nick is saying he wants right now. 😩 Unless Nick is at the level of alcohol poisoning he should be able to get himself out of the bathroom by himself at some point and make it to his bed. Water and tylenol on his nightstand, a bucket by his bed- Sarah could step in with all those things if needed, depending on what happens next- will Charlie stay? Will Nick not even want Charlie in his room? (I can’t even imagine Nick not wanting Charlie in his room with him, I’m not going to entertain that possibility any further!)

Angie Michaelis

I agree, Noemiette. I think this is an interesting parallel to This Winter when Charlie blew up at Nick, something he also wouldn’t have done if he wasn’t in such a bad mental place.

Cliff

Charlie’s been in therapy for a year, so on an intellectual basis, at least, he knows that there’s something behind Nick’s actions, so I don’t think he’ll storm off in a huff. He is likely to think that he’s helpless in this situation, which is the way Nick felt when Charlie was at his lowest point. But since he’s not a therapist himself, he’s unlikely to recognize the depth of Nick’s self-hatred, which is like a chasm at this point. That’s right, Nick, drive Charlie away so that he won’t see you as you see yourself at this moment. He was right when he said that he was more fragile than Charlie, and he’s reached his limit. But there’s very little Charlie can do for Nick at this point. So he should back off for tonight, but make it clear the next time they meet that he won’t do what Nick fears most (being rejected by him/losing him), but enough is enough, already! He can’t “fix” Nick any more than Nick could fix him, so he needs to get some help ASAP.

Mareike

I am curious what Charlie's reaction will be. I know that if I had been in this situation at 17, I'd be really pissed and leave until Nick sobered up. Mind you, I'm in my 30s and I would be pissed, too 😄

Shanie_MC

I agree with you. Nick isn't in the head space to talk with Charlie in a rational way, so some space might be good. I'm not sure Charlie would give up that quickly though.

Shanie_MC

I think Charlie is more likely to internalize it and leave, thinking he's done something wrong.

Angie Michaelis

I hadn’t noticed that, but it looks like it could be. 😢 He’s squeezing his eyes so tightly shut, trying to keep everything out.

Lolli98

I thought so, too, but I didn't dare to mention it today. I've been looking at his curls for 2 minutes or so. I think Alice drew them especially nice today. 😊

Calfic

I have so many thoughts. First off, I think some people here are being harsh about Nick. Clearly, there is some growth that needs to happen, and I can see in the moment, why Charlie would be REALLY upset. But also you shouldn't dump someone who has had a really awful night, but has been wonderful, without trying to work it out first. I feel like this attitude that "Nick was perfect and now that he isn't, maybe they shouldn't be together" that some fans have is less than helpful. In terms of Charlie, who is just a 16-year-old kid, after all, I wouldn't blame him for leaving, but I also suspect he won't . As someone said yesterday, with this sort of thing, just for safety's sake, it is good to have someone, even if it is outside the door. If I were Charlie, I would say ok, but please unlock the door in case something happens. And I would kind of compartmentalize the emotional stuff for Just tonight really and focus on the current situation. (I remember a few years ago, after I let it all out, after a night out, my mad, but concerned dad, just staying by me, in case I woke up, and needed to let more out, so I wouldn't choke or something.) Years ago, someone broke up with me, and basically said that I started to have feelings, and he liked me more easygoing, which what the actual.. Of course, if they can't resolve this, that would be different, but I think a little grace and very honest discussions are needed (And therapy for Nick!) Second, I fear Charlie may take it personally, or that think it is in relation to his own mental illness, when I don't think that is really what this is about. I think a check in with Geoff stat is needed. Third, I really relate to this.. For different reasons, I have had similar responses to help. (BIG difference being I'm severely disabled, so in a situation like this, couldn't really say no, I would just be saying sorry a lot, especially when I was young.) How it manifests for me, now. is that if I can do something, but it takes a lot longer, because of my disability, than some nondisabled person in the next room, I will just do it, lol. (Like putting my phone on the charger.). The thing is, I've gotten compliments on it, but I don't think it's wholly healthy.

Robert

I agree about Charlie staying there. In my early life I heard too many cases of drunken people dying because they choked on their own vomit. One time my son went on a bender and was really bad so I 'slept' on the floor by his bed just to keep an eye/ear on him.

Calfic

Yep, Same with my dad. The next day we had a LONG talk, (and I'm at a slightly higher risk of choking due to my disability.) . In the moment though, he just stayed on the floor. And Nick drank SO much.

Evergreen

I would be so hurt if I were Charlie here. It really sucks when a person who has helped you in the past refuses your help. It implies (intentionally or not) that they understand why YOU couldn't handle your own stuff but that they believe that THEY can handle their own. That's never a good message to send in a reciprocal relationship.

hayley

welcome to the other side of the door charlie (where nick was the year prior). honestly charlie might overthink things (but he's in a better place then where he was a year ago and with a therapist) so there's a chance charlie will mention how nick made him feel fragile etc in that moment. when he decides its time for the emotional talk when nicks sober 'cause honestly nick's at his limit right now. also i don't see him leaving. idk i really just don't considering charlie definitely had snapping moments like this we didn't get to see much of in the comic (but we did see more of it in the show with charlie)

Nikki

This is a really great summary of Nick right now 🫶 I feel like you also accidentally psychoanalysed me too 🤭😂

S S

I'm so so sad for both of them :( growing pains are a pain

David C Witkin

I see Nick's pain so clearly. He's drunk so he's not able to clearly articulate his thoughts, but he knows he doesn't want to scare Charlie, so he can't let Charlie see him at his worst, when he's ill or gross or very sad or very scared. Nick is so afraid that Charlie will be put off by Nick Nelson needing help that he tries to push him away right at the moment when he needs Charlie most. Hopefully Charlie will see through this emotional facade and stick it out.

Merel

Haha it honestly feels like self-therapy every time I analyse a character like this 😂

David C Witkin

I've been nursed through a bender or two, and have nursed more than my share of close friends and relatives through them, and stayed by them for safety purposes, regardless of what they yelled at me, precisely because they could have hit their head or choked if left alone. I don't think Charlie will just up and leave. Nick is scaring Charlie, not offending him.

Elfi

The layout of this page is so good. The huge difference between Nick's and Charlie's panels (for example regarding the grey scales - Nick's is so bright and Charlie's rather dark - and also Nick's closed eyes compared to Charlie's really wide eyes) seems to show the different places they are in - literally and figuratively. And that huge, screaming speech bubble between both panels, both boys just separates them even more...

Angie Michaelis

I agree he’s not in the headspace to talk right now, but I also kind of want Charlie to quietly stay, so Nick understands he’s not leaving him that easily, like his dad did.

Glenn

Charlie shouldn't nor should he have to handle this alone. Sarah and possibly even David should be there to work with and support both Nick and Charlie.

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

Because I think this is going to end badly, that they are going to fight, or that Charlie is going to leave home, or that this situation is going to affect him so much that he is going to end up with his problems again 😭🥺💔

Zoe

I know that Nick thinks he is just saying he doesn’t need Charlie’s help right at that moment because he feels vulnerable and out of control. But that’s not what Charlie will hear due to his insecurities and his bad thoughts he will hear I Don’t need YOU’ 😭💔

Calfic

I worry about that too, but also Nick is having his own issues oviously, and at the moment, I'm a bit more worried about that. Charlie has Geoff, he has his friends, he even has his parents when they aren't annoying him and he realizes this, in part thanks to Nick.. But the one who is actually in an emotional emergency right now is Nick. Charlie may have to learn tools to deal with that, without spiraling himself, but that is love. Nick has his friends, and Sarah as well as Charlie, but he isn't seeing that right now, and is trying to just deal with everything on his own. (And being a little hypocritical at the moment, but such is being human.)

Loveislove

I'm thinking he should go home too. This may give Nick the push to see that things are getting out of control and help is needed.

Noemiette

Back hours later with more thoughts XD I feel like since the beginning of this chapter, we've had multiple instances of Nick not wanting to be vulnerable in front of someone and so he keeps pushing it away, putting a happy mask on, making jokes about it etc And the only two times he had his guard totally down was 1. When he had a nightmare, so he wasnt conscious enough to hide it 2. At the party after his jealousy outburst, when he was hammerd (so again, no filters on). But now, Charlie has his feet metaphorically through the door, and Nick is less drunk and is trying to put the mask back on and try to brush it off but it's too late, it's not working. So in my head, he's kinda acting like a hurt animal right now. Someone is trying to help but he feels trapped and panics, and instead of letting Charlie help, he justs lashes out like an animal would bite or scratch or growl. As for Charlie, I just clocked a repetition of moments for him where he feels powerless. Not just with Nick, but also, when the head teacher refused his project of a queer club, or when he felt like he had not been able to really help the kid that was getting picked on. And what's happening with Nick is just the cherry on top and is gonna hurt him a lot. I see lots of people hoping Charlie will be the bigger person, and just not be affected by it because that not really Nick speaking and stay anyway. But again, he's a human being with feelings. He is allowed to be hurt (just like he was allowed to be mad at Nick's possessive outburst with that flirty dude) and if he leaves, I wouldnt blame him one bit. Obviously, I dont know what will happen, we will see. But these are human beings. Teens on top of that. They can be messy, and have feelings, and say stuff that hurt the other. It doesnt make them bad people just because it shakes how people used to view them, as this perfect couple between two perfect people who are great at communicating. Gosh I'm loving this chapter so freaking much ! (sorry if there's any typo, dont have time to read this back right now X_x)

Loveislove

I'm not convinced it is anger. I think Nick is being driven by panic, anxiety and some self disgust and growing self hatred. He told Charlie earlier that everyone hates him. We know his dad leaves when he is "weak." I think he is desperate for Charlie not to see him like this and hate him or leave him.

Jasollie

Yeah if I were Sarah I would absolutely just be checking in once I heard that- to find out what is actually going on and if anyone needs help (while also not getting involved in the conflict itself). But just making sure Nick is physically going to be ok and if anyone needs some emotional support. (Probably tbh wouldn’t be thrilled to need to be parenting at this late hour, but I guess that’s how it goes on occasion when you have teenagers and I imagine generally Nick is pretty low maintenance at all hours).

Jasollie

Who else is waiting for RCM to chime in? 🩷

Anais117

Nick may need some time alone. Charlie may need to give him space and come back tomorrow. Nick knows he loves him. Charlie knows as well. Nick needs to sit with himself and realize what he needs.

Brynn Rabinowitz

Yes, but that could cause a self harm episode...the way Nick is acting, I mean. I am a little worried about that. Charlie looks like Nick slapped him.

Teri Lyn

Charlie don’t take it personal he’s drunk 💔

Anais117

I dunno. I think Charlie is in a good place. He has his other resources. Nick is the one who hasn’t admitted to his needs.

Larisa

Nick. 😑

Chantel D

I hope Charlie leaves

Jasollie

I have been wondering about this, someone has mentioned maybe bc it wasn’t in caps it wasn’t yelling which is how I initially perceived it? I think maybe it could be only a moderately raised voice but in a really sharp tone? It’s hard to say. It sure would be interesting to see how Kit will be directed to play it (and of course his performance will be amazing!) I’m sure that whatever frustration or anger Nick feels toward Charlie in the moment it’s absolutely a secondary emotion to those root causes like you mention. I think we have done so much noticing and speculating of what’s going on with Nick in volume 6 and I think the flashbacks especially have helped us as readers have a clear picture of where his anxiety is coming from but it will be interesting to know when Nick is finally able to name what he is anxious about/ what’s been bothering him. (Not that it’s only one thing!) I think right now the greatest anxiety is a deep fear of eventually losing Charlie as his boyfriend- either that somehow they won’t be strong enough to do long distance and it’s a mistake to go to Leeds, or that Charlie will outgrow him and decide he doesn’t want Nick anymore. I think it’s clear that there is nothing that Nick wants more in life- he knows he wants to be with Charlie forever, but his way of coping with his anxiety- by shutting himself off from everyone, including Charlie, is ironically hurting the relationship.

.

people acting like nick told him to fuck off omg 😭 yeah it wasn’t nice but he’s drunk and actively throwing up cut him some slack.. charlie said similar things to nick during his recovery

Lauri

“It was at this moment he knew… he fucked up” 😟

isa💌

Nooooo nick Nelson abandonment issues plsssss he just wants to help you

Calfic

Word, have we forgotten that time at dinner? (And Nick did leave and later regretted that.). I don't think it's healthy what Nick is doing, but I feel like the response to this page is exactly why we need this exploration of Nick's issues.

syd

noooo

Eileen

Chill my lovely people, it's all gonna be ok. :)

Elsie 3

So many layers and metaphors on this page. I think my brain is deflecting it all bc I can’t stop thinking about the rugby match in the morning.

Josh

Frankly, I like this. It shows that not all couples are perfect and there will be quarrels from time to time. I think for so long we’ve been under a trance of the perfect couple in Nick and Charlie’s relationship. I think this is a healthy bit to show the audience that being in a relationship is never perfect and there will always be challenges. The important part, I think, will be how they navigate through these challenges. Nick is obviously going through a tough time and now it’s Charlie who has to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. They’ll be alright, with a bit of good communication and the love that we know they have for each other, they’ll be ok.

Evergreen

I realized I only posted half of my thoughts about this page! I said I would be hurt if I were Charlie, but I forgot to add that I’ve known the fear of being vulnerable in front of a loved one. My comment about it not being good for a reciprocal relationship was from my own experience of being on Nick’s side of this (metaphorical) situation. I’m so aware of and heartbroken over Charlie’s hurt feelings in this moment, AND I’m aware of and heartbroken about the risk Nick has of pushing away the people who love him. I think Charlie being hurt would be very fair (cause sure, most people don’t like to puke in front of others, but it’s also very clear that this is a metaphor for their whole relationship at the moment), AND it might be the catalyst they both need to explore this dynamic in their relationship. I’m so glad we are able to trust that they will learn and grow from this painful moment.

Jasollie

Amen to your last sentence! Could you imagine if we didn’t know Nick and Charlie were going to be together forever and we were just waiting to find out if they would break up in the end or not? I don’t think I could stand it! In truth, this kind of conflict could be the end for many young couples. But it’s a good thing we know Nick and Charlie are absolutely going to work this out, painful as it is in the moment. ❤️ And I still feel shocked hearing Nick yell (or speak very sharply) to Charlie and j think that’s ok, we have never seen it so it’s tough to see Nick like this! But it’s also very normal and absolutely something they can work through, and this will be the first time of many times that they have to deal with something like this. I actually don’t think this will result in a “fight” but I do think it’s going to lead to some kind of reckoning with a lot of tears.

RCM

God...this one hurts and hurts and hurts, and on so many levels. For starters, damn, Alice! These illustrations are spot on for where Nick and Charlie's mental health are right now. We have Nick, puking out ALL the bad, wanting to keep Charlie "protected" (remember his "it's not nice" in here (aka I'm not good enough to be around you right now so I'm going to say I'm fine and I don't need you until it's better?!), but WE see the back of him, bent over the toilet, profusely sweating from being sick...all the dark dots floating around him are like the literal and emotional vomit coming out of him...he cannot control them, he cannot push them down, he cannot ignore them no matter how much he squeezes his eyes closed and tries. Nick Nelson HAS to deal with this "not nice" purge he brought on himself, and as far as he thinks (from years of practice), he has to deal with it ALONE, no matter how much it hurts, no matter how badly he feels (I see that sad tear, Nicholas!), no matter how much it may hurt Charlie to keep him at bay (but I'm sure Nick is thinking this is just temporary...Charlie will understand, once I can get this under control again and then I will be fine and then I can talk to Charlie and we will be fine again...right?) The "I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP" in its big font and erratic border shape screams for help louder than anything Nick has done thus far...in that flashback with his dad, he had to SILENCE himself, calm himself, will himself to stop sniveling and bury his emotion or his dad would leave. Shut it down, Nick, control yourself, Nick...but here, because Charlie is truly his safe person, Nick SCREAMS at him, he lets his fears and anxieties really show LOUDLY for once (clearly not in the best way, but from our view of seeing all the things to which Charlie is not yet privy, it kind of makes sense...anger is often the emotion displayed when trying to mask more vulnerable feelings). AND, what a gut punch to Charlie...his look of silence, of absorption, as he hears that "angry" scream from Nick...it feels like the whole world just stopped. Time and Charlie have frozen, yet his warm light and glow are slowly assailed by the hurt and pain surrounding Nick that are now misdirected towards Charlie (it feels like those cartoons where a character is frozen but you can still see the air moving around them). You can literally see the darkness creeping towards Charlie, breaking up into little bits of dark as it gets closer to the orb "shield" surrounding him. That hurt hits deep, and Charlie has got to feel it to his core...and my heart HURTS for both our boys. BUT, (always a but), I'm also a little glad.. When Nick was first noticing that Charlie was struggling with his mental health, Nick had visible clues...Charlie not eating much, Charlie skipping lunch, Charlie unable to stay awake from being weak. Nick had time to research eating disorders and make a plan on how to talk to Charlie because it was obvious (when someone cared enough to pay close attention like Nick did) that Charlie was at least struggling with eating issues...Nick, however, is a "silent" struggler. He masks well, and his people pleasing skills make it a little too easy to overlook the depth of the real mental health battles he has been having...there is not a real "visual" to go research...but Nick ALSO has someone who pays a lot of attention, and this someone has been trying to figure out what IS going on with Nick...this night is PROOF that whatever it is, IT'S BAD and Nick does, in fact, NEED HELP...I just don't know if that hurtful scream is going to sting so hard that it blinds Charlie for a bit or if it's going to empower him...going to be a nail biter till the next page for sure!

hayley

also did everyone forget like the two other comments alice liked, which were about how charlie was gonna tear down/melt the walls around nick....

Murgy

Nick, its not weakness to need help, even if its only for dealing with the effects of too much alcohol. But its also fine to let Charlie in. He's not going to run away because things are hard or because he's moved on. Granted, that's easy for me to say, I have future knowledge and you're a drunk, scared teen whose had his doubts and fears poked and prodded by a couple of people in the pub. But its true, Charlie wants to help, and while you may not feel like you deserve it or need it, its still there and frankly you need to take it, even if only for a short bit. You've been on the other side of this after all, you know how much it hurts watching someone struggle. Not that your problems matter less than the feelings of those closest to you. Perhaps its why you don't share it with Charlie, because you feel like you can keep it hidden and spare him the pain? If that is the case, I'm sorry to say it hasn't worked. You need to process what you're feeling Nick, its not easy but its better than letting it hang over you like it is. And Charlie, I know you want nothing more than to help Nick, especially in this moment, but you might not be able to. Love alone cannot cure a mental illness, or repair someone's mental health, no matter how much we want it to. Be there for him, as you are, and I hope the darkness that's surrounding you both lifts soon.

Nikki

I know what you mean haha. I sit here thinking about their actions realising maybeeee I ought to take some of my own advice 😆

Realiti

oh no😢🥺🥺

Brandon Ford

Nick must always be the helper, he can’t be the helpee.

K Lyn

OKAY, ow.

Briars-Lilies

Oooh, Nick is having a hard time sharing his feelings.
